2 Key Person Assessment Officer Class Teacher Clinical Psychologist Communication Support Worker (CSW) Connexions Personal Adviser (PA) Dietician Doctor (GP) Educational Psychologist (EP) Definition of their role An officer in the Directorate for Children, Young People and Families who deals with any queries related to a statement of Special Educational Needs. The teacher with responsibility for a class of children. A psychologist who works in a health setting to promote a child s satisfactory development. A support assistant who works alongside teachers and others to provide sign language support for young deaf children. PAs with young people aged (and up to the age of 25 if they have learning difficulties or disabilities). PAs can provide young people with information, advice, guidance and practical support on any issues that may affect them. This could be making decisions about courses/training placements and careers, part-time jobs, accessing personal development opportunities or dealing with relationships. Is a health professional who can advise on diet-related matters. They can also help with swallowing and feeding difficulties. A local medical practitioner. A qualified psychologist who has relevant experience of working with children and a specialist post-graduate qualification. EPs promote child development and learning by working with school staff, parents, groups of children or individuals. Education Welfare The role of the Education Welfare Officer is to Officer (EWO) help pupils get the most out of school. They support children, parents and schools in dealing with a range of attendance and welfare concerns. 2

4 Key Person Head Teacher Independent Parental Supporter (IPS) Intervener Definition of their role The teacher with overall responsibility for running a school. A person chosen by you or the Parent Partnership Service to give you information and support with your child s Special Educational Needs. Is a specialist support assistant who works with children with multi-sensory impairment. They help children understand, communicate and access the environment. Learning Disability A specialist nurse who works with children Nurse and adults with a learning disability and with their families. They can help you find services for your child and also support you as a parent. Learning Support (Teaching) Assistant Non-teaching support staff working in a school to provide additional help to individuals or groups of children. Named Officer An officer in the Directorate for Children, Young (Casework Officer) People and Families who liaises with parents over all the arrangements relating to statutory assessment and the making of a statement. Occupational Therapist (OT) Paediatrician A health professional who works with children to enable them to be as independent as possible. A doctor who specialises in the treatment of children. Parent Partnership Someone who works for the Parent Partnership Officer Service. This service provides support and information to parents and carers of children with special educational needs. Physiotherapist A health professional who works with children to enable them to be as mobile as possible. 4

6 Key Person School Nurse Social Worker Definition of their role A school nurse is a medical nurse, based in a school, who provides support for children s medical needs. A qualified professional who is responsible for assisting and supporting families and individuals with specific social problems. Social Worker from A specialist social worker who works with children the Children s with severe and complex disabilities and Disability Service their families. Special Educational A teacher in a school who co-ordinates the provision Needs Co-ordinator for children with special educational needs. (SENCO) Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) A health professional who works to help children with speech, language and communication difficulties and may advise on eating and drinking. Teacher from the A member of the team who provide support and Physical Disability advice to schools for children who have physical Support Service disabilities. They are teachers who are based in (PDSS) the special schools for children with physical difficulties and who also provide an outreach service to mainstream schools in the county. Teacher from A member of a team who supports and advises Specialist Support schools in providing for children with a sensory Service (SSS) impairment, or an autism spectrum disorder. Teacher from the A member of a team who provides support and Special Educational advice to schools for children with general, Needs Support behavioural or specific learning difficulties.
