1 Item 32 Senate Times Higher Education World University Rankings Summary City is ranked 366th internationally, an increase of 55 places on the rank of 421st with an improvement in the overall score from 33.9 to City s score in Citations continues to increase, after rising to 43.5 last year (partly due to a change in methodology) it has climbed again this year to 56.2 a further increase of 45 places. remains strong, ranked 47th in the world. 2 Times Higher Education World University Rankings City is ranked 366th internationally, an increase of 55 places on the rank of 421st with an improvement in the overall score from 33.9 to This is the first time City has been in the top 400 since , but that was before the THE World Rankings saw large numbers of new entrants from Asia and other regions of the world. The Research score has improved by 4.7, increasing its ranking 74 places from 422 nd to 348 th. The THE World Rankings is including books and book chapters within the determination of research excellence for the first time, giving more of an advantage to arts and humanities. It is now using the Elsevier Scopus database (rather than Thomson Reuters) for the second year. The most significant gains have been made in papers to academic staff, citation impact and teaching reputation. 5 Teaching Research Citations High Low Average City Score City v Comparator Average Figure 7 shows the variance between City s score and the average score for the comparator group. The University is higher than the group average in terms of international outlook and is comparable to Sussex, York, Exeter, LSE (and surpasses East Anglia) in terms of industry income. The most significant negative variances relate to Citations, Research and Teaching. Citations remains the biggest gap despite the significant gains City has made this year. In the difference between City and the Comparator average in citations was 35.7 points. Figure 8: City v Institutions Ranked Teaching Research Citations High Low Average City Score City v Average Figure 8 shows the average scores for all the institutions ranked 201st -300th. For City to have achieved a position in the top 300, its overall score would have needed to be City would have achieved this with a Teaching score of 30, a Research score of 30 and a Citations score of 60. To achieve a position at around 250th, City would need an overall score of 46.2 which could be gained (for example) with a Teaching score of 32, a Research score of 32 and a Citations score of 65. Within London institutions, City ranks 12 th which is also one place than lower than in : Goldsmiths is the London institution that has overtaken City this year.
