3 Simon Says: Ho Ho Ho!!! I wanted to share my festive fashion tips for you this Christmas. I recommend going to New Look as they have lots of nice Christmas jumpers. They are all about I hope these get you in the festive season!!! For anyone who likes a more American themed Christmas. I liked this jumper because it has Christmas bits and pieces on. If you feel like dressing up, New Look has this lovely Santa jumper. This is myself and Lyndsey s festive picks! We decided to go more traditional and I picked a reindeer and Lyndsey picked a Christmas tree. Lyndsey got hers from Asda, but in the men s section. I hope you enjoyed the article. 4 The Cruise & Thornton s The Cruise Saturday, 14th September turned out to be a day to remember. Members travelled to Windermere, by bus and car, for a cruise on the lake. The sun shone and the lake was spectacular. A few of the brave ones sat on the top deck, but others preferred the comfort of a warm lower deck. Picnic lunches, bar meals or even a liquid lunch were enjoyed by all, sitting around the lake in the warm autumn sun. A few later stragglers had Val and Jean worried, in case they missed the 3pm boat, but they all made it! A really good day, all for just a fiver! Thanks to everyone. Pauline Tiplady Our trip to Thornton's - Wednesday, 20th November 2013 We had a great time at Thornton's coffee shop at Gretna. Twenty seven members attended. It was a big hit with everyone. Four members of the shop did demonstrations on wrapping, making bows and we received some very good tips. The staff were excellent and great fun. To everyone s delight we were able to sample the chocolate and toffee. Yum yum! - all washed down with a cup of coffee or tea.. Gazer helped with the wrapping and making bows, which he absolutely loved. Jean Wight Page 4
5 Donations & News Picture: Christina Kirkpatrick Almost five thousand children from across the north of England attended the Junior Great North Run each year, many raising money for a variety of charities. Christina Kirkpatrick (daughter of our branch chairman) was one of 230 students from her school (QEGS) Penrith who took part. The children were able to take part in an exciting and highly motivating day, meeting a host of international athletes including Mo Farah, Paula Radcliffe, Denise Lewis and Jonathan Edwards. Christina completed the run (100th place) and Headway North Cumbria received sponsorship monies and a generous donation from Hough Halton & Soal, Solicitors totaling just over 600. Well done, Christina. Congratulations to Rosie, partner of our member Laurence Cherry, who completed the Three Great Swims event with the sponsorship money being donated to Headway North Cumbria. Huge admiration to her for taking part in this challenge and our thanks for the fantastic amount of which she raised. Page 5
6 Christmas Gift Idea! Create Your Own Xmas Gift Start with your favourite brand of Hot Chocolate first. Then go and gather your favourite toppings. Simply layer them in a jar or clear plastic bag. Add a lid or tie the bag. Cut out a circle from some scrapbook paper and punch a hole for the straw. Tie a tag with string and dipped wooden spoons in chocolate and toppings for a little extra goodness. Don t forget your personal hand written note! Page 6
7 Christmas Recipe Gingerbread Men Ingredients: 7oz Plain Flour 1/2 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda A Pinch of Salt 2 tsp Ground Ginger 3oz Soft Brown Sugar 3oz Butter 3 tbsp Golden Syrup Method: Preheat the oven to 150/170 C or 300 F or Gas Mark 3. Grease a baking tray. Put flour, bicarbonate and ginger into a bowl. Warm the sugar and syrup together in a pan and allow to cool a little. Then add all the dry ingredients, Mix well and knead lightly till if forms into a smooth dough. Roll out to 1/8 of an inch thick. Cut out with a gingerbread man cutter. I found they were better to handle when the mix had cooled a little as the heads dropped off (not good for the gingerbread man). Make the eyes and buttons with currants and the mouth with the round end of a spoon, to make him smile. Page 7
