3 Set of guidelines Set out: Code of Ethics What does a code of ethics set? Sets a professional standard Increases: Many organizations govern themselves on this code, especially when handling sensitive issues Professionals in areas like investments, health care, or interactions with other cultures really use codes How is a code of ethics set up? Typically structured with a purpose statement at the top. Think about the Liv n the Knight Life Posters around school Should establish the goals and aspirations of the parent group Following the introduction there is a basic outline that sets out specific behaviors expected of members of the association Structure continued Easy to follow and clear. KISS principle Short and to the point Target the most important things you want your members to know and follow Play devil s advocate and see if you should really keep the rules you are imposing Assignment You are to create an Ethical Code for my classroom. You need to establish a code that follows the Liv n the Knight Life theme that we have at RHS. You need a purpose statement that explains the goals and aspirations of this classroom you can use my classroom expectations as a guideline. You may make it specific to classroom or lab behavior. You need a total of no more than 5 regulations that all of us can follow. You will brainstorm on your own and then work with a group to create a poster size code of ethics that will hang in the classroom. You will present your code of ethics to the class and I will record you while you do this for morning announcements. The best presentation and overall code of ethics will win extra credit. Assignment Develop 5 classroom expectations that are important to a Liv n the Knight Life theme Compare and contrast your expectations with your team members Write out a purpose statement with clear goals and aspirations Combine your expectations to create a team ethical code 3

The Fifth Quarter Organ Procurement The Abbate family had to make a major medical decision that impacted the lives of others There are several moral and ethical debates in this movie Organ donation End of life decisions In order for hospitals to receive Medicare/Medicaid Funding, they are required to identify potential organ donors when a patient is near death or death is imminent Organ Procurement Programs Education of staff about organ donation and the process of organ donation Diagnosis of end-stage organ failure Common causes: Get on the OPTN Waiting List Referral from a doctor Get information. Research the topic. Select a transplant program Location, Insurance, Financial support, Support Groups Evaluation Appointment: are you a good candidate? Get listed. 4

Anti-rejection meds: up to 2,500 a month (after insurance) Over 250,000 for a kidney transplant and over 1.2 million for a heart transplant Plan your finances Put together a financial plan Check to see what your insurance covers You re responsible for what insurance doesn t cover Work with financial coordinator Understand how your insurance company's benefits apply to transplant surgery Make a financial plan for paying for your transplant Make a financial plan for nonmedical (for example, living expenses) costs Locate additional sources of funding, if necessary Understand (and, if necessary, correct) bills from hospitals, doctors, pharmacies, and other providers. Waiting for an Organ Donor Can be stressful b/c you don t know how long you will wait Hearts Lungs Livers Kidneys Pancreas Intestine Organ Median national waiting time 113 days 141 days 361 days 1,219 days 260 days 159 days The waiting game: Take care of health Keep scheduled appointments Follow diet/exercise plans Stay involved/active Maintain social network Be available Be prepared with transporation Understand how matches are made and organs are allocated Blood type, body size, severity of patient's medical condition, distance between the donor's hospital and the patient's hospital, the patient's waiting time, and the availability of the potential recipient (e.g., the patient can be contacted and has no current infection or other temporary reason that transplant cannot take place).
