Iles Junior FIRST LEGO league 2014 Applications are due no later than Friday, September 19th. Do you like to build with legos? Are you interested in working with other students to explore where and how learning happens every day? If so, joining Junior FIRST LEGO League and participating in the Think Tank Challenge may be for you! This will be the fourth year that Junior FIRST LEGO League (Jr.FLL) is offered as an after school activity at Iles School. Last year 84 students in grades 1-3 participated in this program. Jr. FLL is an international organization that directs student s curiosity toward discovering the wonders of science and technology by introducing 6 to 9 year-olds to science concepts and helping them build teamwork skills. Jr.FLL was created through a partnership between FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and The LEGO Group. More information is available at: roboticsprograms/jr.fll The Iles Jr.FLL teams are organized and coached by parents of Iles students. Teams of up to 6 students will meet with their coaches for 1 1/2 hrs after school, every Thursday, to research a topic and build lego models that use gears, motors and simple machines. The Jr.FLL THINK TANK SM Challenge is designed to get kids to think about how people learn. The goal of the challenge is to get students to make connections between learning and their everyday lives. Each team will work as a group to build a lego model demonstrating what they have learned and will create a poster that they can present and share at a Jr. FLL Expo (April 12th, LLCC). Each Iles Jr. FLL team is coached by at least 2 volunteers. The number of teams we have will depend upon the number of parents who volunteer. If you are interested in helping coach a team, please contact us. If there are not enough coaches to allow all students to participate, a lottery will be used to determine which students can participate. Students with a parent/guardian who volunteers as a coach are guaranteed placement on that team. Informational meeting: There will be an informational meeting for parents and students in the Iles School library on Thursday, September 11th at 6:00 p.m. Fee: There is a $60 participation fee per student (payable to Iles School), which pays for team registration, materials, t-shirts and weekly snacks. Please note that this year snack will be provided and is included with your $60 fee. Need-based scholarships are available. All participants must fill an application, including students who participated last year. Applications are due Friday, September 19th. Forms and information about the application are available on the Iles Lego League Website. ( All Junior Lego League teams will meet from 3 to 4:30 on Thursdays.
Iles Jr. FIRST LEGO League Application Checklist Think Tank Applications are due no later than Friday, September 19th. Students must fill out an application form, sign the student agreement and fill out a t- shirt form. The parent/guardian agreement must be returned with the photo waiver form and the $60 fee must be submitted with the application. Application materials should be submitted to the office. Applications are due by Friday, September 19th. Please make sure a valid address is included on the application as we will contact families by . If you do not receive an confirmation that your student s application materials have been received within one week of turning it in to the school, please contact Angelica Salazar. If you have any questions, text/call Angelica Salazar at or ansaga.vi@gmail.com Student name: Date: Required for student participation Iles Jr. FIRST LEGO League Application Think Tank Iles Junior FIRST LEGO League Parent/Guardian Agreement Important Information and Participant T-Shirt Size: Photo release form Registration Fee ($60. Make check payable to Iles School) FIRST Consent and Release Agreement form (for student) Required for coach participation. Teams will meet on Thursdays from 3 to 4:30, starting in early October. 3 Iles Jr. FIRST LEGO League Application Think Tank To be filled out by the student and turned in to the Iles School office by Friday, September 19th. Your first and last name: The name, phone number and of your parents or guardians: Who is your classroom teacher: 1) Why are you interested in joining Junior FIRST Lego League? (2 or 3 sentences) Application Page 1 of 2
2) We learn something new everyday. Learning is not limited to the classroom. Here are some examples of places where you can learn something new: in the park, at the soccer field, in a museum or a dance studio. You can learn something new everywhere!!! A) What does the word learning mean to you?! B) Name a place where you can learn something.!! C) What can you learn in the place you chose?! D) Tell us one thing that you learned last week: Application page 2 of 2
Junior FIRST LEGO League Parent/Guardian Agreement 1) I understand that Junior FIRST LEGO League is a weekly commitment that begins in early October and runs until the team attends a Junior FIRST LEGO League Expo on April 12th, 2014 (unless the team is selected to attend the World Festival which takes place at the end of April). 2) I understand that a snack will be provided for my student. 3) I understand and have explained to my student that Junior FIRST Lego League is more than just playing with Legos. I understand that there is a research component and will assist my student as s/he works to learn about the research topic that the team chooses. 4) I understand that Junior FIRST LEGO League is an after school activity and that I will provide for my student to be picked up from the gym after the each meeting or I will arrange for my child to attend SCOPE after the meeting. 5) I understand that there is a $60 fee (payable to Iles School) per student participating in Junior FIRST Lego League. This fee will be used to purchase materials, t-shirts, weekly snack, and pay for registration fees. I understand that there are a limited number of need based scholarships available. 6) I understand that there are outings that the Junior FIRST Lego League team will go on as part of their research. I will either be able to provide transportation for my child or will be willing to give my child permission to get a ride with another parent on these trips. 7) I understand that the principle of Junior FIRST LEGO League is that the students do the work. While the coaches and mentors are there to help them learn, the coaches do not have all the answers. As a result, students will try to find the answers themselves. 8) I understand that parents are always encouraged to come and help or participate in any way that they can during meetings. 9) I understand that there may be more applicants for Jr. FIRST LEGO League than there is space on teams and understand that the number of positions available depends upon the number of parent volunteers that are willing to help coach. I realize that students of coaches will be guaranteed placement on a team and that there may be a lottery to determine which other students get to participate. Parent/Guardian Name (please print) Signature Phone Number
Coaching Form The Junior FIRST LEGO League program at Iles School only exists because of parent volunteers.
