Activities: Name of Activity Time Group agreements and Introductions minutes Abstinence Mixer 7 minutes Contraceptive Breakdown Worksheet 5 minutes 4 Role Play Skits 5 minutes 5 Conclusion/Anonymous Questions 5 minutes. Group agreements and introductions 5 minutes Introduce yourself. Introduce or review group agreements. Introductions of students if not a series or new students have been added. If necessary, quickly go over Planned Parenthood, what we are and what this program is. If it is a series, ask students to recap what they remember from the previous class. Quickly review other sexuality education topics covered previously by referring back to their topics and inviting students to share what they have learned so far. Introduce topic. Say, Today s topic is birth control methods, including abstinence. Some people will need to know this soon. Some people won t need to know it for years. Some people will only use this information once or twice for themselves. Some people will want to use it to tell their friends. No matter how this information will be used in someone s personal decision making, we know this lesson is important for everyone. Introduce the key concepts. Say, We re going to cover a lot of information, but there are four main pieces of information that I want you to remember. During class, when we get to one of those pieces of info, we ll let you know and post it somewhere you can see it.. Post the title page that states Remember this! on the top of the board. Ask, Why do you think it might be important for all teens to learn about birth control? During or at the end of this discussion, state and post Key Concept: If used consistently and correctly, birth control can reduce someone s risk of becoming pregnant.. Intro Activity 0 minutes Introduce the topic of abstinence. Say, After this first activity, we re going to go over all the different methods someone who is sexually active can use to prevent pregnancy. Our first activity is about the only 00% effective method. Which is that? (Abstinence) Here are three things we want you all to know about Abstinence: Education Department
. Abstinence means to not do something. Sexual abstinence can be a lot of things, anywhere from refraining from any sexual contact at all, to refraining from certain sexual activities.. People can abstain from sexual activity at any point in their life, at any time, for any reason, and it could be about their health, their values, their experience, their relationship, etc.. People practicing sexual abstinence do not always call it that. Often they say I m choosing to not have sex. Introduce the Abstinence Mixer game. Say, We are going to do an activity where you will hear what your classmates think about sexual abstinence. There are no right or wrong answers, so please be respectful of everyone s opinions and beliefs. In just a moment you will have minutes to walk around the room and ask as many people as possible the question written on your card. Try to remember the answers you hear, because we will ask you to report back after. I ll let you know when it s time to take a seat. Abstinence Mixer Instructions Pass out the abstinence cards, making sure all three colors are distributed. Give students three minutes to mingle and ask their questions, then have them return to their seats. Facilitate a discussion about abstinence by going over the mixer questions. Read out the questions, and have students raise their hand if they had that card. Several students with each question should report back to the class. Keep the conversation abstinence-positive. Card Number : What are two challenges? - Benefits: It s free and always available; It s 00% effective, but only if people abstain from all risky activity; People can choose abstinence at any point in their lives for any reason - Challenges: Peer pressure ~ Requires good communication and planning ~ Attraction Card Number : choose not to have sex even if they or sexually transmitted infections? - Their religious or cultural beliefs; They re not ready to have sex ; They don t feel like their relationship is ready; Past Experiences; Health reasons Card Number : What are skills that a person or a couple who chose not to have sex - Know yourself and your boundaries; Communication; Honesty ; Respect each other s limits; Planning; How to protect yourself if you stop abstaining Education Department
. Contraceptive Breakdown Worksheet 5 minutes Introduce the Contraceptive Breakdown activity. Say, In a minute, you will all have an opportunity to learn about different kinds of birth control methods. For the first part of the activity, you will work individually to answer questions about different birth control methods using a handout I will provide. After folks have completed their worksheets, there will be time for folks to share some of what they learned. Handout and Worksheet Instructions Give each student a Birth Your Seat worksheet, as well as the accompanying handout. Give students 5 minutes to complete their worksheets. Worksheet Share Backs Using the worksheet key provided, guide students through a review of their findings. Invite several students to share what information they recorded about the individual methods they chose to research. Be sure to confirm the students findings using the information in the handout. As time allows, cover as many methods as possible. After reviewing their findings for the individual methods, go through the second half of the worksheet with the class. Be sure to read through the worksheet. Further, it is important to share information about emergency contraception so there is time to specify that this method is not recommended as a form of regular birth control half of the worksheet with the class. Be sure to read through the entire worksheet, as some of the information will vary by state. Further, it is important to share information about emergency contraception so there is time to specify that this method is not recommended as a form of regular birth control. Conclusion Say, So what s the best birth control method? (get answers from the class). There s actually no one right answer. What we know is that the best birth control method for any person is actually whichever one they will really use correctly and consistently, and that truly fits with their life and values. People get to decide that individually. To wrap up the sheet debrief state, Many teens successfully use birth control and post this Key Concept Ask the class where people can get different types of birth control. Share three local affordable and confidential health care resources where people can access birth control. Education Department 4
