2 Sara Austin York CAS board vice chair Sara Austin is a passionate champion for children and for good governance practices. She has senior leadership experience in the non-profit sector and expertise in international human rights law, with a focus on children s rights. Her efforts have led to policy and practical changes at both local and global levels. Employed as the director of the president s office of World Vision Canada, Ms. Austin has served as a member of the Global Advisory Council for the UN Study on Violence Against Children and on the boards of the Canadian Coalition on the Rights of the Child and the Christie Refugee Welcome Centre. She holds a master s degree in International Human Rights Law from the University of Oxford and has also completed the Institute of Corporate Directors Governance Essentials Program for Non-Profits. Brandy Elliot Brandy Elliot is a chartered accountant and lifelong volunteer. Working as a manager in the assurance services group at Grant Thornton LLP in Markham, she focuses on audits of not-for-profit and governmental organizations, and is active in the firm s CA exam education and support program. Ms. Elliot was a director of York CAS from 2008 to 2010 and sat on the finance committee. In 2009 she accepted the challenging role of finance committee chair and treasurer of the corporation and served on the governance and planning committee in She was re-elected to the board in 2012, and resumed the role of treasurer and chair of the finance committee. Bob Ebrahimzadeh Bob Ebrahimzadeh is a sole practitioner who specializes in employment and labour law, representing both employers and employees in unionized and non-unionized settings. He currently serves as general counsel to Educare Kindergarten & Day Care Centres, is a publicly appointed member (part-time) of the Council of the Ontario College of Pharmacists and is a member of the Board of Directors of Promoting Education & Community Health (PEACH). Before beginning his legal career, Mr. Ebrahimzadeh worked with the federal government and was a diplomat at Canada s embassies in the Philippines and People s Republic of China. He holds a bachelor of laws from the University of British Columbia.
3 Ascenzio Farina Ascenzio Farina is a chartered accountant and management consultant who was formerly the chief officer of operations and executive vice president of Discount Car & Truck Rentals Ltd. In 2010 he became a director for York CAS and sat on the fundraising/advocacy/ diversity committee, and is the past co-chair of the continuous quality improvement committee. His other volunteer work includes serving as board treasurer with the Inner City Family Health Team Clinic, and he is a member of Southlake Regional Health Centre Board s finance and property, and audit committees. Mr. Farina holds a MBA from the Ivey School of Business. Mark Foerster Mark Foerster joined Munich Re in September 2000, where he is responsible for all aspects of group operations and claims. He has worked in the insurance and financial industries and has taught Strategic Management on a part-time basis at the university level. Mr. Forester earned his MBA from the Ivey School of Business and has a certified financial planner designation. He has served on numerous charity boards, and was a previous chair of the United Way of York Region. Avanthi Goddard York CAS board chair Avanthi Goddard brings more than 29 years of senior management experience to the role. Owner of a consulting practice for the past 17 years, Ms. Goddard has developed specialized skills and knowledge in the areas of organizational performance management, strategic improvement, risk management, quality management and governance. She is an accreditation surveyor with Accreditation Canada and CARF International. Over the past 20 years, Ms. Goddard has served on many not-for-profit boards at the executive level and has certificates from the Governance Centre of Excellence of the Ontario Hospital Association and the Rotman School of Management, Institute of Corporate Directors. She is also a board member of the Ontario Association of Children s Aids Society and sits on its governance advisory committee.
4 Barb Gray Barb Gray is a senior executive with extensive experience leading teams. She successfully led two different organizations through a merger and acquisition, and is now leading her organization s business transformation initiative based on Excellence Canada s framework. She is a member of the Human Resources Professional Association and is a mentor within the York Region chapter. Ms. Gray is passionate about helping non-profit organizations and is vice-president of the board of directors of Palcare Network, volunteers with Excellence Canada s Advisory committee, and has been highly involved on the York CAS s board of directors since her appointment in November of She also is an MBA candidate with Queens University. Jill Moore Jill Moore is a registered nurse at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket. With a strong commitment to professional excellence, quality and patient safety, Ms. Moore is currently the professional responsibility chair for the Ontario Nurses' Association and is a member of the inter-professional academic advisory, hospital-association, and organ donation committees. She joined the York CAS s board of directors in 2008 as a member of the continuous quality improvement committee and became a director in She is currently the corporate secretary and chair of the continuous quality improvement committee. In the community, Ms. Moore is an avid supporter of Anaphylaxis Canada and MedicAlert. Jennifer Shelton Jennifer Shelton is an experienced market strategy and intelligence professional. Her collaborative approach, focus on results, and commitment to continuous learning have made her a trusted advisor to senior executives at blue chip technology firms such as AOL, Microsoft, and Motorola Solutions. Outside of her role in the private sector, Ms. Shelton is co-chair of the parent council at Mackenzie Glen Public School in Maple. She is a member York CAS s board of director s executive committee and co-chair of its governance and planning committee. A member of the Institute of Corporate Directors, she has successfully completed its NFP Governance Essentials program. She holds master s degrees in business administration and education from the University of Toronto.
5 Karen Singh Karen Singh is the director of knowledge management at the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer. Having worked for more than 15 years in the public sector, she spent more than 10 years with Ontario s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in various roles and served as senior policy advisor to three deputy ministers. Her strong commitment to community service began as a high school student and continues today as a member of the York CAS s board. Ms. Singh earned her master of health sciences from the University of Toronto where she continues to teach health policy at the Institute for Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. Rod Staveley Rod Staveley is a dynamic executive who creates value and drives results in global organizations though the strategic alignment of market, business initiatives and team member engagement. He achieves measureable, significant business improvements by balancing exceptional team building and people development skills with exacting expectations for execution. Mr. Staveley is a values-based decision-maker who creates a collaborative, results-oriented culture, while building trust to revitalize underperforming businesses. Mr. Staveley was elected to the York CAS board of directors in September 2013 and is co-chair of the continuous quality improvement committee. Al Suleman Al Suleman is an engineer and current director of prevention and risk management with the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management. Participating in numerous committees at the national and provincial levels, he is proud of his role in introducing comprehensive fire safety enhancements in Ontario, including mandatory automatic fire sprinkler systems in care homes for children and seniors. Mr. Suleman received an Ovation Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2009 and a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in He has been a York CAS board member since 2010 and was re-elected in He serves on the governance and planning committee.
6 Darryl Wolk Darryl Wolk has an MBA from the University of Windsor and is the owner and president of Advocacy Consulting. As a strategist for Fair Share for Peel Task Force, he helped advocate for a population-based provincial funding model. Mr. Wolk sits on York CAS s board of directors and finance committee, and the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame events committee. He has served as first vice president of the board for Community Living Newmarket-Aurora District, past president of the Newmarket Rotary Club, and past member of the North Newmarket Lions Club. Mr. Wolk is also a political pundit, appearing on local and national television, and in a variety of news publications.
