Using Water - Saving Water 1. Fascinating Facts Aims: To give pupils key facts about saving water and introduce them to the links between water and the environment Materials: Worksheet 1 Method: This information acts as an introduction to the work on saving water Review the Water Cycle with the pupils and remind them that all water comes from the natural environment Hand out the Fascinating Facts Discuss where they think in the world people still have to collect water from the rivers or wells

Saving Water - Worksheet 1 Fascinating Facts In some parts of the world people do not live in houses with water. Many people have to walk to rivers or wells to get the water that they need. This may be a long way from their house. Water is a limited resource. All water comes from the natural environment. More water than ever is being used in our homes. It is important that we use water carefully. By saving water we save money and help protect the environment. If you save water in these ways you will help the environment: - take a shower instead of a bath - turn off the tap while you clean your teeth - use buckets of water instead of a hose to wash a car - use washing up water to water the garden

Using Water - Saving Water 2. Transporting water Aims: To experience carrying water across a distance To relate this experience to the reality of life for some people in the world Materials: Copy of Worksheet 2 at appropriate level Two buckets, a long tape measure and a piece of chalk for each pair Method: Pupils work in pairs Hand out worksheet and discuss the experiment with the pupils Pupils carry out the experiment and write up their results

Saving Water - Worksheet 2 Transporting water Whenever you want a drink of water all you have to do is turn on the tap. In some countries water has to be collected from rivers, ponds or wells and often carried over very long distances. Carrying water over long distances can make you feel very tired. Why not try it and see? How to find out: You will need: - a partner - two buckets - a long tape measure - piece of chalk 1. Fill up two buckets with water. 2. Choose a flat, straight part of the playground to work on. 3. Mark your start line with the chalk. With your partner, measure 10 metres from the start line and mark your finish line with the chalk. 4. Decide who will carry the water and who will measure the distance. 5. The water carrier should carry the buckets of water backwards and forwards between the start and finish lines until your arms get tired. Try not to spill any. The measurer will note down the number of times the distance is covered. 6. Change over and do it again. When you have finished find a useful way of using the water in the buckets. Write a short report of your results: Start like this: What you used What you did What happened What conclusions you came to Make a graph showing how far you and your partner carried the water and include it in your report.

Decide who will carry the water and who will measure the distance. 6. The water carrier should carry the water between the two lines as many times as they can until their arms get tired. Tr y not to spill any water. 7. The measurer should write down the number of times 10 metres is covered. 8. Change over and do it again. Try to answer these questions: 1. How far did you carry the water? 2. How far did your partner carry the water? 3. How much water did you spill?
