5 Promotion Scopes In SmartCloud Control Desk, you can create authorized configuration items (CIs) from the actual CIs in your environment. This process is called promotion. Before you can promote actual CI data to authorized CIs, you specify how to transfer the data from the actual CI to the authorized CI by creating promotion scopes for top-level CIs that you want to manage. A promotion scope functions like a template that maps a set of actual CI classifications to a set of authorized CI classifications. When actual CIs are promoted to authorized CIs, authorized CIs are created based on classifications that are specified in the mapping. To facilitate creation of promotion scopes, SmartCloud Control Desk Version adds a Promotion Scopes application to the Administration module applications. Before version , promotion scopes were created in the Deployer's Workbench. Administrators who manage CIs can now choose to use the Promotion Scopes application from within the SmartCloud Control Desk user interface, or they can use the external Deployer's Workbench utility to create promotion scopes. This document explains how to create promotion scopes using the Promotion Scopes application in SmartCloud Control Desk. Introduction to Promotion Scopes Promotion scopes map actual CI classes to authorized CI classes and control the promotion of actual CI data to create authorized CIs. The promotion process starts with an actual CI and copies the actual CI data to create an authorized CI. For the authorized CI classes that you want to manage in your enterprise, you can create promotion scopes that specify how to promote the data. The Mapped Actual CI Classification field contains the classification of the starting actual CI. The CI Promotion Scope field contains the top-level classification for the authorized CI to which the data is copied. Do not confuse the top-level CI classification in promotion scopes with the top-level CIROOT classification. In a promotion scope, the top-level CI is a functional classification that designates a class of objects that you want to manage in your environment, for example application servers. These top-level classifications are defined by selecting the Top Level field in the Use With section of the Classifications tab, as shown in the following image. Copyright IBM Corp
6 In the Promotion Scopes application, you specify a top-level CI classification and a corresponding actual CI classification. Data from the actual CIs with this classification is promoted to authorized CIs when the promotion process is run. After you save the promotion scope, you can then map additional classifications for the promotion scope in the Mapping Classifications table, as shown in the following image. Because the promotion process must identify a unique CI class for the actual CI data, within a promotion scope, the actual CI classification can be mapped to only 2 SmartCloud Control Desk : Creating Promotion Scopes
7 one authorized CI classification. However, within a promotion scope, a CI classification can be mapped to more than one actual CI classification. Multiple promotion scopes can be created for a specific starting point, or top-level, actual CI classification as long as each of the promotion scopes has a different starting point, or top-level, CI classification. After a promotion scope is defined, it can be specified when you select the Create Authorized Configuration Item action in the Actual Configuration Items application to promote actual CI data to CIs. Commonly used promotion scopes are installed with the product. You can change them as needed for your environment. Deleting promotion scopes After you save a promotion scope record, you cannot change the values that are specified for the CI Promotion Scope and the Mapped Actual CI Classification. If the values are not correct, you can delete the record and create a new one to replace it. However, you can use the delete row feature to add and remove other mappings in the Mapping Classifications table. Promotion scopes and relationship rules The configuration management database (CMDB) maintains information about relationships between CIs. You can associate related configuration items to each other in the Configuration Items application. The formal definitions and accompanying rules for relationships are created in the Relationships application. A relationship rule specifies a CI relationship or dependency, such as INSTALLEDON, RUNSON, or AFFECTS. Each CI relationship has a source CI, a verb, and a target CI. For example, an application RUNSON an application server. In this example, the application CI is the source; the server is the target. The directionality of a relationship affects what is promoted. Discovery tools collect information about relationships between actual configuration items. Relationship rules are required if you want to create related CIs when you promote actual CI data. The following aspects of relationship rules are important for promotion: Source Classification The classification of the CI that is the source of the relationship. Target Classification The classification of the CI that is the target of the relationship. Relationship The identifier of the type of relationship (for example, RUNSON, VIRTUALIZES, and so on). IsTargetParent flag In a CI relationship, the source is the parent unless the IsTargetParent flag is set, in which case the target is the parent. Promotion scope mappings and CI relationship rules determine which related CIs are promoted when processing actual CI data and relationship rules. If you promote one top-level actual CI, you can directly or indirectly create several authorized CIs: a top-level CI and CIs that are related to it. Promotion evaluates Promotion Scopes 3
