Delancey; Collections of the New York Historical Society for the Year Note: Barbara [Lutes] Martin s son, James, received land as a result of his father (Thomas) s petition for Barbara as the daughter of a Loyalist. Thomas Martin s petition says your Petitioners wife is the Daughter of a Loyalist of Coenrade Lutzs. The petition does not say she is a daughter of Coenrade Lutz, it says she is the daughter of Conenrade Lutz s Loyalist. From the documents presented, it seems clear that Conrad Lutz s Loyalist is John Lutz. Early church records (Proof 7B) show members of this family having children in New York around Thomas Martin and Barbara Lutes had Maria bpt May 7, 1784 with Maria Lutz as a witness. This is seen about the same time John and Ann Margaretha [Teiss] were baptizing their children (Conrad being a sponsor of one of those children.). Those dates fit with the account that Conrad was one of a band that came to Canada in the exodus following the war and the subsequent identification of he and John as sons of John Lutz. Barbara s husband Thomas Martin may or may not be the same person identified with John Lutz in the 3 rd Report of the Bureau of Archives for the Province of Ontario dated 1791 (PROOF 7F). Both men seemed to have been deceased at the time of the report since the nature of the petition is to have previous agreements made by these men honored. It would seem both men lived long enough to get to Canada but died shortly after. A case could be made that Thomas Martin was the son in law of John Lutz and that Thomas having died between the time he petitioned for land (1786) and 1791, left children too young to receive land until they were of age as was the case of their son James, who, in 1835, petitioned for his mother s land as the daughter of a Loyalist (see PROOF 6A).
