3 Executive Overview The Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance enhances performance while reducing both initial capital expenses and ongoing operating expenses. Key strengths include: Hybrid Storage Pool, a feature of Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance, enables superior performance at a lower price point than many competing systems. This advanced architecture enables significant capital expense benefits that have been demonstrated by recent industry-standard performance benchmark results, including the fastest SPECsfs2008 overall response-time benchmark performance ever recorded, as of Sept 10, An intuitive user interface coupled with industry-leading DTrace Analytics, a feature of Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance, reduce the time requirements to provision and manage storage, resulting in significant operating savings versus major competitors as demonstrated by thirdparty research. Application engineered storage (AES) provides tight integration with Oracle s stack, which further reduces operating expenses in Oracle environments through the use of standardized, well-developed, Oracle-supported configurations along with unique Oracle-on-Oracle features such as Hybrid Columnar Compression and Intelligent Storage Protocol, a feature that Involves tight integration and exchange of specific information between Oracle ZFS Storage and Oracle Database. 4 Introduction With application storage requirements growing at a tremendous rate, storage costs are skyrocketing. At the same time, a challenging global economy has kept IT budgets flat or declining. IT managers must balance growing needs for increased storage capacity and performance while also containing costs. Today s IT environments require storage solutions that can offer: Superior performance at a lower initial price point Greater efficiency in order to manage ongoing operating costs High levels of integration between storage infrastructure and application infrastructure to minimize onsite testing and improve overall performance and reliability. Delivering Superior Performance at a Lower Price The Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance is an enterprise multiprotocol storage platform that offers extensive functionality. With cost-effective, yet powerful, controllers, enterprise SAS storage hardware components, and an advanced operating system employing Hybrid Storage Pools, the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance delivers high performance at a lower price point than major competitors. The appliances also include a rich set of data services that can help speed up implementation and simplify data management. Hybrid Storage Pool technology (Figure 1) enables the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance s superior performance. Using an intelligent and adaptive set of algorithms to manage read operations, the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance is able to cache data stored on disk in either DRAM or flash-based memory for low latency, high I/O, and high throughput access. Similarly, write operations can be made to low latency, non-volatile flash so that they can be quickly acknowledged, allowing the system to move on to the next operation more quickly. As the data movement occurs, end-to-end Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance checksumming prevents silent data corruption. This technology allows the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance to extract maximum performance from the hardware, enabling extreme performance while minimizing price. 3

5 Figure 1: Hybrid Storage Pools transparently utilize multiple types of storage media to deliver superior performance at low cost. The rich set of data services and appliance options further enhance the economic benefits of the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance. All protocols (such as CIFS, NFS, iscsi, FC, and others) are included in the base price of the system. Various data protection options and several data compression options, as well as inline deduplication, are also included in the base price. Customers can choose between highcapacity and high-performance SAS disk drives and various memory (DRAM and flash) options to optimize for their performance and capacity needs while staying within budget. Advanced data services like remote replication and snapshot cloning are also available. Figure 2: Data services and management 4

6 All of this enables the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance to perform better at a lower price point than major competitors. This has been aggressively demonstrated by running several major industrystandard benchmark tests. SPECsfs2008 is a file protocol performance test. The Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-4 was tested and achieved over 450,702 SPECsfs2008_nfs.v3 ops/sec and overall response time of 0.70 msec, an excellent result that is much faster than major competing systems that carry similar and higher price tags. The Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-2 also obtained an impressive performance figure in the SPECsfs2008 benchmark, given its low price point. Also, the overall response time or latency for Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-2 result was much less than these same competing systems. 10 Lowering Ongoing Operating Costs Through Greater Efficiency The Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance operating system features an advanced, intuitive browser user interface (BUI) as well as a simple command line interface (CLI). Both are designed with simplicity in mind to reduce the time involved in provisioning and managing storage. In addition, the advanced DTrace Analytics package, along with its intuitive interface, allows for fast optimization of storage performance and issue resolution by allowing rapid diagnosis of bottlenecks throughout the storage stack, including the storage networking. 11 This highly efficient set of tools enables significant reduction in operating expenses versus major competitors. In fact, a third-party analysis found that the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance was 36 percent more cost efficient to manage than a comparable NetApp system. 8 Software. Hardware. Complete. Engineered to Work Together. Oracle ZFS Storage Appliances are part of the complete, integrated Oracle stack. The stack penetrates every layer of the IT stack, combining the largest and most complete set of industry and business applications software with the flagship Oracle Database and the right technology infrastructure to support it. Engineering of the entire stack to work together yields higher reliability and greater security as well as stunning performance and low TCO. One specific example of tight Oracle integration is Hybrid Columnar Compression for Oracle Database 11g. This feature is only available on Oracle storage and can result in substantially greater compression levels than can be obtained in competitors systems. Oracle s Hybrid Columnar Compression technology is a new method for organizing data within a database block. Hybrid Columnar Compression enables the highest levels of data compression and provides enterprises with tremendous cost savings and performance improvements due to reduced I/O. Hybrid Columnar Compression is optimized to use both database and storage capabilities to deliver tremendous space savings and revolutionary performance. Average storage savings can range from 20x to 50x, depending on the nature of data. Taking a conservative average savings of 10x from Hybrid Columnar Compression, IT managers can drastically reduce and often eliminate their need to purchase new storage for a significant amount of time. For example, a 100-terabyte Oracle Database achieving 10x storage savings would utilize only 10 terabytes of physical storage. With 90 terabytes of storage now available, IT organizations could potentially delay storage purchases or store up to nine more Oracle Databases. A brand-new integration with Oracle Database 12c is the advanced communication path called Oracle Intelligent Storage Protocol from Oracle. Exclusive to Oracle Database 12c and the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance, Oracle Intelligent Storage Protocol enables the storage to communicate with Oracle Database with greater insight and granularity than ever before. Previously, administrators needed to configure multiple storage shares, each with its own ZFS record size and LogBias settings. With Oracle Intelligent Storage Protocol, more than 67 percent of these critical storage parameters are automatically configured, reducing management time by more than 75 percent. Customers benefit from standardized hardware and software components and certified system configurations, helping to ease the burden of installation, training, and administration. 12 while reducing costs. Oracle ZFS Storage Appliances also include a plug-in module for Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control. This enables administrators to see an integrated view of Oracle Database and its storage systems, including the ability to view multiple systems from a single pane. Ultimately, all of this leads to a more flexible set of business processes with a lower cost of ownership. All of these integrations are examples of application engineered storage (AES). Oracle is in a unique position to engineer storage, compute, OS, and database applications to work together in a seamless, efficient manner that offers the highest performance possible.
