1 March 12, 2017 Basic Truth: Jesus wants to be my friend forever. Key Question: How can you love like Jesus? Bottom Line: I can love everyone. Memory Verse: Love one another. John 13:34, NIV Bible Story Focus: I can share when I have a lot. Bigger Barns Luke 12:16-21 Make It Fun (Introductory Activities, 10 minutes) Prepare to offer one or more of the following activities as Your 3-, 4-, or 5-year-olds arrive. Let one or two teachers lead activities in different areas of the room while another teacher greets parents and kids at the door. 1. How Many? How Many? is an activity that teaches simple math skills while introduces the concept of the upcoming Bible story. What You Need: Stars Activity Page, white cardstock, and wall tape Before the Activity: Copy the Stars Activity Pages onto the cardstock. Tape one of the pictures on a wall on one side of the room low enough where the children can see it. Tape the other picture on an opposite wall of the first picture, also low enough where the children can see it. During the Activity: Have the children stand in the middle of the activity area. Introduce the pictures as one being a little and the other picture as being a lot. Tell the children to look for the picture with a little. Then encourage the children to walk to the picture with a little bit of stars. Then tell them to look for the picture with a lot. Encourage the children to walk to the picture with a lot of stars. Repeat the activity several times while getting faster each time. Say a little and as soon as they get to that picture, quickly say a lot, and have them move back and forth at a faster pace than before. Before the Activity: Look at the pictures that I have hung on the wall. (Point.) This picture has stars on it. There are not very many stars. There s just a little. (Point.) During the Activity: When I say a little, I want you to walk to the picture with just a few stars and when I say a lot walk to the picture with many stars. Are you ready? (Do activity.) After the Activity: You did an AWESOME job! Today we are going to hear a fantastic Bible story about what someone with A LOT should do for those who have A LITTLE! Memory Verse: Love one another. John 13:34, NIV Bible Story Focus: I can share when I have a lot. Bigger Barns Luke 12:16-21 Make It Stick (Application Activities, 35 minutes) These activities are designed to help preschoolers understand and remember today s Bible story and Bottom Line. Offer as many of the following activities as your time, facilities, resources, and leadership allow. You may want to lead one activity at a time. Or offer two activities at once and allow half the kids to participate in each. Then switch groups and repeat the activities. 1. Stack the Cups Stack the Cups is an activity that uses fine motor skills, letter recognition, and ordering to review the memory verse. What You Need: 10 plastic cups, Love One Another Activity Page, white cardstock, red construction paper OR heart stickers, scissors, and tape Before the Activity: Copy the Love One Another Activity Page onto cardstock and cut apart. Use the tape to attach each word of the verse onto separate cups. Use the red Curriculum Materials for 3- through 5-year-olds 2017 The rethink Group. All rights reserved. 2
3 construction paper to cut out six hearts OR use six heart stickers. Place a heart on the remaining six cups (the cups without a word from the verse). During the Activity: Point out the words on the cups and read the verse with the children. Then show them how to line them up on the floor in order. Point to the words and repeat the verse again. Then let the children stack the remaining heart cups on top of the verse cups to create a pyramid. So you should have the four verse cups on the bottom, a row of three heart cups for the second row, then a row with two heart cups on for the third row, and finally one heart cup on the top. Once the pyramid is complete, point out the words of the verse and repeat it together again. During the Activity: Do you see these cups I have today? Let s read them together: Love one another, John 13:34. Great job! Let s read our verse one more time. (Point to each cup as you read together.) Excellent! I m going to place these cups in a row here on the floor. Then I need you to help me make a pyramid by stacking the rest of these cups on top. (Point to cups and help stack them.) After the Activity: Great job saying our memory verse and helping stack the cups! Can someone tell me what you see on these cups? (Pause for responses.) Yes! Hearts. These hearts remind me to love everyone, just like Jesus does. Tell me, How can you love like Jesus? [Bottom Line] I can love everyone. Good job, friends! 2. Craft Stick Barns Craft Stick Barns is an activity that uses fine motor skills and creativity to allow kids to build a house and review today s Bible story. What You Need: Craft sticks (at least 8 per child), black construction paper, glue sticks, Barn Reference Activity Page, and Avery labels #5160 or equivalent, Before the Activity: Place the glue sticks in the center of the table. Copy Barn Reference on the labels. During the Activity: Give each child a piece of black construction paper and at least eight craft sticks. Encourage the children to lay their craft sticks within their sheet of paper to create a barn. They do not have to use all their craft sticks. Once they ve arranged their sticks the way they want them, instruct them to use the glue sticks to glue the craft sticks down onto the paper and add a label. 