1 Oracle Corporation Company: Oracle Corporation HQ Location: Redwood Shores, CA URL: Company Overview Oracle Corporation, an enterprise solutions company, develops, manufactures, markets, distributes, and services database and middleware software, applications software, and hardware systems worldwide. Annual Revenue US $34.6 billion Employees 110,000 Oracle Solution Components Oracle s SPARC SuperCluster T4-4 Servers Oracle s Exadata Storage Systems (Expansion Rack) Oracle Solaris 11 Oracle Database 11g Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) Oracle E-Business Suite Oracle Solaris Cluster Oracle Solaris Volume Manager Oracle Active Data Guard Oracle Enterprise Manager Key Facts Single instance ERP implementation, plan through completion in just 90 days 50 percent Oracle license savings, or more, with Oracle s hardware core multiplier OpEx and maintenance savings: greater than $250,000US over 3 years Oracle s Internal Mission-Critical ERP Application and GSI Database System Gets a Performance Boost on Oracle Server and Storage Platforms Measurable Value with Oracle Engineered Systems Oracle SPARC SuperCluster and Oracle Exadata Storage Systems Deployment of the Oracle SPARC SuperCluster for its mission-critical ERP and global single instance (GSI) database environment resulted in: Oracle Corporation eliminates IOPS bottleneck, accelerating quarter-end and year-end workloads of business-critical applications. Oracle is the market leader in providing the world s most complete, open, and integrated enterprise business technologies for customers in more than 145 countries across the globe. Since its acquisition of Sun Microsystems in 2010, Oracle has focused on systems-level engineering, combining best-of-breed database, applications, middleware, OS, servers, storage, and services to deliver highly integrated business solutions. Oracle s systems-level engineering of the full technology stack of Oracle-on-Oracle solutions from servers and storage all the way to enterprise business applications is accelerating real-world achieved performance and efficiency advantages that are changing the landscape of enterprise IT environments. Oracle on Oracle Oracle Corporation recently applied its Oracle Optimized Solutions methodology and Oracle engineered systems technologies to address performance and storage cost issues that were plaguing the corporation s internal implementation of Oracle E-Business Suite with a global single instance (GSI) of Oracle Database. Across two data centers, the system hardware configuration was replicated three times; one for each physically separate environment (Production, Disaster Recovery, and Development/Testing/QA). 1
2 Our EMC disk could not provide the IOPS required for our thirdquarter close. Our biggest risk was that we would not complete the cutover in time. But to our delight, we were able to cut over production just 3 months after receiving our first test SPARC SuperCluster." Ric Ginsberg, director, Product Development IT Business Application Services team (PDIT), Oracle Metrics Real-world performance results include: 7.5X faster queries 4x faster heavy workload processing One Touch monitoring platform Native integration go-live feature that enables the production environment to be brought online in 30 minutes Needing an Upgrade Oracle s internal IT organization was faced with a common problem that plagues nearly all IT organizations. Namely, the company s valuable data sets had grown from 27 TB to 43 TB over 18 months, and this growth was causing I/O bottlenecks for the company s mission-critical GSI database and business-critical ERP application. The Product Development IT Business Application Services team (PDIT) needed a better solution than the untenable path of action that lay before them, which was to perform a costly upgrade every 12 to 18 months. Each such upgrade would entail adding a new Oracle s SPARC Enterprise M9000 server and an EMC DMX 3000-M2 Fibre Channel storage array to the existing system. With the existing SAN-to-server interconnect architecture, adding more servers and storage was the only way to keep up with data growth. The Oracle internal IT organization tasked with addressing this need for rapid expansion is PDIT. PDIT is responsible for the deployment and support of the mission-critical GSI database and the middle-tier infrastructure that hosts Oracle s financial applications, 24/7 field service, supply chain management, sales, marketing, partner portals, human resources, and various other employee applications. "Basically, our EMC disk was no longer capable of executing the ERP workloads associated with quarter end close activities. Our biggest risk was that we would not complete the cutover to a new solution before our next close. But to our delight, we were able to implement SuperCluster just 8 weeks after receiving our first system, with a planned downtime of 180 minutes. Ric Ginsberg, director, Product Development IT Business Application Services team (PDIT), Oracle Making the Transition to an Optimized Infrastructure The decision was made to rip out and upgrade the entire mission-critical systems and storage infrastructure. It would be replaced with the state-of-the-art enterprise infrastructure architecture Oracle SPARC SuperCluster T4-4 systems and Oracle Exadata storage cells. The existing three SPARC Enterprise M9000 servers would be replaced by a single-rack SPARC SuperCluster T4-4 system while the data existing upon two EMC DMX 3000 storage systems would be migrated to the SPARC SuperCluster s two racks of Oracle Exadata storage cells. By taking advantage of the high performance, data compression, and stability offered by SPARC SuperCluster and Oracle Exadata storage cells, PDIT created an environment that was not only designed to perform well for its current Oracle E-Business Suite and Oracle Database workloads, but also would be able to handle the corporation s needs and future growth without costly upgrades. 2
