1 PARCC Language Arts Assessment (Grades 3-11) The Parents Guide Mr. Mark Jarmon Ms. Patricia Griggs Ms. Patricia Reck February

2 ELA Overview Careful, close reading of authentic complex literary and informational texts Full range of reading and writing across the disciplines, including science and social studies texts Questions worth answering, ordered in a way that builds meaning. 2

3 ELA Overview Focus on students citing evidence from texts throughout the assessment Focus on words that matter most in the texts, words essential to understanding a particular text academic vocabulary that can be found throughout complex texts. Writing tasks that require students to write to sources 3

4 What is close reading? Careful, sustained interpretation of a brief passage of text Involves going into the passage multiple times to extract different information E.g. character traits, theme, vocabulary, author s craft Goal is to create stronger readers. Strong readings are supported by a greater degree of textual evidence 4

5 3 types of tasks Narrative - Students will have to complete a story and write in the style of the author Literary Analysis Students will have to read two short literary texts that are related in some way Research Simulation Task Students will look at multiple perspectives from a single area (may be science or social studies related) and answer a prompt based on evidence from the text or video. 5

6 PARCC Released Samples Write an essay that Explains how words and actions are important to plot Identifies a theme Describes each character s point of view Compares a topic in 2 different articles Write a narrative Retelling the story from a different point of view That continues the story 6

11 Research Simulation Task 5 th grade sample Readings/video Topic: penguin rescues Essay Compare how the articles by Lauren Tarshis and Dyan denapoli and the video describe penguin rescue efforts after oil spills. Support your essay with information from all three sources. 11

12 Narrative Task 3 rd grade sample Reading: A Once in a Lifetime Experience by Sandra Beswetherick Essay question This story tells about Derrick s first camping trip. Write Derrick s journal entry about this camping trip. Include information about how the characters responded to the events in the story as you write the journal entry. 12

13 Literary Analysis Task 8 th grade sample Readings: Confetti Girl by Diana Lopez and Tortilla Sun by Jennifer Cervantes Essay: In Confetti Girl and Tortilla Sun, the narrator s have points of view different from those of their parents. Write an essay analyzing how these differences in points of view create tension in both stories. Remember to use details from both texts to support your ideas. 13

14 High school samples 9 th grade RST - Write an essay that compares and contrasts a primary argument in each text that you have read regarding the decision to drop the atomic bomb. 10 th grade NT - Using what you know about Mr. Harris, write a narrative story that describes how he chooses which road to take and the experiences he has on his return journey. 14

15 PARCC vs. NJASK NJASK Read the writing prompt below and complete the writing activity: Jump out of bed! Look out the window! It is a perfect weather day! Write a story about a day when the weather seemed perfect. PARCC You have read two texts about famous people in American history who solved a problem by working to make a change. Write an article for your school newspaper describing how Eliza and Carver faced challenges to change something in America. In your article, be sure to describe in detail why some solutions they tried worked and others did not work. Tell how the challenges each one faced were the same and how they were different. 15
