13 Part-time distance learning The majority of the learning resources will be online. The programme will combine interactive distance learning, webinars, live learning and print to create an integrated learning programme, using the best of new media and technology. Ownership The programme is designed to encourage the student to take responsibility for his/her own learning. The emphasis of the MSc is on a self-directed learning approach. Type of Learning Webinar/e-learning/ recorded lectures Critical Reading/ Reflection & Assesments Residential No. of Hours % of Course 15% 28% 5% Residential The type of teaching will be distance online self-directed learning. In addition, activities on this programme will be supplemented by attendance at three residential courses to complete the hands-on portion of the course. Clinical Cases % Dissertation % Resources Students will have access to The University of Manchester s online library. Assessments take the form of short answer questions, structured essays, clinical case reports and treatment planning exercises. Clinical details and photographic evidence of cases treated in practice form the basis of case reports. 14

15 Webinar*/Recorded Lectures Each webinar or lecture is typically 1-2 hours long with assessments to be completed during the unit. Webinars (live-distance learning) and recorded lectures may be taken online. In all cases, the examination is required to complete the unit. Each lecture hour is assigned a one hour credit and its associated coursework and assessment is assigned a 0.5 hour credit. *A webinar is a type of web conference, with an online seminar. The direction of the presentation is primarily led by the presenter. However, audience participation is integral and indeed necessary for a more useful and interesting experience. A webinar is live and interactive with the ability to give receive and discuss information. A webinar is typically 1-2 hours long. Clinical Case Reports Photographic documentation and written descriptions of clinical cases will be submitted online in a standard pre-formatted template file for assessment purposes. The images will include before, after and significant steps in the treatment. Detailed guidelines for case presentation and photography will be provided. The appraisal of current research will be an important part of the course/programme. Required and suggested reading take the form of peer reviewed articles, chapters of textbooks or other published sources. Articles are accessed online via the Manchester Library. Each article is assigned a 1 credit value (equivalent to 1-3 hours). Students are required to obtain a copy of the following textbook - Berkovitz, B.K.B., Holland, R.G., and Moxam, B.J. (2009) Oral Anatomy, Histology and Embryology. 4th ed. Edinburgh, Mosby. A dissertation is a detailed piece of writing designed to further develop your knowledge and provides an opportunity to draw on research skills developed across the course. At a Masters level, the dissertation requires independent thinking and an ability to critique ones own work and that of others. A Dissertation Tutor will provide support in developing the dissertation and is responsible for assessing and monitoring students progress throughout the unit. Each case is examined anonymously by a minimum of 2 instructors (and a third, in case of disagreement), marked and returned to the participant with an evaluation and comments. 15

Where the first language is not English, produce a copy of either an IETLS certificate (score must be no less than 6.5, with no less than 6 in the written component) or a TOEFL certificate (score must be no less than 575 on the paper-based test, 230 on the computer-based test or 90 on the ibt test). 22 Requirements Content must be viewed at a screen resolution of 1024 x 768, or higher, using a 24-bit colour setting. You are required to have broadband or a high speed connection (DSL, Cable, T1 etc), a soundcard and headphones or speakers. You must use one of the following supported browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 the latest version of Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Safari for Mac. Additionally, you must have Adobe Flash Player 8 or above installed. Live net meetings will be conducted using Adobe Connect, you will need to have a microphone and webcam installed to participate. System Requirements Operating System Minimum: Windows Vista/MAC OS X v10.6 Recommended: Windows 7 or 8/ MAC OS X v10.6 or later Additionally, you must have Adobe Flash Player 8 or above installed. Processor Minimum: 1GHz Recommended: 2GHz RAM Minimum: 2GB Recommended: 4GB The following recommendations are based on what the course tutors use in their practices. Contact mike@thedigitaldentist. co.uk for more information and advice. If you are new to clinical photography you may wish to wait until photography has been discussed in Unit 2 before buying anything. This module will also help you to understand the required photographic views for case submission and what the examiners are looking for in each case type. Don t try to save money by getting something that is cheap, but hard to get the right photos on. These photos will be the only way that we can judge your work and if we cannot evaluate the work done due to poor quality photos, the case will not pass. We do not recommend any form of LED-based flash or other forms of continuous output light source these simply do not give out enough light to correctly expose the shot at the necessary depth of field. Blurred or underexposed photos cannot be evaluated. Do not try to use a zoom lens with a macro capability it will not produce suitable images for case submission, no matter what the person in the camera shop might tell you. You need a dedicated macro lens such as the ones listed. Camera System Camera setup must be capable of taking the required views Lens must be capable of producing 1:1 equivalent view Manual focusing capability essential Camera must be relatively simple to use so as to acquire views correctly focused and exposed Camera must support the taking of RAW format files. For convenience simultaneous capture of RAW & JPEG is essential. Lenses with Image Stabilisation or Vibration Reduction are not necessary for clinical photography. Canon Suitable models: Any current Canon DSLR model. EOS 5D - is a good camera, but probably overkill unless photography is a major hobby! Older models, no longer in production but also suitable: EOS 300D (Rebel) EOS 350D (Rebel XT) EOS 450D (Rebel XT) EOS 500D (Rebel XTi) EOS 40D EOS 30D EOS 20D Lenses Canon 100mm f 2.8 macro lens Sigma 105mm f 2.8 macro lens Tamron 90mm macro lens 22

23 Note that any 60m macro lens is not recommended. This is because proximity to the subject makes it very easy to overexpose the shot, especially with the entry level cameras it is designed to work with. Flashes Canon MR14 EX ring flash Sigma EM140 DG ring flash Dine ring and point flash Nissin MF18 ringflash In general we suggest Canon lens and ring flash or Sigma lens and ring flash as the respective flashes are designed to fit onto the lenses without the need for an additional adaptor. Dine ring and point flash will fit any of these lenses. The Canon MT24EX Macro twin light is a very good second flash to take more artistic photographs in the mouth, but for convenience a ring flash is better as the primary flash. Nikon s R1C1 macro flash (2 flash heads and hot shoe controller) is a more sophisticated flash unit, which also needs an additional flash bracket to use it to its full potential. Use of this unit is greatly enhanced by an additional flash bracket which allows easy repositioning of the flash elements. For case submission purposes this level of sophistication is not necessary, so we recommend the ring flash to all but the most experienced of users. Nikon Suitable models Any current Nikon Older models, no longer in production but also suitable: D80s D70 D200 D90 D5000 Lenses Micro-Nikkor 105mm AF-S VR lens Sigma 105mm macro lens Tamron 90mm macro Retractors See - dentalphotographyinpractice.com/ retractors.htm for recommended retractors Mirrors See - dentalphotographyinpractice.com/ mirrors.htm for recommended retractors com Articulator and Facebow It will be necessary to have access to a semi-adjustable articulator and facebow for the completion of the clinical cases. Advice will be given during the course. 23