3 Letting the Performance Results Speak for Themselves PDIT was able to achieve its performance goals and demonstrate clear value using engineered systems to run its mission-critical applications. Measured results for the GSI Oracle database and ERP workloads showed the following improvements: 7X faster service processing with 5X increased user availability 4X faster overall systems performance Clustered reliability and superior percent fail-over recovery protection With respect to some additional technical parameters, the system delivered dramatic performance improvements for database read operations and Oracle E-Business Suite query results: 2X faster without flash cache enabled 7.5X faster with flash cache enabled (reads) 2.5X faster log file sync wait times Approximately 4X faster database heavy task processing (ETL jobs, inbound interface load jobs, and DBA maintenance tasks) The performance capabilities of Oracle s engineered systems with self-service applications for Oracle s employees will continue to help corporate productivity. Achieving Operational Savings Another benefit is the operational savings in terms of the data center team s workload and bottom-line operational budget. The following operational savings stem from the efficiencies of the new systems: 4 to 1 reduction in needed data center floor space, utilities, and third-party licensing costs More than $200,000 total operational savings thus far In addition to quantifiable operational savings, PDIT also experienced a 4X reduction in personnel maintenance and test-assessment workloads, thus improving the quality of work-life balance for the data center s team. The management efficiencies were largely due to the use of Oracle Enterprise Manager, which helped streamline administration processes and ease maintenance through the use of unified patch updates for Oracle software and hardware components. Balancing the Same Mission-Critical Business Demands as Oracle Customers Achieved the required IT goals of: Ease of deployment and management Reliability, availability, scalability, and serviceability Like many of Oracle s customers, Oracle s own data center IT department is constantly balancing the need to rapidly scale the IT infrastructure while supporting core business applications and also integrating considerable data center assets from acquisitions. As a Fortune 100 company with more than $37 billion in annual revenue, Oracle s own data center needs are similar to those of its large customers who use Oracle products for their mission-critical database and business systems. These types of environments require extremely high service levels because daily business operations are dependent on the IT systems. Given the technical nature of the environment and the large capital IT expenditures that Oracle has made over the past 10 years, PDIT set the following goals for its enterprise systems: Zero targeted downtime Supportability Scalability to keep up with Oracle's rapid growth needs 3
4 Delivering Mission-Critical, Oracle Database Operations Oracle's E-business Suite applications rely upon a global single instance mission-critical database deployment. Throughout the lifespan of a database system, there are a number of reasons that data access can be interrupted. Designing for high availability and failover will help mitigate disruption from system failures. However, those unplanned outages represent only one category of outages. Planned outages for upgrades, maintenance, repairs, and system replacement also impact the ability to support continuous operations. Oracle s systems are designed to eliminate this second category of outages as well as the first by enabling these needs to be fulfilled during live operations without disrupting users or business operations. Non-Stop Database Operations Was the Goal Leveraging the live service and upgrade capabilities, expansion and growth not only can be accommodated in the Oracle solution but also can be performed during live operations without shutting down the database or rebooting the systems. This on-the-fly system scalability was a key factor for choosing a SPARC SuperCluster system as Oracle s GSI operations continue to project a 150 percent growth rate in data and more moderate growth in daily transactions. In addition, PDIT has implemented a disaster recovery environment in which the Oracle Database is replicated using Oracle Active Data Guard and Oracle Solaris Cluster to enable failover to the off-site location. This provides another layer to support for 24/7 access for the Oracle Database. Oracle targeted and achieved 95 percent reduction in RTO failover for major disaster and transfer of operations from Austin, Texas, to the offsite disaster recovery data center in Colorado. Why SPARC and Oracle Solaris There is a long history of Oracle Database implementations on Oracle s Sun Microsystems servers and storage and these are often among the world s most demanding, mission-critical environments. The design goals and resulting requirements for the global single instance Oracle E-Business Suite environment lead to the choice of Oracle s SPARC SuperCluster with the Oracle Solaris 11 operating system. Upgraded to Oracle Solaris 11, and Everything Just Works Moving from Oracle Solaris 10 to Oracle Solaris 11 was key to how quickly this ERP system implementation was performed. Often the challenges in upgrading mission-critical single instance database systems stem from the long cycles needed to test and validate every application dependent upon the core system. The binary compatibility guarantee between Oracle Solaris 10 and Oracle Solaris 11 enabled PDIT to avoid much of the application testing that is sometimes required for data center upgrades. "The feedback from the customers I've presented to is all were impressed by ONE, how quickly and relatively easily this migration went, and TWO, that we actually did it. This is a powerful symbol of Oracle's commitment to SPARC SuperCluster and Oracle Solaris." Chris Armes, vice president, Oracle Systems Revenue Product Engineering, Oracle Conclusion As Oracle's own data center environment shows, missioncritical systems are vital to the success of mission-critical enterprise applications. These systems must be highly available, and downtime must be minimized while cost effectively optimizing performance and employee productivity. The fact that Oracle has proven the scalability and reliability of its engineered systems with the company's own mission-critical applications is a demonstration of Oracle s commitment to deliver the most robust environment for mission-critical Oracle Database implementations. Oracle is the one place to turn for a complete database stack along with ongoing service and support one complete enterprise system, one vendor. 4
