1 Parent Curriculum Leaflet Year 4 Autumn 2014 Welcome back This first term together looks busy, but exciting with lots of learning opportunities for the children. The purpose of this leaflet is to give you an overview of this term s learning. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding the information given in this leaflet. Miss Mortimore Here are some questions the children would like answering What did the Romans wear? Are there any famous Roman artworks or famous artists? What type of music did the Romans listen to? What food did the Romans eat?
2 Curriculum Content The information below outlines the expected level the majority of children will be working at. We will challenge and support children to access the curriculum at a level appropriate to their needs. Maths Number recognise the place value of four digit numbers order and compare numbers beyond 1000 round any number to the nearest 10, 100 or Mental addition and subtraction Multiplication - recall multiplication facts up to 12 x 12 Division - recall division facts up to 12 x 12 Geometry Compare and classify geometric shapes identify lines of symmetry in 2D shapes Measurement compare and calculate different measures including money in pounds and pence convert between different units of measure (eg hours to minutes, kilometre to metre) Problem Solving applying their understanding from other areas of maths to solving problems recording and checking their work carefully and ensuring the answers are clear and relevant Data Handling gathering, ordering and recording information independently interpreting information through graphs and tables to form conclusions
3 English Narrative Myths and Legends Children will read and hear a selection of myths and legends, identifying their key features. Children will focus on the legend of Robin Hood for inspiration before writing their own myth/ legend. Stories with historical settings. Children will read lots of stories with historical settings, identifying details in the texts that describe characters and settings. Children will write their own short stories based on a Roman event. Non-Fiction Leaflets Children will recognise the structure and language features of a Newspaper. They will design and produce a newspaper article using research on a Roman event of their choice. Explanation Texts Using inventions as a topic, the children will read and analyse explanation texts understanding the choice of language the author has used and for what effect. Children will design their own invention and will present their ideas to the rest of the class. Poetry Creating Images Children can write and perform poems, using language to create an effect, choosing appropriate presentational features and using ICT to enhance the effect. Exploring Form Children study poems that can be performed and identify performance techniques. Children read and recite poems discussing vocabulary, structure and language features used to create effects. Children work collaboratively to organise, rehearse and present their own poetry presentations Spelling Understanding the difference between plural and possessive -s Suffixes -ation, -ly and -ous Punctuation and Grammar Definition of Word Classes (e.g. noun, pronoun, verb, adverbs, fronted adverbials and adjectives) and sentence construction Accurate use of known punctuation and extending to the use of paragraphs to structure writing.
4 Topic RE Music PSHE In this Autumn term, we will be exploring the topic The Romans. Understanding the Arts Designing a shield/roman headgear Exploring ideas about Roman Art. Scientific and technological understanding Understanding the digestive system. Looking into animal food chains. Investigating human and animal teeth and exploring the effect diet has on the health of teeth. Understanding the anatomy of a tooth and the different types of teeth. Knowing the function of each type of tooth for humans and animals. Historical, geographical and social understanding Describe the history of the child s own family and our community using a family tree. Using maps of the UK and the World find the location of the children s ancestors and discuss how they came to be where they are now and why. Locating Rome and Italy - Looking into the similarities and differences between Italy and UK. Creation This unit is designed to give some insight into how we are called to be part of God s creation. Prayers, Saints and Feasts This unit explores the twin themes of peace and forgiveness expressed both by Jesus and in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Advent This unit is designed to deepen pupils knowledge and understanding of the season of Advent. We will use the Music Express scheme to explore descriptive sounds and rhythmic patterns gaining an understanding of pulse, rhythm, pitch and tempo. We will also be learning to play the recorder and read stave music notation. New Beginnings This is all about encouraging the children to value themselves and each other as individuals. Getting On and Falling Out This encourages children to explore, understand and manage their feelings. Particular emphasis is placed on empathy.
5 PE Games Invasion games, tactics, strategy, ball control and movement. Gym Travelling, body shapes and balance using the floor and apparatus. Dance Creating and developing motifs in response to music, words, poetry and images.
