1 Lesson Plan Building Global Competence Objective: Students will understand the importance of protecting rainforests around the world, the global impact their protection and/or destruction have on us all, and the impact businesses have on same. CTE Standards: 2.0 Communications 2.5 Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats. 4.0 Technology 4.1 Use electronic reference materials to gather information and produce products and services. 5.0 Problem Solving and Critical Thinking 5.4 Interpret information and draw conclusions, based on the best analysis, to make informed decisions. 7.2 Explain the importance of accountability and responsibility in fulfilling personal, community, and workplace roles. Business and Finance sector. Agriculture and Natural Resources sector. 9.0 Leadership and Teamwork 9.5 Understand that the modern world is an international community and requires an expanded global view. Business & Finance Business and Finance sector. A. Business Management Pathway A3.3 Recognize a business responsibility to employees, shareholders, society, and the environment. Student Learning Outcomes: Students will recognize the local and global value of rainforests, and our environment in general, to individuals and companies alike. Students will identify ways in which rainforests can be sustained and renewed. Students will identify ways in which businesses can be profitable while also protecting rainforests and the environment.

2 Unit Name: Rainforests and Their Global Effects on People of the World and the World of Business Timing of Activities: This lesson will require seven class periods of approximately 50 minutes each. Note: If students finish their final projects early, it may only require six days. Day One: Show pdf slideshow entitled The Tropical Rainforest Pay special attention to slides (61 to the end) Rainforest Destruction: Slides Gifts from the Rainforest: Slides What We Can Do: Slides Note: this must be purchased from teachersdiscovery.com Day Two: (Detailing Rainforest Destruction & the Part We Play) Show the following videos and discuss them in with students: Destruction of the Rainforest (17 min) Rainforest Tribes Declare War on Big Oil Destroying Rainforest, Very Sad (10:17) Day Three: (Preserving and Renewing Rainforests) Show the following videos and discuss them with students Save the Rainforest (4:02 min.) Using Tropical Forest Sustainably: Simply Explained (5:02 min.) Dear Future Generations: Sorry (6:02 min.) Days Four through Six: Students work in groups, use what they ve learned, conduct additional research, and come up with ideas for an educational and/or marketing tri-fold brochure. Day Seven: Students present their ideas and brochures to a business industry panel for comments, suggestions and feedback.

3 Class Discussion Questions: Day One: What are some of the benefits that rainforests provide to the entire world? How are rainforests being destroyed? What are some of the reasons the rainforests are being destroyed? What kind of people and/or organizations are destroying the rainforests? Why are they destroying the rainforests? What might happen to us all if the destruction continues? Day Two: What are some additional ways in which rainforests are being destroyed? Aside from the forests themselves, what else is being destroyed in the process? How do we here in the U.S. contribute to that destruction? What about our local environment is it also important to preserve and protect it? Day Three: What does it mean to harvest something sustainably? What can individuals do to stop the destruction of rainforests and/or help to preserve and renew them? What can businesses do to stop the destruction and or help with the preservation and renewal? Be sure to discuss the concept from today s second video (Using Tropical Forest Sustainably: Simply Explained) that sustainable use of rainforests can be more profitable for all in the long run than deforestation. Ask: Why is sustainable use is more profitable than deforestation? If allowed to continue endlessly, what would happen to those people and companies that keep destroying the rainforests? In what ways can people and companies profit from rainforests without destroying them? How Student Learning will be Assessed: Student learning will be assessed via: Observation of their class participation in discussions Checking for understanding A Final project A Presentation of their Final Project The students final project will be to work in teams of 2-4. In their groups, they are to review the PowerPoint presentation and videos, and conduct additional research for more information on the subject. Students are to choose one of the following four topics: Identify at least Three (3) Ways: 1. Companies would suffer if the deforestation of rainforests continues. (Loss of unique life-saving resources, diminished quality of existing resourcesincluding water, loss of oxygen worldwide, loss of customers if they boycott) 2. Companies can profit from the rainforests without destroying them. (Sustainably harvest naturally growing organic foods, Sustainably harvest plants for medicines, Sustainably harvest trees for wood)

4 3. That individuals can contribute to the protection and restoration of the rainforests. (Plant trees, donate money to rainforest protection causes, boycott companies that destroy the rainforests, use less plastic, be environmentally conscientious) 4. That any company can contribute to the protection and restoration of the rainforests. (Donate to rainforest protection causes, boycott companies that destroy the rainforests, use only sustainably harvested products, be environmentally conscientious about what they do as well) 5. That they would use their own business to protect and restore rainforests, if/when they become business owners themselves. (Donate portion of profits to rainforest protection causes, allow workers paid leave to donate time to help indigenous people of the rainforests, donate time and/or allow workers paid leave to help scientists collect and identify life-saving species). Note: Idea suggestions for teachers are in green. Note: Each subject should be covered relatively equally. Thus, if there are 36 students in class, and groups are made up of four students each, each subject should be covered by at least one group, with four subject being covered by a two groups. Once they have chosen their topic, students can then spend two to three class periods researching and working together to create a tri-fold brochure that explains the global benefits of rainforests and their specific topic and ideas. Students will present their ideas, along with their brochures, to a panel of business professionals for comments, suggestions and feedback.
