Circular Economy Products Design/ Manufacture Use End Of Life Provides efficient and sustainable resource management. Bioenergy Australia Conference

Linear Economy Extract Produce Consume Discard Not sustainable. Practice must be questioned. Bioenergy Australia Conference

AnaeCo Ltd. Australian owned Perth based company. Waste Technology Provider and Designer of Advanced Resource Recovery and Recycling Systems. Inventor, Owner & Developer of the AnaeCo System. The AnaeCo System is Alternative Waste Treatment solution for the global Municipal Solid Waste market. Vision: Provide Environmentally Sustainable treatment for Municipal Solid Waste. Bioenergy Australia Conference

AnaeCo System & the Waste Hierarchy Avoidance Resource Recovery Reuse Recycling & Reprocessing Energy Recovery Divert MSW from Landfill Maximise Recycling Produce Organic Fertiliser Disposal Generate Renewable Energy AnaeCo System strives to recover maximum value from MSW Bioenergy Australia Conference

The AnaeCo System 14 years of research and development. $120M of investment. 60,000 tpa plant at the Western Metropolitan Regional Council JFR McGeough Resource Recovery Facility. 14 granted and pending patents. Retrofitted to existing waste transfer stations and integrate into existing waste collection routines and infrastructure. Small foot print. Traditional composting plant: approximately 20,000m 2 compared to 4,000m 2 for an AnaeCo System. AnaeCo AWT can be situated in urban locations close to the source of the waste to minimise the environmental impact, and cost of waste transportation. Bioenergy Australia Conference

WMRC JFR McGough Resource Recovery MRF Existing Waste Transfer Station BCF OMS Culture Storage Power Generation Bioenergy Australia Conference

The AnaeCo System Designed for mixed MSW. Physical contaminants in the waste stream are removed as soon after collection as possible. Initial waste processing is rapid and takes only about 20 minutes, which minimises the potential for odour release. During the materials recovery process, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, recyclable plastics, glass and a grit fraction are removed. Diverts an estimated 75 to 90% of the incoming MSW, and about 95% of the organic material, from land fill. Can be applied to source separated wastes. Bioenergy Australia Conference

AnaeCo System: Glass & Grit Removal Bioenergy Australia Conference

AnaeCo System: Glass & Grit Removal Incoming Waste > 2mm (140g) < 2mm (40g) Treated Waste 2mm (0.5g) < 2mm (2g) Greater than 98% removal of Glass & Grit. Bioenergy Australia Conference

Initial Biological Ramp-Up Batches MSW Proceesed (t) Batch Number MSW Processed Methane Yield Energy Production Maximum Specific Methane Yield (m 3 /t OFMSW/day) Daily Electrical Energy Requirement (%) Tonnages were provided for biological growth. Specific methane yield indicates strong biological growth. Electrical energy yield approaching plant requirements. Bioenergy Australia Conference

Anaerobic Digestion Overview Organic Waste (Proteins; Carbohydrates; Lipids) Amino Acids; Sugars; Alcohols; Long Chain Fatty Acids Short Chain Fatty Acids Acetate Hydrolytic Bacteria Acid Forming Bacteria Acetogenic Bacteria Methanogenic Bacteria Methane; Carbon Dioxide Bioenergy Australia Conference

Anaerobic Digestion Overview Organic Waste (Proteins; Carbohydrates; Lipids) Hydrolytic Bacteria Amino Acids; Sugars; Alcohols; Long Chain Fatty Acids Acid Forming Bacteria Propionate; Butyrate Acetate Acetogenic Bacteria Methanogenic Bacteria Methane; Carbon Dioxide Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA) Bioenergy Australia Conference

Anaerobic Digestion Overview Organic Waste Hydrolytic Bacteria Acid Forming Bacteria Organic Acids Methane Producing Bacteria Methane; Carbon Dioxide Bioenergy Australia Conference

Anaerobic Digestion Overview Organic Waste Hydrolytic Bacteria Acid Forming Bacteria Organic Acids Methane Producing Bacteria Methane; Carbon Dioxide Stable operation of thermophilic anaerobic digestion requires: Enough buffer to stablize ph Large numbers of methane producing bacteria Bioenergy Australia Conference

Process Stability Concentration (mg/l) ph Elapsed Time (days) Acetate Propionate Butyrate ph Acidification occurred at the onset of anaerobic phase. Process was stable without additional buffering required. VFA exhaustion occurred prior to end of digestion phase. 6.0 Bioenergy Australia Conference

Methane Production Rate Concentration (mg/l) Elapsed Time (days) CH 4 Production (m 3 /m 3 /d) Acetate Propionate Butyrate CH4 Maximum methane production occurred concurrently with maximum VFA removal. Low CH 4 production rate indicated material stability. Bioenergy Australia Conference

Conclusions The AnaeCo System is: A natural, rapid treatment process for the global MSW market. Designed to minimise the environmental impact of MSW treatment. Focused on being a part of a circular economy. Designed to maximise the value from MSW (recyclables, organic fertiliser and renewable energy). Biological Ramp-Up is progressing well. and... is Finally a Reality. Bioenergy Australia Conference
