Address: Office Number: Office Address: 66 Mint St, First Floor, San Francisco, CA Office Hours: By Appointment Course Description This course involves a careful examination of the various psychological disorders that comprise the polythetic system of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4 th Edition Text Revision). The biological, psychological, and social contexts in which the development, expression, and maintence of psychological disorders occur will be elucidated through readings, lectures, dicussions, and clinical case presentations. By contextualizing the contents of the DSM-IV TR students will learn to utilize it s multiaxial system to make accurate diagnoses that properly inform treatment. Parallel to the Biopsychosocial study of the DSM-IV TR will be a careful examination of character or personality formation and it s relationship to clinical diagnosis. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this course students will have achieved several learning objectives that include: 1. A solid grounding in the conceptual and theoretical underpinnings of diagnosis from a biological, psychological (i.e., psychoanalytic, cognitivebehavioral, family systems), and social (cultural and sociological) perspective. 2. An ability to accurately diagnose using the DSM-IV TR multiaxial system. 3. An ability to identify and consider the differential diagnoses. 4. A theoretical framework for understanding character and personality formation, and its relationship to DSM-IV TR diagnosis. Criteria for Evaluation - Class Participation. Students will be required to complete assigned readings (when reading the DSM-IV DO NOT feel like you need to read every word. It is impossible to take in all the data presented in the DSM in one reading. Just try to let the information wash over you and take in the key points) and come to class prepared to discuss the readings. The instructor and his colleagues will present
2 ongoing case presentations of their own clinical work to illustrate the material discussed in class. It is important that students utilize these presentations to develop ideas and ask questions. - Students will write a 5-page paper on a diagnostic category of interest to them (i.e., mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders). The paper should be double-spaced and include 4-6 references. At least 3 of these should be journal articles or books published within the last 5 years. - There will be both a Midterm and Final Exam designed to assess your acquisition of the material discussed in class. These exams will focus primarily on the structure, organization and classification system of the DSM-IV TR. Required Texts: American Psychiatric Association (2000). This is a time for the instructor to receive feedback on his or her efforts, and also a time for students to reflect upon their own. This conversation is to be facilitated by a student chosen by the class. The instructor is to leave the room (or be offline if the course is an online one) while the facilitator is selected.