4 Before the Activity: In our Bible story, the farmer built bigger barns to hold all of his grain. Today, I want us to build some barns of our own with these craft sticks! (Hand out eight craft sticks to each child.) During the Activity: Now I m going to give each of you a piece of black construction paper and I want you to lay down your craft sticks any way you d like to create your own barn. (Pass out construction paper.) Once you ve arranged your sticks, use the glue sticks in the center of the table to glue them in place. Let me know if you need any help! After the Activity: Your barns look amazing! Great job, everyone. I wish the farmer in our story today had chosen to share when he had a lot. That s one big way you can show love to others by sharing. If you had extra, would you show love and share? (Pause for responses.) I hope so! How can you love like Jesus? [Bottom Line] I can love everyone. 3. Sharing Sharing is an activity that teaches the children the concept of today s Bible story through actions. Be sure to list the foods you will be using today on the Allergy Alert Poster and post it at the door to your room. What You Need: Allergy Alert Poster, white cardstock, large tub, uncooked macaroni noodles, 3 medium-sized plush friends, 3 small bowls, and a small cup Before the Activity: Copy the Allergy Alert Poster onto the white cardstock and hang it on the door. Fill the tub with the macaroni. Place the plush friends in a sitting position in the middle of the activity area. Place a bowl in front of each plush friend. Place one piece of macaroni in each bowl. During the Activity: Give the children the tub of macaroni and tell them that they have A LOT. Point to the plush friend s bowls and say they have A LITTLE. Ask the children to use the cup to share their macaroni with their plush friends. Be sure that all of the children have a turn filling the bowls. If you have a large group, you may need to empty the bowls so that they can be filled again. Before the Activity: WOW! Look at all of this macaroni! (Point.) You have A LOT! Our story today told us that Jesus wants us to share with other people. He wants us to love and help everyone! How can you love like Jesus? [Bottom Line] I can love everyone! Bigger Barns Luke 12:16-21 Make It Real (Small Groups, 5 minutes) Make It Real is designed to help preschoolers understand how the Bottom Line applies to them. They ll discuss real-life experiences and share prayer requests. Divide kids into Small Groups of about five to eight children with each leader. Ideally, assign the same Small Group Leader to the same group of preschoolers for the entire year. Small Group Time What You Need: Paperclip Memory Verse Card (from the Week One Activity Pages on the Website) in your Bible at John 13:34. Provide a journal and a fun-shaped pen for each small group. SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): Have you ever had a whole lot of something? Maybe you had a lot of candy or a lot of toys or a lot of clothes and it was way more than what you needed? (Pause for responses.) Me too! And so did the man in our Bible story today. He had so much food that it was way more than he needed. What did the man in our story do when he had more than he needed? (Pause for responses.) You re right! He built bigger barns to hold it and he kept all the food for himself. Now let s think. If we had way more than we needed of something, what could we do with it to show people that we love everyone the way Jesus loves everyone? 6 responses.) You re right again! We can share! Sharing is one way we can love everyone like Jesus loves everyone. Loving everyone is how we love like Jesus. How can you love like Jesus? CHILDREN and SGL: [Bottom Line] I can love everyone. SGL: You got it! And sharing is a great way to love everyone! Stand up with me and let s practice saying our new Bible verse. (Open Bible to memory verse card.) Do you remember it? It says (read verse from the Bible): Love one another, John 13:34. That is the perfect verse to help us remember to love everyone. Let s say it together with the motions. (Lay Bible down.) CHILDREN and SGL: Love (hug yourself and twist) one another (point to all your friends), John 13:34. (Open your hands like a book.) (Repeat the verse with the motions several times together.) SGL: Hugging myself is my favorite part. What a great verse! Good job! (Two thumbs up.) Now come sit with me. It s time to write in our prayer journal. Today we re going to write about things we can share. Think about all the stuff you have. Is there anything you have a whole lot of? Like way more than you need? Maybe a lot of toys or snacks? Think about what you have that you can share. I ll write everyone s name in our prayer journal. When I say your name, I want you to tell me one thing you can share and I ll write it beside your name. We can use the list we make when we pray. (Open prayer journal and hold your fun pen. Write each child s name and what they say beside their name. Remember to print the words they say so the children can recognize their names and the letters.) These are great things to share! Let s use our list and ask God to help us look for times we can share so people will know we love them like Jesus loves them. Would anyone like to pray before I pray?
