2 A Passion for Change MISSION: To Invest in the power of women and the dreams of girls We invest in the strength of women and the dreams of girls. The Canadian Women s Foundation raises money to end violence against women, move women out of poverty and build strong resilient girls through funding, researching and promoting best practices. We are a leading voice for women in Canada. VISION: Invest in Women and girls. Change Everything Canada's only national foundation for women and girls Canada s true potential = when women and girls can reach theirs Women and girls will be empowered to live without limits: to become economically independent, to be free from violence and to be full contributors to society. This will result in a safer, stronger and more prosperous society for all of us.
3 Approach To Build a community of women and men who are working together to stop violence against women, end poverty and empower girls. Focus on Women and Girls Focus on women and girls because of the ripple effect. Research shows when you improve women s equality, it improves economic and social conditions for everyone. Address the Greatest Needs We target our support to women and girls who need it most. Our priority is to help women and girls who face the highest risks, such as those with a disability and those who live in urban and rural communities with the fewest services, such as remote northern communities.

7 What we are learning.challenges The issues of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation are very complex Sex trafficking is intricately linked to prostitution Legislative responses to prostitution are fraught with contested perspectives in continual fluctuation Country (and city) contexts vary enormously Direct policy transfer is not necessarily easy Trafficking is fluid and adaptable in reaction to legislation and enforcement 7
8 What we are learning challenges Best business practices to ensure not providing opportunities for traffickers Both trafficking and sexual exploitation are very difficult to track, and data collection is generally limited Evaluation of the impacts of legislative changes on trafficking for sexual exploitation is quite limited Ease and confidentiality of internet driving growth 8
9 Voices of Experiential Women Women monitored, tracked, and tattooed to prevent escape - significant debt bondage/exit fees The sex-industry is becoming invisible as it moves from the street to indoors increases risks Girls between particularly vulnerable because of inconsistent provincial child welfare policies Victims do not reach out because of fears related to deportation or apprehension by child welfare agencies Survivor led groups provide unique supports Rebuilding lives must include interconnected services, education, skills training and supports to employment 9
10 Trauma and Inspiration Inspiration: The innocence, wisdom, and resilience of experiential women and girls and their ability against all odds, to rebuild their lives The courage and leadership of Aboriginal women - outreach programs, healing, grandmother s councils, the Missing and Murdered Women s Inquiry The remarkable strength of internationally trafficked women, and immigrant/refugee organizations, who despite barriers are delivering services, creating awareness & advocating for change The commitment of the women s sector to this issue Canadian Women s Foundation commitment to make human trafficking a key priority in its violence prevention work 10
