1 KENTUCKY BLUEGRASSES BlueChip Plus Kentucky Bluegrass: BlueChip Plus has good cold-hardiness and performs strongly in the cool-arid region. BlueChip Plus provides early spring greening during March and April well into November. No improvements have been bred or genetically engineered to the cultivar. This cool-season, perennial, rhizomatous finetextured grass was first adapted to the Midwest then worked its way into the Rocky Mountains as a pasture grass. Common Kentucky bluegrass is used in pasture and lawn mixtures but is not resistant to any Kentucky bluegrass diseases. Common Kentucky bluegrass is used to over-seed older, established lawn areas. Common has the ability to blend well with other older varieties of grasses but has a stemmy appearance. Kentucky bluegrass is found growing as high as 10,000 feet which makes it an excellent grass for mountain meadows, soil stabilization and general erosion control. Common Kentucky bluegrass shows some drought tolerance. by going dormant very quickly when water is withheld and become green again when moisture returns and the temperatures are cooler. 2 KENTUCKY BLUEGRASSES Geronimo Kentucky Bluegrass Geronimo is a medium dark green Kentucky bluegrass that has good seedling vigor, fast establishment, and excellent wear tolerance. Its aggressive rhizomes and good tillering ability allows for rapid filling of bare areas. In addition, Geronimo has excellent spring green-up and density. It has shown good resistance to leafspot and yellow rust. Geronimo is widely adapted throughout the cool humid regions of North America. 3 FINE FESCUES Chewings Fescue VNS Chewings fescue is an aggressive, bunch-type fine fescue that can overtake other grasses - a bad quality if you want to preserve these but good if you want to crowd out weeds. Because of its high shade tolerance, it is sometimes used to overseed shady lawns, often in mixtures with perennial ryegrass. Chewings fescue is best adapted to cooler areas in the northern United States. It s well adapted to the sandy, often infertile soils. Chewings has a more upright growth habit than creeping red fescues, yet still retaining the fine texture. Chewings Fescues known to be among the most shade and drought tolerant of the cool season grasses. It displays some drought tolerance. The leaves are bright green with a reddish lower sheath. As a general rule do not hold up to heavy foot traffic but will hold up to normal lawn wear. It can be grown in sun and is capable of rapid leaf development even when grown in moving shade and does very well when seeded into a thinning lawn. Creeping Red Fescue grows particularly well at high altitudes because of its cold tolerance and is found in many mixtures recommended for high altitude. 4 FINE FESCUES Pennlawn Creeping Red Fescue Pennlawn is one of the top performing creeping red fescues because of its rhizome growth that quickly fills in bare areas thereby reducing soil erosion and prevent weed invasion. Pennlawn is tolerant of close mowing and withstands foot traffic better than the common varieties. Pennlawn Creeping Red Fescue can be used on roadsides or hills for erosion control. Pennlawn Creeping Red Fescue contains endophytes that discourage leaf and crown-feeding insects. 5 FINE FESCUES Sheep Fescue VNS Sheep Fescue is a low-growing, drought tolerant, perennial, cool-season, bunch grass that grows in small clumps. Sheep Fescue will grow in sun or moving shade. It is very hardy and withstands temperature extremes of very cold to hot. It will not tolerate humidity. After establishment Sheep Fescue will not tolerate areas that are constantly moist or areas with alkaline soils and prefers a soil ph of 5.5 to 7.0. Sheep Fescue is used for reclamation and soil stabilization on hills, roadsides, road cuts, fills, pipelines and open forest areas. Sheep Fescue requires as little as 12 inches of annual precipitation after it is established. Its natural low-growth (6 to 12 inches tall) and slow-growth habits make it an ideal candidate for alternative clumpy turf or for an area designated for low maintenance. Sheep Fescue is very dark-green and fine bladed. It will grow on almost any soil type succeeding on sandy or gravely sites. It requires very little fertilizer. Sheep Fescue is not susceptible to insect infestation because of the endophyte content in the grass seed. 6 TALL FESCUES TURF-TYPE Chipper has excellent turf density, a very dark green genetic color, a very fine leaf texture, and excellent disease resistance. Chipper had one of the best ratings for resistance to Brown Patch in the latest NTEP. This low maintenance turfgrass also exhibited excellent wearability in NTEP s Traffic Stress trials. Chipper is well adapted to a wide range of climatic conditions including full sun, partial shade, heat, drought and high humidity. A mow height of 2 to 4 inches should be maintained. Southwest Native Mix is completely drought tolerant once established. It is totally resistant to insects and diseases. This mixture requires full sun. Seed should be sown April through June on clean soil that is weed free and devoid of cool-season grasses. Later sowings will not produce expected results. Cultivate the new seed bed 4 to 6 inches deep adding peat moss or compost and starter fertilizer. Sow the seed 1/8 to ¼ inches deep, cover with soil and lightly tamp seed bed. Keep the area evenly moist throughout the germination period. Native grasses can be slow to establish and weeds should be removed by hand. Weed killers will discolor warm-season grasses and should not be applied.
