3 Scope: Provide instruction on how to cross-compile and remotely debug a C/C++ application using Eclipse, on an i.mx platform. Anti-Scope: This is not a class on device driver, kernel or JTAG debugging. Similar interface & technique, but a completely different implementation. Pre-Requisites: The Audience should have some familiarity with Linux, LTIB and the i.mx processor family. 3

9 Launch VirtualBox and create new VM Linux, Ubuntu 64-bit, 2048M mem, 20GB dynamic drive Install Ubuntu with default options Install VirtualBox guest additions Install Freescale i.mx LTIB Install will be clean, but build requires prerequisite packages There are some known bugs when launching LTIB under Ubuntu Patches are available but can vary based on versions. 11 The boards are configured to boot from SD3 (SW6: ) LTIB generated u-boot, uimage, and rootfs are resident on the provided SD card. Direct network connection (via Ethernet) with the PC/Virtual Machine Board IP Virtual Machine (Optional) Serial connection via USB2SERIAL Adapter integrated onto the platform. 11

13 The default configuration for the LTIB build does not include the necessary packages for our goal, we will be adding them. Invoke the LTIB configure screen from a linux terminal $ cd /home/freescale/l3035_401/ltib $./ltib c 13

14 Expand Package list - - -> and add the following 14

15 Once configuration is done, you will be prompted to save. Select yes, the build process to include the newly added packages will start. This results in an updated target rootfs which is located under the /ltib/rootfs folder. IMPORTANT NOTE: To successfully compile & debug, your target rootfs and host rootfs must have the same set of libraries required by the application. The simplest way for doing that, it is exporting the target rootfs from the host to the target using NFS. When this is not possible, condition above must be verified. 15

20 Our project has been created, now we will edit some of the project properties. 20

21 In Tool Setting TAB Select Cross GCC Compiler -> Includes Cross G++ Compiler->Includes Add <path2>/ltib/rootfs/usr/ include/ <path2>/ltib/rootfs/usr/ src/linux/include 21

25 Add a new source file -> File -> New -> Source File Click Finish This new C file based on the default template will be added to your project. For the purpose of this session, sample code is available to copy/paste from /home/freescale/bugs.c 25

27 Click on the Hammer Icon to start the build If all goes well, you should see Build finished in the Console tab If not, errors will be reported in the Problems tab 27

29 From the Window pulldown menu, select Open Perspective. You may have to select Other to see the desired options. Select Remote System Explorer Click OK 29

32 Open a SSH shell to the target Right click menu from the remote connection Enter username and password root / root Right click Ssh Terminals & select Launch Terminal 32

33 Create a New Debug Configuration: Select Debug Icon Then Debug Configurations 33

34 Select the Main tab Select the application to debug Select the project and explicit path for the application on the target system I ve created /root/debug on the RFS for this purpose. 34

35 Select the Debugger tab and enter the explicit host path for the cross GDB /opt/freescale/usr/local/gcc glibc-2.13-linaro-multilib /fsl-linaro-toolchain/bin/arm-fsl-linux-gnueabi-gdb If you have a GDB command file, enter it here, otherwise leave blank. 35

36 Select Debugger Tab, Shared Libraries sub- Tab and enter library locations. <path>/ltib/ rootfs/lib/ <path>/ltib/ rootfs/usr/l ib/ Click Apply 36

37 Once Done Press Debug This will start the connection with the board, if required enter user/password (root/root). If successful Eclipse will switch to Debug View. 37

41 This training showed how to prepare a PC and set-up LTIB for supporting Remote Debugging with Eclipse. We saw how to configure Eclipse Kepler for Cross- Compiling an application and remotely debugging it. The Methodology here demonstrated can be used with any i.mx Device. 41