4. Role Play Skits 5 minutes Note to facilitator: If groups don t have a lot of trust for each other, students may be reticent to participate. They might joke around and not take the activity seriously. If you believe your class would not handle role playing well, consider using the modification provided. Role Play Instructions Explain that students, in pairs, are going to use a scenario given to them to create a short skit that they may get to act out in front of the class. They should read the scenario and assume the roles of the people in the skit. If there is a group of three people, one can be a friend. Write an abbreviated version of these instructions on the board: Explain that they have 5 minutes to plan out a skit that shows the two people talking about how they re going to use protection. The conversation might include: () What method they will use and how to get it, and () if there is disagreement, how it might be resolved. Stress that situations represent a range of people of different ages, backgrounds, values and sexual orientations. Even if they do not agree with a scenario, they should try to plan it out. No one will be forced to act out their scenario if they feel uncomfortable. If time allows, ask for two students to help you act out a situation as an example. Hand out one Role Play Scenario slip of paper to each pair or triad. For large classes, some groups may have the same scenario. Remind them of their time limit. Tell students each skit should last about minutes. When groups are ready, have as many groups demonstrate their role plays as there is time for. In small groups or as a whole class, read a scenario and discuss what would be effective and easy to use birth control method(s) for the people involved 5. Closure / Questions 5 minutes Invite students to fill out an anonymous question card. Even if they don t have a question, they can write something they learned in the class. Facilitate a debriefing activity using the following questions. You may facilitate this activity using different multiple intelligences, including: large or small group discussion, pair share, or journaling.. What did you learn about birth control today?. What type of birth control do you think is best for teenagers?. What information will you pass on to friends and family? Thank students for their participation and respect for this sometimes difficult topic. Check again for any closing comments or questions. Let students know that you ll be around afterwards if they have a question they d like to ask you Education Department 5

Abstinence and Birth Control Method Role Play Scenarios. Michael and Josie have been a couple for over two years. They are very religious and have decided to wait to wait until they are married to have sex. Michael had a friend of the family who died of AIDS, and Josie s cousin has been in and out of the STD clinic over the past few years. They both want to wait to have sex until they are truly committed to each other, because they worry about STDs, but they are growing impatient.. Soonyee and Jin are a couple in college. They are having sex and using condoms so they don t get pregnant or give one another STDs. Jin is getting nervous about using condoms because one slipped off the last time they had sex. He wants to stop having sex until Soonyee starts using another birth control method. Soonyee is adamant that she does not want any extra hormones in her body.. Madison and Brad are engaged to be married and in their mid-twenties. Neither of them has ever done any drugs and they only drink occasionally. They are both sure that they re faithful to each other. They were high school sweethearts and neither of them has ever had other partners. Brad wants to stop using condoms, because he feels there is no risk of STDs. Madison has heard bad stories from her friend who is on birth control pills. Brad thinks Madison should start the IUD or implant, because neither of them want to have children for the next 4-5 years. 4. Cole and Mayra have been married for 0 years. They have two children and have decided they do not want to have any more. Mayra wants Cole to get a vasectomy because it s cheaper and the recovery time is less than a tubal ligation. She s tired of always being responsible for birth control, because she was on birth control the entire time they have known each other, except when they tried to have children. 5. Sarah and Avi have been dating for a month after meeting each other at a work party. They started having sex soon after they became a couple, and decided not to see other people. In the beginning, Sarah said she was on the pill, so they didn t have to worry about her getting pregnant. Avi knows that Sarah can be a little forgetful; in fact, she forgot to bring her pills when they went skiing for a weekend. He wants to start using condoms, but is worried she will think he is cheating if he suggests them. He is not interested in getting involved with other people. 6. Miguel and Bianca just came back from their amazing honeymoon in Hawaii. They have talked a lot about their future together. Miguel wants to go to graduate school for computer engineering. Bianca is a captain in the Army. They are very interested in having two kids after grad school and Bianca s current tour of duty. They also want there to be about three years between their kids, because they both have older siblings who are three years older Education Department
and think it s a good age difference. They are talking about all the options they have for birth control. 7. Xavier and Brandi are seniors in high school. They have been dating since the end of sophomore year. They started having sex the summer after junior year. Brandi gets the Depo shot every three months so she doesn t get pregnant. Recently she has been noticing that she is gaining weight, even though she works out all the time for softball and volleyball. She wants to have a conversation with Xavier about changing methods, but is embarrassed to tell him the reason why. 8. Tamara and Zachary are both freshmen in high school. They have been dating for four weeks but have known each other since camp this past summer. The other day they made out and things got a little heated. Up to this point, Zachary had wanted to wait until he was married to have sex. Tamara hasn t given much thought to her beliefs about having sex, but she knows that she wants to go to college and possibly medical school. 9. Jamie and Stan have been dating for five months. Jamie is a sophomore in high school and lives with her father one week and with her mother the next. Stan is a senior in high school and is considering joining the Navy after he graduates. The couple doesn t want to think too far ahead and is not sure what the future holds for their relationship after Stan graduates. Education Department
