Wigglebottom Lessons Developed by Sandy Magnuson AGE GROUP: These lessons were designed for first and second grade students. ASCA Standards Area: Academic Development National Standard Academic Development B: Students will complete school with the academic preparation essential to choose from a wide range of substantial post-secondary options, including college. Students will apply study skills necessary for academic success at each level. Students will become self-directed and independent learners. ASCA Standards Area: Personal/Social Development National Standard Personal/Social Development A: Students will acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and others. Students will acquire effective communication skills. National Standard Personal/Social Development B: Students will make decisions, set goals, and take necessary action to achieve goals. Students will demonstrate a respect and appreciation for individual and cultural differences. Students will develop strategies for making good decisions. Listening skills featuring Howard B. Wigglebottom Lesson 1 Materials: Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen by Howard Binkow Accompanying CD Letter to parents Suggestions for introduction: Begin with age appropriate brain teasers and riddles that require focused listening and critical thinking. Teach and rehearse elements song on CD Structure procedures: Stand with arms width personal space. Listen to directions. How many voices should your teacher and I hear? We will hear sounds of you following the directions. Play CD Rehearsal: Clap your hands XXX Stomp your feet XXX Hop Wiggle from left to right (Keep feet on floor) Return to full listening position as song ends

Sometimes stories that aren t true were told or written to teach a lesson. What lessons might you draw from this story? What did you learn about listening from this story? Page 7 -- Page Page Page What do you think the other kids were thinking when Howard was bouncing around and not listening? When are other times when it is important to listen with both your eyes and ears? What do you think Howard's friend is thinking because she can't finish what she wants to say? How do you think she feels? Howard made some important decisions. What do you think the other students think now? If Howard were a student in your class, what could you do to help him? When is it hardest for you to sit quietly and listen? When is it easiest for you to sit quietly and listen? Application: Invite class members to identify sounds on the nature tape. Conclusion: I hope you will pay lots of attention this week and tell me about times when your whole class listens! (Distribute letters for parents.)

I have enjoyed presenting lessons based on Howard B. Wilgglebottom Learns to Listen in the first and second grade classrooms. At the beginning of the story Howard B. Wigglebottom was always in trouble at school because he just didn't listen. Ignoring teachers and friends led to unpleasant consequences. Finally Howard made up his mind to be the best listener he could. Everyone was surprised! He learned important lessons about how to listen, and we did too! 1. Sit quietly. How to be a Better Listener 2. Use both your eyes and your ears to help you listen 3. Please don't interrupt. Wait your turn. 4. Try your very best to understand the person speaking. 5. Ask questions if you don't understand. 6. Remember rules and directions. 7. Pay attention. That means to be alert and really know what is happening around you. You and your first or second grade child can read an animated version of the story and hear the Wiggle and Giggle song we enjoyed by visiting It's a privilege to work with the students at University Schools! Wigglebottom Listens to his Heart by Howard Binkow Accompanying CD Suggestions for introduction: Demonstrate the following dialogue with a puppet Puppet: I m sad today. Facilitator: What s happened? Puppet: Some children have been teasing other students. Facilitator: What about? Puppet: All kinds of things. They way they look, the way they talk, something they re wearing. I hate teasing. Facilitator: Maybe we'll talk about it this morning. We met someone last week. Who was that? (Howard B. Wigglebottom) What did Howard B. Wigglebottom learn? What did Howard B. Wigglebottom do to be a better listener? (remind class about listening positions) Sometimes we listen to other people... our teacher, our friends, our parents. Sometimes we need to listen to ourselves. Imagine that you have to make a decision. You can go to get ice cream with your grandparents or you can go get an Icee with your cousins. You can only do one. You can't do both. Let's practice listening to ourselves -- Think. I really want to go with my grandparents. I really want to go with my cousins. I don t want to hurt their feelings. What could you do so you could think about this, listen to yourself, and not be distracted? Close eyes Look down Look up Sit quietly and think Let's try another! I really want to squirm in my seat. I really don't want to do what the teacher has asked me to do. I need to listen to myself and make a good decision. Introduction to featured story: We already enjoyed one Howard B. Wigglebottom story. I have another today.

What lessons can we learn from this story? Sometimes kids and adults do things they don't want to do, or they stop doing things they like to do just because they want to fit in with people they know. What did Howard do? Howard talked with his grandpa, and he got some good advice. What did Grandpa say? Who is someone to whom you could talk if you have a problem like Howard had? Application: Facilitate listening activities with the following instructions given individually: Stand up Hold up 3 fingers Hold up your left arm Stand on your left foot. Put your right foot on the floor. Facilitate listening activities with three-stage sets of instructions such as: Turn around 1 time Bow Turn around the other way 1 time Closing activity: Wigglebottom song (CD) (Note: Howard B.