8 Creating promotion scopes related CIs only if the CI that is being processed is the parent CI in the relationship and the classification of the child is in the promotion scope. If authorized CIs are not created as expected, it is because of one of the following conditions: v relationship rules are missing v the IsTargetParent flag is not set as needed v the child classification is not in the promotion scope Because promotions traverse relationships, the Promotion Scopes application offers the ability to create relationship rules for CI classifications. When you select Create Relationship Rules, the application suggests rules that you might want to create for the CI classification in the promotion scope. The rules that are suggested are based on the existing relationship rules between the actual CI classification that is selected and other actual CI classifications in the promotion scope. The application does not suggest relationship rules that already exist for the CI classification or rules that would cause existing CI relationships to be invalid. You can choose whether to create the rules that are suggested. Validating promotion scopes A validation feature in the Promotion Scopes application performs the following tests: v v checks that each of the classification mappings has both an actual CI classification and a CI classification verifies that relationship rules exist such that CIs for each of the CI classifications can potentially be created when an actual CI is promoted using this promotion scope If CI classifications in the promotion scope are not valid, an error message is displayed. To validate a promotion scope, select the scope that you want to validate and then select Validate from the More Actions menu. In the Promotion Scopes application, create promotion scopes that map CI classifications to actual CI classifications. About this task Complete the following steps to create promotion scopes. Procedure 1. In the Promotion Scopes application, click New Promotion Scope. 2. In the Mapped Actual CI Classification, specify the actual CI classification from which to start the promotion. 3. In the CI Promotion Scope field, specify the top-level functional CI classification to which you want to map the actual CI data. 4. Save the promotion scope. 5. In the Mapped Classifications table, click New Row to specify more classification mappings for the promotion scope. 6. To view information about relationship rules for a mapping, expand the row, click View CI Relationship Rules, and select one of the following options: 4 SmartCloud Control Desk : Creating Promotion Scopes
9 v Select Rules To Child Classifications to view relationship rules between the current CI classification and child classifications. The resulting list displays classifications of CIs that can be created when promotion processes the relationships of actual CIs whose classification maps to the Parent Classification. v Select Rules From Parent Classifications to view relationship rules between parent classifications and the current CI classification. It shows how CIs with the Child Classification can get created. If the list is empty, CIs with the Child Classification cannot possibly be created with this promotion scope. The results include only relationship rules with other CI classifications in the promotion scope. Promotion Scopes 5
10 7. To create relationship rules for classifications in the mapping, complete the following steps: a. In the Mapped Classifications table, expand the mapping row for which you want to create relationship rules. b. In the Mapping Details section, click Create CI Relationship Rules. The Relationship Rules table lists rules that you might want to create for the CI Classification. The rules are based on the existing relationship rules between the Actual CI classification that is displayed and other Actual CI classifications in the promotion scope. The table does not list relationship rules that already exist for the CI Classification or rules that would cause existing CI relationships to be invalid. c. In the Relationship Rules table on the Create Relationship Rules For CI Classification window, select the rule or rules that you want to create. d. Click OK. 8. Save the promotion scope. 9. To validate the promotion scope, select Validate from the More Actions menu. If an error message is displayed to indicate that one or more CI classifications are unreachable, review the promotion scope to determine whether the CI 6 SmartCloud Control Desk : Creating Promotion Scopes

If the CI classifications are needed, create any relationship rules that are missing for the classes in the promotion scope or add any missing classifications to the scope.
