1 After High School (1/3) Activity: Individual or pairs 30 MINUTES Materials: One activity handout per student or pair and internet access Objective: The purpose of this activity is for students to evaluate the components of a budget for a young adult living alone. Students will gain an awareness of the realities of managing finances on their own. STANDARD Planning and Money Management Standard 1: Develop a plan for spending and saving. Given a scenario, design a personal budget for a young person living alone. Procedure Distribute the handout to students. Students will read the given scenarios and use the foundationsu.com budgeting tool to design a budget for each young adult. While budgets will vary slightly, make sure that students assign money for all necessary categories, including saving and giving. Note: Have students deduct 20% of the income for payroll taxes (gross income - 20% of gross income = net income). Students should use the net income as the starting income for the budget. Scenario 1 Lisa is a third-year college student living alone in an apartment. She works 20 hours a week at a local bank. She makes $10 per hour. Lisa has a savings account that she built up during high school and by working full-time summer jobs. During the school year, she withdraws $30 per month in order to help cover her living expenses. Lisa s college tuition and books are covered by her scholarships. Lisa s parents help her by providing an additional $00 a month. Lisa s parents also provide her health insurance. Lisa s fixed monthly expenses are: Lisa s budget must also include: Giving, Saving, Food, Gas, Entertainment and Personal Answer Key: Lisa Gross monthly income (from part-time job)...20 x $10 = $200; $200 x 4 = $800 Net monthly income (from part-time job)...$800 x.80 = $640 Net monthly income (from part-time job)...$640 Income from savings...$30 Support from parents...$00 Total Income...$1,490
2 After High School (2/3) Answer Key: Lisa (Continued) Insurance (renter s and ID theft)...$1 Students need to budget the remaining money for the following categories: Giving, Saving, Food, Gas, Entertainment and Personal Encourage students to consider spending alternatives like riding the city bus or biking (drop car insurance and gas expenses) or doing without cable TV. Scenario 2 James works full time as an entry-level web designer since earning his certification. He earns $47,000 a year. He rents an apartment by himself. He has a credit card, which he used to purchase furniture, with a balance of $3,23. Unfortunately, to celebrate his first job, James also financed a new car. His car cost $28,000. His payments are $4 for a term of years. James has health insurance and disability insurance through his employer, which cost him $18 a month. He also contributes 4% of his (gross) income to his 401(k). James fixed monthly expenses include: Cell phone...$8 (Note: At 17% interest, it will take 26 months to pay off this credit card debt.) James budget must also include: Giving, Saving, Food, Gas, Entertainment and Personal
3 After High School (3/3) Answer Key: James Net Annual Income...$47,000 x.80 = $37,600 Net Monthly Income...$37,600/12 = $3,133 Calculate 4% of gross income for 401(k)...$47,000 x.04 = $1,880 (1,880/12 = $17) Cell phone...$8 (Note: At 17% interest, it will take 26 months to pay off this credit card debt.) Students need to budget the remaining money for the following categories: Giving, Saving, Food, Gas, Entertainment and Personal Encourage students to consider spending alternatives like doing without cable TV, selling the car, or holding off on contributing to retirement until the debt is paid off (following the Five Foundations). Scenario 3 Recalculate James budget without the credit card and car loan debts. In this scenario, James paid cash for an inexpensive used car and furnished his apartment with used furniture. He has three main financial goals now that he is earning his first career income. Add into his budget a sinking fund for a newer used car that he plans to purchase one year from now. James also has a goal of investing a full 1% of his income for retirement (instead of just 4% of his income). The third thing he wants to do is begin saving for a down payment on his first house. Consider: How much extra money does James have to put toward his financial goals now that he is not making payments on past purchases? Students should note the extra flexibility with James income when there are no debt payments. James is now able to set and meet both short- and long-term financial goals.
