Mat Fogelstrome and Mary Bartlett

1 Ref: Example Mat Fogelstrome and Mary Bartlett Background In order demonstrate the type of service that I offer I decided to conduct a search on a couple and produce a report on the information found. I searched through a list of marriages in Western Australia during 1870 (a randomly selected date) and picked a name unknown to me which stood out: Fogelstrome. The following information has been obtained through the use of online sources only. A more thorough search of other repositories (i.e. State Records Office or the State Library of Western Australia) may yield more detailed information. Information Found Mat Fogelstrome (b: unknown) and Mary Bartlett married in Perth on 26 January 1870 in the Roman Catholic Church. 1 Mary Bartlett (b: 1848 in County Clare, Ireland 2 ) was the daughter of Michael Bartlett and Mary Bartlett (nee Hennessey). 3 She was 22 at the time of her marriage. The incorrect spelling of Fogelstrome (should be Fogelstrom) in the marriage register and the incorrect spelling of Bartlett (recorded as Bartley) in the birth register made finding birth records a little more difficult. After realising these differences, it was ascertained that Mat and Mary had the following children: 1. Josephine Fogelstrom born in 1870 in Fremantle Gustav Adolf Fogelstrom born in 1874 in Roebourne. 5 The birth registrations also showed that Mat s full name was actually: Mathew Andrew Fogelstrom. His middle name, Andrew, was also sometimes recorded as Alexander. 2 Mr and Mrs Fogelstrom appear to have originally been based in Fremantle but moved to Roebourne sometime after the death of their daughter. It was in Roebourne in 1874 that their son, Gustav, was born. They unfortunately met with their second tragedy soon after with Gustav passing away aged only three months old. 7 Roebourne however was most likely their Registration District as newspaper articles indicate that they actually lived in Cossack. Throughout the next three years they were often recorded in shipping reports as travelling in and out of Fremantle and on occasion returned north with indigenous boys (the reason for this unknown but they may have been used by the Fogelstroms as workers). 8 Mathew Fogelstrom usually recorded his occupation as storekeeper but advertising from 1877 indicates he worked as a butcher. 9 7 WA Births, Deaths & Marriages; Registration Number: 8286; Registration Year: The Western Australian Times; 3 July 1874; Page 2; Shipping Intelligence; 9 The Herald; 22 September 1877; Page 2; Advertising;

3 He usually stayed clear of the law but in August of 1877 he was found guilty of smuggling tobacco and was fined 50 (see below). 4 Unfortunately Mathew Fogelstrom s story does not end happily. On 8 January 1879 he boarded the schooner Rosette bound for Port Walcott (near Cossack). An E. Foglestrom (incorrect spelling) was noted as a passenger. 13 The Rosette made it as far as the Fortescue River (south of Dampier) but a severe cyclone swept through the North West and on 24 January 1879 it was presumed that the schooner had foundered and all aboard were lost (see below). 5 With Mathew presumed dead, Mary applied through the Supreme Court for Letters of Administration for his Estate. She was his sole beneficiary. Advertisements were placed in the papers requesting those who had claims to come forward (see below) The Herald; 12 July 1879; Page 2; Advertising;

Mary Fogelstrom remained in Cossack and it was here (in the same year) that she married for a second time, this time to Albert Stock. 18 They had one daughter together, Christina Stock, born in Cossack in but she sadly died six days later. 20 Albert and Mary Stock appeared to have had no other children. They eventually moved south and lived for several years in Coogee with Albert working as a farmer. 21 On 4 April 1908 in Coogee, Albert Stock passed away at age 59. 7 Mary was once again widowed but this time did not remarry. She remained living at Roe Street in Coogee for several years before eventually moving to Fremantle. 24 It would seem she moved one more time. In Leederville, on 23 December 1923, Mary Stock (formerly Fogelstrom nee Bartlett) passed away at age She was buried alongside her husband, Albert, in Fremantle Cemetery. 24 Ancestry.com.
