Dear Prospective Volunteer Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Sexual Assault Centre London (SACL). This information package will give you more details about becoming a volunteer at SACL, especially about the 24-hour crisis and support telephone line. Please consider it carefully before making your decision. Volunteering with SACL does require a commitment of 32 hours of training. The dates for the next training session will be sent to applicants once they are set. Prior to the start of training all applicants will be required to come in and meet with our Volunteer Coordinator for a pretraining interview. Please complete the Prospective Volunteer Information Form and to Leanne at or drop off, fax or mail to our office. We are looking forward to hearing from you soon! Leanne Vickers Volunteer & Crisis Line Program Coordinator

Sexual Assault Centre London has been part of the London community since Over the last many years the Centre has developed into a community leader in the fight to eliminate sexual violence against women and creating safe communities for all. Our Vision Our World Without Sexual Violence Our Mission We create safe spaces for survivors of sexual violence to break their silence. We listen. We bear witness. We facilitate healing. We celebrate resiliency and courage; We educate, We advocate We agitate; To create social change. Our Values Grounded in our feminist roots, we value: Justice, Equality, Fairness, Inquiry, Innovation, Interconnection, Inclusion, Honesty, Respect, Compassion SACL believes that trained volunteers form the foundation of our organization and play a vital role in the delivery of services. Who We Serve SACL provides individual and group counselling for women 16 years and older who have experienced any form of sexual violence. This may include: sexual assault, rape, childhood sexual assault/abuse, incest, sexual harassment and ritualized abuse. We also provide services, via the 24-hours crisis and support line, both women and men survivors, family, friends, and partners/spouses of women/men who have been sexually assaulted.

Volunteer Opportunities Include: 24-hour crisis & support line community outreach events accompaniments public education presentations Office support/ reception coverage fundraising child minding committees and board of directors Requirements: years of age or older. 2. Willing to get a current police check before completing training. 3. Act within the spirit of SACL s Vision/Mission/Principles. 4. Adhere to SACL s policies and procedures. 5. Maintain confidentiality as outlined in SACL s Confidentiality Policy. 6. Commit to the time requirements, including training. 7. Although prospective volunteers will complete an initial screening interview, training is an on-going screening process. Expectations/Information: 1. Sexual Assault Centre London accepts all individuals as volunteers. Anyone who is interested is eligible to apply for a position. 2. We ask that you make a commitment to being a volunteer in the program for at least one year. 3. Volunteering on the crisis and support line, we ask that you work 3 shifts each month. You sign up for your shifts according to your availability. 4. Workers will attend monthly meetings to share information, to get support, to participate in on-going training and to participate in decision-making about the program s operation. 5. Crisis and Support line volunteers take calls from their homes. Our answering service answers the phone and asks the caller if they wish to leave their name and phone

number. If callers are comfortable with that, the answering service will phone the volunteer at home and pass along the information. If the caller wishes to remain anonymous, the answering service will put them on hold, phone the volunteer and patch the two parties together. When phoning a caller back, workers will use call blocking (*67) to maintain confidentiality of their phone numbers. Each worker is responsible for ensuring call block is available on their phone line. 6. Providing accompaniments is also part of our service. At times, callers request accompaniments in urgent situations to Regional Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Treatment Centre and/or to the police station as well as other accompaniments that are coordinated in advance. This could include accompanying someone to court. 7. Workers will provide emotional support, information and advocacy to adult survivors of sexual assault or child sexual abuse. We also provide phone support to male survivors and the support persons of survivors. 8. You will maintain statistics on appropriate forms and keep them safe and confidential until they are handed over to the Volunteer Coordinator. 9. If you are unable to cover a shift you have signed up for, it is your responsibility to find a volunteer to take the shift for you and to inform the Volunteer Coordinator of the change. 10. Even though you are taking calls by yourself from home, you are not alone. Other volunteers, backup, and staff are available for your support. If you have concerns regarding the work, the Volunteer Coordinator is available to meet with you. During training, prospective volunteer crisis/support workers will be given a volunteer manual that provides more information about policies and procedures.

Training includes: - gender-based, feminist analysis of violence against women - anti-racism/anti-oppression education - crisis/support skills development - dynamics of and emotional impacts of adult & childhood sexual assault - medical and legal processes - working with suicidal callers - reporting to a child welfare agency - roles and responsibilities of a volunteer crisis/support worker - policies and procedures - role playing - how to identify and support those experiencing human trafficking If You Are a Survivor of Violence The issue of sexual violence is a painful one no matter what our personal experience is with it. We have learned from volunteers who are survivors that it is important to have a clear understanding of how the violence has impacted one s life. Working on the crisis/support telephone line can bring old memories forward and stir up many feelings. We ask, therefore, that volunteers who are survivors be at a place in their healing journey where they can cope with these memories and feelings. Diversity As part of SACL s work against racism and other oppressions, we strive to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. Volunteers who are, First Nations, Métis, immigrant, refugee, LGBTQQ, from the trans community, racialized communities, with disabilities, are encouraged to apply.
