What steps have you taken to ensure this is the right choice for you at present?

4 Medical Career Pathway Intern year 12 months (including at least 3 months medicine, 3 months surgery, 2-3 other specialities) Central application and matching system HSE (centile rank) Basic Specialist Training (BST), Registrar Training 10 programmes, usually 2 years (SHO), pass exams/competitive interview Higher Specialist Training (BST) 4-6 years or longer working as a Specialist Registrar

5 Consultant Many doctors spend some time working abroad and building up their portfolio of research, audits and publications before becoming a consultant. See website of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland ( General Practice, 4 years: Application by competitive process through ICGP ( 2 years in approved SHO post (hospital) e.g. medicine, paeds, obs and gynae, ENT, A and E, psych 2 years as registrar in GP setting with GP trainer

6 Your choices around entry into medicine within Ireland and UK/EU/Further a field 1. Undergraduate with your leaving results and the HPAT 2. Mature student application is via the CAO and the individual HEI 3. Graduate entry to medicine, GAMSAT with a degree generally at 2:1 but this depends again on the HEI (Some HEI in UK take 2:2 degree marks )

7 Undergraduate Entry into medicine in Ireland Leaving Cert + HPAT Results Apply through CAO by 20 th January (late closing date 1 st February) Leaving certificate > 480 points plus HPAT score 2014 points 733 * 2013 points 748*, 2012 points ( *), 2011 points ( *) 480 points + individual subject requirements in the same sitting of the LC >550 adjusted to a maximum score of 565 e.g. LC 590 = 558 adjusted score Fees implication for those who have already taken a degree EU/Non-EU depending on the criteria you fulfill e.g. EU fee 8,456, Non-EU fee 31,085 (TCD )

8 Undergraduate Entrance Examination The HPAT (Health Profession Aptitude Test) The HPAT-Ireland test is a 2½ hour paper-based test consisting of three modules or sections: I. Logical Reasoning and Problem Solving (65 mins), II. III. Interpersonal Understanding (45 mins) Non-Verbal Reasoning (40 mins) Multiple choice, with one correct response; No negative marking

10 Mature Entry Mature Student: person aged 23 on 1 st January of year of entry CAO + directly to admissions office (supplementary form) apply by 1 st February Trinity - Grade B and a Grade C in two of Biology and Chemistry or Physics at higher Leaving Certificate level or equivalent. All applicants must sit the HPAT-Ireland test which will assist with short-listing candidates for interview. Reserves 7 places UCC - A HC3 Chemistry and either Physics or Biology in the Leaving Certificate or equivalent is required, as well as the HPAT Exam. There are four places available on this course for mature applicants.

11 Mature entry Cont/d Irish HEI s CONTD NUIG - 2 mature places to medicine for the academic year 13/14. The entry criteria is honours science from leaving cert, HPAT test and then short listing for mini interviews (MMI) UCD - Please note that students who qualify to apply for Graduate entry to Medicine will not be eligible to apply through the mature entry route. Subject requirements, HPAT, work experience, personal statement and interview. RCSI - The HPAT minimum score for mature applicants varies from year to year. Candidates above this score are invited to submit their CV, a personal statement and references supporting their application. Structured interview which takes place in May, comprised of two panels; one Academic and the other Clinical.

13 GAMSAT Offered in Ireland once a year but you can sit it in other locations and use this for your application too Test centres are in Dublin, Cork and Limerick Plan where you want to take the test very carefully Valid for 2 years take the test 2014 valid for 2014 and 2015

15 Scoring SCORE = (1 x Section I + 1 x Section II + 2 x Section III) 4 Ireland: 21 st March 2015 (registration opens early Nov 2014, closes 1 1th Feb) Ireland: 310 (+ 70 late registration fee by 11 th Feb) Results usually late-may 2015 Special testing conditions: health statement plus letter from registered health practitioner, Dyslexia statement plus report from Educational Psychologist by 11 February Preparation materials e-books (some older versions still current) Test results valid for two years, can use results for Ireland, UK and Australia

16 COST OF Medicine Each HEI will have some relationship with a lender and feel obliged to recommend these but students have found other lenders more favourable For example UL /ULSTER BANK RCSI/AIB BANK /BANK OF IRELAND UCC/BANK OF IRELAND UL Scholarship fees plus a modest contribution towards living expenses It costs approx 25K to put a student through medical school, there is funding for approx 12-13K of this by the state but again this depends on the specific HEI so check this out.

17 UK Requirements Graduate and undergrad UCAS apply as an individual deadline 15 th October 2014 Personal statement and one reference (contact details only + UCAS follow-up) 4 choices: Location, 5 year v 4 year, Learning style? Which suits you best? Entrance requirements grade, discipline, A-level/LC grades, Selection method? Entrance tests UKCAT, GAMSAT, BMAT? Interview / Assessment Centre

18 Funding/Cost UK graduate entry to UG 5 year course First 4 years may be eligible for a full income based maintenance loan from Student Finance England, Year 5 may be eligible for NHS bursary for fees 2013/14; GEM entry - student pays 3,465 year 1, loan from Student Finance England for remainder ( 5,535). Years 2-4 NHS bursary for 3,465 and loan to cover remainder. Again you will need to check this out with the relevant training body.

(stress questions) Don t be afraid to express an opinion articulately, but must be able to take on alternative viewpoints!

II.2 - UCAS + GAMSAT (Cut off ) - For entry for applicants with a 2:1 honours degree or above - 64 for applicants with a 2:2 honours in any subject discipline - Candidates must achieve a minimum score of 55 in Section 2 (written); 55 in either Section 1 (arts) or 3 (Science) and at least 50 in the remaining section, in order to gain an interview.

37 A higher GAMSAT cut off will be used where the applicant has a lower 2nd class degree.
