Mentor s Data Management System (DMS) provides powerful component, library, and reuse management capabilities within the Expedition Enterprise design flow to help manage this critical IP. Combining all of this data with a component research engine built specifically for electronic engineers provides unique value to the design community. The scalability of DMS allows simple quick-start solutions for best-practice library and component information, and can be readily expanded to complex enterprise systems with business and supply-chain management systems integration. 2 2 DMS Functional Overview DMS captures and manages all library and related component data for engineers to draw from while completing their designs within the Expedition Flow. DMS brings in critical component data such as cost and lead time from across disparate systems in the enterprise, making it available to engineers to accurately select the best parts during the most critical design phase. The primary functional capabilities within DMS The unique value in DMS is an integrated ECAD library and component management environment that is tightly connected with the design flow. DMS delivers the following capabilities to the engineering community with minimal deployment effort and little-to-no need for customization: ECAD Library and Reuse Management and Distribution ECAD Component Management Design Flow Process Integration Enterprise ECAD Integration Management and Administration

3 3 ECAD Library Management DMS enables librarians to have full control over the management and distribution of the ECAD library, providing the following core functionality: Library management functions that enable sharing libraries across multiple sites and configuration of corporate-specific rules Part creation capabilities that aid in developing the necessary ECAD views Part validation functionality, which helps ensure the integrity of the part, its data, and the respective part views Library Management DMS provides a full suite of library management capabilities, supporting solutions for single as well as multi-site library environments. DMS comes with an initial configuration for a quick start-up, but can easily be extended to support customer-specific requirements. The DMS library management functions include: Centralize d, web base d par t re ques t management, with an integrated process workflow, enabling coordination of part requests globally Distribution capabilities for additional remote/shared DMS locations Reuse block administration to aid in further leveraging corporate IP Part Creation DMS provides a complete part creation flow for librarians with integrated editors to support each of the desired ECAD views. The part creation flow is tightly integrated with an on-line part request process to promote quick librarian response and a tracking mechanism for library work in progress. The integrated Part Request Module within DMS provides a consistent tracking mechanism for librarians as well as engineers during its part development process. The DMS part creation flow provides: Management of logical symbols, footprints, component data, and attachments such as internal specs or manufacturer data sheets Object level version control Support of alternate symbols, footprints, and manufacturing technologies Detailed graphical previews to aid in part research and approvals Part Validation A critical function associated with library management is part validation. DMS provides several levels of checks for librarians while entering and managing library parts, ensuring that users have confidence in the integrity of their released ECAD library. These checks are tightly associated with Expedition Enterprise tool flow requirements and are built based on our intimate knowledge of the tools and inherent data dependencies.

4 4 ECAD Component Management Incorporating company-specific component data including suppliers, manufacturer part number, cost, compliance, etc. is the key to enabling the powerful search features within DMS. All component data needs to be entered only once in DMS, making it available across the entire design flow. Three primary component management functions incorporated into DMS include: Advanced part research including graphical and data viewing and comparison General component management including establishing preferred parts lists, configuring filtered part selection for designers, and obsolescence management Integrated compliance and lifecycle management Advanced Part Research Once in DMS, the component data is made available for advanced library research and data-mining. Users can leverage where-used searches to analyze the impact of a part going obsolete, or search for like parts before requesting or approving a new one. Users can also set up search presets and shopping lists for easy access to common searches, such as finding all RoHS compliant components with a lead time of less than 6 weeks. These filters and advanced searching capabilities are part of the powerful decision-support tools provided by DMS and can be a key enabler in the engineer s role. Advanced search combined with graphical viewing is just one of the best-in-class capablilites within DMS.

5 5 Enterprise-wide Component Data Aggregation DMS helps administer many aspects of component management, from inclusion of data sheets, establishing part lists and approved vendor lists, to managing obsolescence and environmental compliance data. The component management module can easily be plugged into enterprise processes to share component data ownership, such as part requests, part change notices, document attachments, etc. with ERP and PLM systems. This enterprise-wide data aggregation and shared data ownership eliminates redundant data entries across different systems. At the component level, DMS has the ability to associate internal company part numbers with specific manufacturer parts and suppliers. This allows designers to compare the manufacturer parts that may be used in the design. In some cases this information may highlight a difference that is significant in the specific design scenario, enabling the designer to take corrective or preventative action before production. Compliance Management DMS provides a robust compliance management capability that automatically calculates the compliance of components and designs. This functionality is scalable and can be based on compliance information from the manufacturers. DMS also provides required compliance documentation for relevant regulations. While compliance management is commonly associated with environmental regulations, such as RoHS, DMS also provides capabilities to perform compliance checks on any general or customer specific compliance requirement,- such as ESD level sensitivity. Design Flow Process Integration DMS is deeply integrated with the Expedition Enterprise design tools. This makes part research, comparison, and selection intuitive and allows engineers to leverage all information aggregated in DMS with minimal training, allowing users instant and comfortable access to functions like: Part selection/instantiation and assignment Detailed graphical previews Work in progress part list/bill of material management This level of integration, with its inherent part analysis capabilities has been shown to reduce the engineering research time by as much as 35%! Part Selection and Instantiation DMS Desktop is the Enterprise interface for performing tasks such as AVL filtering, project preferred part filtering, and lifecycle restrictions. Engineers are given all of the power for advanced component research, comparison, and evaluation. Users can adjust DMS to match their own needs and working style by adding their own search presets and establish shopping lists. Graphical Previews Within DMS Desktop, the designer can preview the detailed graphical representations of the symbols, cells, and even mapping relationships. This allows users to quickly analyze if this is the expected part, which exact symbol or cell alternate they might need, or to determine if it is complete for their purposes. 6 6 WIP Partlist Management With DMS parts list management, users are able to manage the ECAD BOM data associated with the designs and directly load the ECAD BOM data from DxDesigner. This part list captures the complex part relationships, including assembly variant details and the mechanical parts that are embedded within the cells used in the design. The integration between DMS and the design tools also allows schematic updates from BOM driven changes, such as part refinement. This ensures data consistency and reduces the typically-manual effort to enter BOM changes within the schematic. This part list information is critical to aid in maintenance of the design. If manufacturing issues are detected with a part, for example, or supply changes unexpectedly, the librarian can quickly assess where the part has been used and all designs affected by the change. This where-used information also affects part lifecycle management, enabling a company to respond quickly to obsolescence notices. Enterprise Integration and Administration DMS manages data for the electrical engineering environment and complements other extended enterprise systems such as PLMs and ERPs. It provides standardized and easy to configure interfaces to the enterprise systems, ensuring that data is entered only once and shared across the systems. This reduces the risk of redundant data entries, ensures a holistic view of component information in the technical community of the organization and makes DMS the solution for library and design management for every customer who wants to be successful in a highly competitive and global market for electronic applications.
