2 ITEM: IMG-8134 This letter will serve as the certificate of authenticity for the George Washington signature pictured above. DESCRIPTION: 4 x1 paper slip clipped from a 1768 Mountain Road Lottery ticket, hand signed boldly in fountain pen by George Washington. This signature is attached to a 6 x 4 note written in another hand explaining how the previous owner, Mr. David Hill, came to acquire the signature. HISTORY: The Mountain Road Lottery was a project conceived in 1767 by Washington. The idea was to raise funds to build a road through the Allegheny Mountains in Virginia and to construct a resort. The lottery ultimately failed, however, the tickets became collector s items. This signature comes from the personal collection of Jared Sparks, the 17th president of Harvard University and noted Washington historian, who donated it to a charity in The signature sold to a Mr. David Hill for a whopping $1.25.
3 ITEM: IMG-8127 This letter will serve as the certificate of authenticity for the John Adams signature pictured above. DESCRIPTION: 5.75 x 3 slip clipped from a 1773 legal document hand signed in fountain pen by John Adams as well as a line of ten words. The signature and writing are consistent considering slant, flow, letter size, pen pressure, and other characteristics that are typical HISTORY: The front of the document pertains to a legal action involving a suit brought by Benjamin Tufts, of Medford, against William Davis for the non-payment of a balance of 45 pounds due for 64,200 bricks delivered by the said Tufts. Signed on the verso (seen above) by John Adams as the plaintiff s attorney and also by the Sheriff of Suffolk County, S. Greenleaf. Interestingly, Tufts University was later founded in 1852 by the descendants of this bricklayer.

DESCRIPTION: Superlative hand-addressed free frank as president in 1801, 5 x 3.25, addressed by Jefferson to Genl Samuel Smith, Baltimore, and beautifully franked and hand signed in the upper left, free Th: Jefferson. The signature and writing are consistent considering slant, flow, letter size, pen pressure, and other characteristics that are typical HISTORY: Samuel Smith was a distinguished soldier and politician who joined the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, and later commanded the defenses during the Battle of Baltimore and Ford McHenry in the War of Smith received this from President Jefferson while serving in the House of Representatives, where he had in fact negotiated Jefferson s appointment to the presidency just a year earlier in the hotly disputed election of 1800, after the Electoral College vote had resulted in a tie between Jefferson and Aaron Burr.

DESCRIPTION: 4 x 2.5 vellum slip clipped from a larger document, hand signed in fountain by James Madison as president, May 18, HISTORY: The full document pertained to a land grant whereas President Madison grants William Pullen, a Lieutenant for three years, to the United States, in the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment a certain tract of land containing Two hundred acres, situate between the Little Miami and Sciota rivers, north west of the river Ohio.
6 ITEM: IMG-8128 This letter will serve as the certificate of authenticity for the James Monroe signature pictured above. DESCRIPTION: 5.5 x 3 free frank as Secretary of State in 1816, just a few months before becoming the president, hand signed in fountain pen, upper right, Jas. Monroe. HISTORY: A free-frank was a mark applied by means of a hand-stamp to official government mail to indicate the mailed item did not require postage. The privilege of free franking was granted to the president, members of congress, and appointed members of the president s cabinet. Requirement for free franking were that the mailed cover had to be hand signed by the official sender.

DESCRIPTION: 3.5 x 1.25 slip clipped from a free frank, hand signed in fountain pen, upper right, J.Q. Adams. HISTORY: A free-frank was a mark applied by means of a hand-stamp to official government mail to indicate the mailed item did not require postage. The privilege of free franking was granted to the president, members of congress, and appointed members of the president s cabinet. 8 ITEM: IMG-8132 This letter will serve as the certificate of authenticity for the Andrew Jackson signature pictured above. DESCRIPTION: 5 x 2.75 irregularly cut signature from an 1836 document, hand signed as president in fountain pen, Andrew Jackson. HISTORY: One of the president s mundane duties in the early days was to sign certain routine documents himself, in order to make them legal. Of course this continues for important documents today such as Congressional bills and foreign treaties. But early presidents signed everything from military commissions to land grants. By the early 1830 s, in Jackson s 2 nd term, the chore had finally gotten out of hand. In March 1833 to relieve this burden, Congress passed a law authorizing the president to appoint a special secretary to sign land documents, in essence, to legally forge the president s signature. This document is a rare example of an actual authentic signature by President Andrew Jackson from his 2 nd term in office, which today are highly desirable and exceedingly difficult to come by.

DESCRIPTION: Hand-addressed free frank as president, 5 x 3, addressed to Mrs J.B. Williams and beautifully franked and hand signed in the upper right, Free M VanBuren. 10 ITEM: IMG-8174 This letter will serve as the certificate of authenticity for the William Henry Harrison signature pictured above. DESCRIPTION: 5 x 3.25 clipped portion of a military receipt, hand signed Wm. H. Harrison, a. d. c. and hand written Greenville 29 th July 1795 The commissary will issue for Stephen Young a Delaware Indian one quart of whiskey. The signature and writing are consistent considering slant, flow, letter size, pen pressure, and other characteristics that are typical HISTORY: Harrison, who was then serving as General Mad Anthony Wayne s aide-de-camp, signed the Treaty of Greenville, ending the Northwest Indian War, on August 3, The provisions of the treaty, which involved ten Native America tribes, included the turning over of certain lands to the United States. Harrison s signature is one of the scarcest of all U.S. Presidents.

DESCRIPTION: 3 x 1.25 signature on an off-white slip attached to a larger slip, hand signed in fountain pen, Yr Obed Sevt James K. Polk as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. HISTORY: Polk served as the 17 th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, then the 9 th Governor of Tennessee before being elected as President in 1845.

DESCRIPTION: 3.25 x 1.75 portion of a military letter, hand dated by Taylor Oct/Nov 1843 and signed Z. Taylor, Btt Genl, U.S.A. Comdg. The signature and writing are consistent considering slant, flow, letter size, pen pressure, and other characteristics that are typical HISTORY: During his 40-year military career, Taylor became a hero during the Spanish-American War and his status as a national hero helped him to get elected as president.

DESCRIPTION: 4.75 x 2 conclusion of a clipped official 1846 document, hand signed by James Buchanan as secretary of state. HISTORY: Prior to becoming the President, Buchanan served as the U.S. Secretary of State under President James K. Polk from ).
17 ITEM: IMG-8133 This letter will serve as the certificate of authenticity for the Abraham Lincoln signature pictured above. DESCRIPTION: Abraham Lincoln, hand signed as President, full document, one page, 15 x 18, March 8, President Lincoln appoints Septimus Carncross Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers with the rank of Captain in the service of the United States. Signed at the conclusion by Lincoln and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. HISTORY: After immigrating to the US from England, Septimus Carncross was appointed First Lieutenant in the 10th New York Volunteers in October of He quickly climbed the ranks, earning the appointment of Aide-de-Camp to Major General John E. Wool in March of 1863, followed by this promotion to Assistant Adjutant General with the rank of Captain, and another from Lincoln the following month that elevated him to the rank of Major. He served on the staff of General Lorenzo Thomas, recruiting and organizing regiments of African-American troops, and remained in the service until the war s end.

DESCRIPTION: 3 x 1 ink signature Andrew Johnson of Tennessee, hand signed as U.S. Senator on an off-white lined slip. HISTORY: Prior to becoming the President, Johnson served as United States Senator from Tennessee in 1875, then the Vice President under Lincoln, becoming President upon Lincoln s assassination.

Garfield took office on March 4, 1881 and served until his assassination at the hand of Charles J. Guiteau on Sept. 19, 1881.
