1 What is the Believe in Ohio Program? Overview of the Believe in Ohio Program Believe in Ohio is a program from The Ohio Academy of Science that helps prepare for the future and encourages them to become the and entrepreneurs Ohio will need to enhance and maintain its prosperity. The program was developed in collaboration with Entrepreneurial Engagement Ohio with the support of the Ohio Board of Regents and the 130 th Ohio General Assembly. The Believe in Ohio program is the only statewide Ohio student education program to integrate entrepreneurship and innovation as pathways to create future jobs. What are saying about Believe in Ohio What are saying about Believe in Ohio ANDY BRUENING Science Teacher at Strongsville HS This is it. This is the solution to standardized tests. This is what we need to have more of. This is experiential learning. This is kids finding their own way in Ohio. This is going to help Ohio. I became a science educator to help the Ohio science community and I think that this is the best thing I have seen in my ten years of teaching. ANDREA HARPEN Science Teacher at Blanchester HS I think that the Believe in Ohio program is a fantastic program. I think that it is dead on. I feel that this program more that anything else I ve done has really benefited my and really gets at the core of what we are targeting for as we are trying to improve science education.... I think it is so much better than testing, testing, testing. What are saying about Believe in Ohio What are saying about Believe in Ohio NANCY MILLER Science Teacher at Canton South HS All of my benefited. Some of my children who are the lowest excelling in class, excelled in this program. It gives them an opportunity to take what they know and build on it, rather than being chopped down for the things that they don t know. STEPHEN LEWIS, SR. Business Teacher at Upper Arlington HS It provides an opportunity for our to engage in business I think that it gives them a real good perspective of real world business preparation. 1
2 Why Believe in Ohio is Needed From the Perspective of our and Country US leadership in innovation & entrepreneurship is being challenged like never before. While developing entrepreneurial human talent is key, the US and Ohio are failing to develop its own citizen talent. Over the last ten years the proportion of US high school interested in science & engineering has dropped by 35%. The Challenge Our Country & The Next Generation Faces is Great The number of US startups with employees has declined dramatically. The level of Chinese innovation has rapidly passed the US Why Believe in Ohio is Needed From the Perspective of Today s Students According to Ohio Means Jobs, a majority of the "in-demand" jobs available in the state of Ohio currently are related. This is inclusive for those with an associates, bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees. Qualified employee candidates are not securing available jobs due to a lack of "soft skills" including the ability to communicate unique ideas during a job interview. Consider what today s will experience in the future 1. Technology is relentlessly transforming everything, therefore 2. Every product, service and aspect of life will change again and again during your lifetime, as a result 3. Every business and enterprise, and every job and career will in time either change and adapt, or go away, as a result 4. If every product, service and aspect of life will change and have to be re-invented, who will do that? Why not you? Our country and its future prosperity requires the next generation to become the and job creators of the future! What Believe in Ohio teaches on how to prepare for their future: 1. Commit yourself to being a life-long learner. 2. Come to terms with the reality that technology is literally changing everything. 3. Understand and embrace learning so that you can play a role in the future transformation of your world. 4. Learn to think and act entrepreneurially about everything be a continual force for improvement in whatever you choose to do. 5. Learn about the Innovation Economy of Ohio and become part of Ohio s next generation of and entrepreneurs. Threshold Question for Students? 2
3 What are saying about Believe in Ohio What are saying about Believe in Ohio JENNA ZUZOLO Student at Tippecanoe HS The Believe in Ohio program is a great opportunity for from all types of classes to really invest themselves into trying to solve a problem that deals with them personally in their life. I definitely think I benefited from this. It was an amazing experience and I learned so much. BRENDAN DAUGHERTY Student at Blanchester HS Science isn t just sitting in a classroom and listening to a teacher talk about chemicals and all of that. It s actually getting in there and doing the research and looking into what you a really passionate about. I know so many things that I didn t know before this. What are saying about Believe in Ohio KEENAN FRAYLICK Student at Tri-Village HS It makes me think that I am an adult and not a student anymore, like I m in the workforce and I m presenting my ideas to investors. It makes me feel like I m getting prepared for life in the long term. 9 Believe in Ohio s Believe in Ohio has established an Network to recruit models and mentors for Ohio s urban youth based on the Each One, Teach One concept. The network is part of Believe in Ohio s commitment to an All Hands on Deck Inclusive Competitiveness strategy to engage all Ohioans. Each One Teach One is an African-American Proverb This phrase originated in the United s during slavery when Africans were denied education, including learning to read. Many, if not most slaves were kept in a state of ignorance about anything beyond their immediate circumstances which were under control of owners, the law makers and the authorities. When a slave learned or was taught to read, it became his duty to teach someone else, spawning the phrase "Each One Teach One. The original author of the proverb is unknown. 11 More about what and parents are saying about Believe in Ohio More about what and parents are saying about Believe in Ohio DR. DEANNE NOWAK Science Teacher at Gilmour Academy I love the Believe in Ohio program. It s inspired our who are science minded to start thinking about business. To start thinking about taking what they know about science and turning it into a business. In addition to that, it has helped my colleagues to start thinking that way, because like me, they were never trained to think of themselves as entrepreneurs. ANGEL PEREZ Parent of student at Hudson I really, really enjoyed the overall concept of the program and the fact that it is targeted, but still fairly open. Whatever are interested in, it could fit within this program and they could explore it further. More about what and parents are saying about Believe in Ohio MELISSA NEMETH Parent of student at Strongsville It gets the out of the text books and into the real world, into the business world, into the thinking out of the box world and that s what corporations are looking for.
