About this publication The Omnibus Dashboard Best Practice Guide and worked examples provides instructions for using Tivoli Netcool Omnibus WebGUI for dashboard creation and customisation. This guide does not replace the normal WebGUI user guide and provides specific worked examples that focus on dashboard and constituent map creation. The WebGUI user guide is the reference material for all detailed usage. The associated template is an example of what can be produced using the process demonstrated in this guide. Produce new dashboards to visualise specific fault management metrics that meet each end user s requirements. Omnibus Dashboard Best Practice Guide and Worked Examples V1.1 v

Chapter 1 Introduction Overview A dashboard is designed to give a broad overview of how well things are running in the network. Dashboards provide critical information on processes, performance and progress toward goals. This includes at-a-glance displays designed to impart knowledge quickly. Omnibus WebGUI is not only an event list. It provides a wide range of functionality to track and display key indicators in the network. End users can establish warnings and alerts in the event of poor performance and drill down on top line alert summaries to see detailed data. The dashboard provides the executive or operational user with a single, simple view of the fault management network. Dynamic real-world views are refreshed on a timely basis. Omnibus WebGUI is easy to use and requires no custom coding, making it easy to deploy and maintain. 6

Chapter 2 Top Ten Dashboard Design Tips Capture requirements directly from end users. Focus on what they want to do and why they need to do this. provides a link to an overview of usercentred-design process that can assist. Should be visible on a single page (1024x768 screen resolution without scrolling). Use drill down and additional pages if large volumes of data require presentation. Avoid excessive blank spaces and maximise the use of space available. A balance between space and content is required to ensure you do not present too much data on a page. Group related content together. Provide a consistent units of measurement so users understand the timeframe of the data they re looking at. Dashboards should flow appropriately. (e.g. from big picture to detailed) Dashboards must be appropriate to their job function and the end user. Ensure both content and data representation meets these requirements. E.g., Executives may only be interested in a high level overview of the network, where an engineer may require detailed information for each element. Use the correct visualization for the type of data. E.g. Pie charts for a proportional data at a point in time, maps for geographical or topology data. Avoids visualizations that distort or misrepresent data. E.g., avoid using 3D renderings of charts where 2D renderings are appropriate. 3D renderings may not add any additional quantitative information and may actually distort the data. Ensure there is a review process for dashboard design. 7

Chapter 3 Design Process Dashboard overview Dashboards are a visual display of the most important information needed to achieve one or more objectives. The optimal orientation of a dashboard fits entirely on a single computer screen, without scrolling and you can be monitor at a glance. Dashboards help users identify trends, patterns and anomalies to process the information and make good decisions. Dashboards provide a comprehensive overview of key performance indicators and may serve as a launchpad to complementary information. They are also used to make comparisons between different types of data. Data should be in a format that is the most meaningful to the user and easiest to interpret. To achieve even a single objective often requires access to a collection of information that is not otherwise related. The dashboard should display information of whatever type is needed to do a job. Dashboards must Be able to quickly point out something that deserves attention or might require action. Easily enable user to take necessary actions (shifting display, navigation, drilling down). Make the most important information clearly visible and quickly discernible. Allow user/executive to view several aspects of relevant data simultaneously. Allow user to monitor progress/performance. May provide individual views that are user selectable. General Recommendations Display mechanisms should be concise, clear and intuitive. Efficient use of screen real estate is important. Whatever mechanism best communicates the information should be used. If a mechanism is appropriate for a data type, it can be used multiple times on a page. Avoid use of mechanisms for the sake of novelty or style. Avoid unnecessary decoration. 8

Requirements capture The purpose of a dashboard is to provide the user with business information that is insightful and in an easily consumable format. Fault Management Dashboards leverage operational data primarily in the form of metrics and events. Using a requirements capturing process ensures that you deliver end user requirements. Meeting the ease of use challenge is largely a matter of adhering to the following principles. For each principle, the goal is to involve users -- to ask the right people the right questions. Putting yourself in their shoes is a sure way to put your product at the front of the pack. This is an iterative process akin to peeling away layers of an onion until you define all requirements clearly. Set business goals. Determining intended user s business goals are central to all design and user participation. Understand users. A commitment to understand and involve the intended user is essential to the design process. If you want a user to understand your dashboard, you must first understand the user. Design the total user experience. The design process must assess all aspect of dashboard usage as a complete solution. How it is visualised, configured, reported and exported. Evaluate designs. Gather user feedback early and often, with this feedback driving product design and development. Manage by continual user observation. Throughout the life of the dashboard, continue to monitor and listen to your users, and let their feedback drive product enhancement. 9

Page layout How would you arrange the wide variety of content that can be placed on one Page? Think also about size, colour, position, Information flow, relationships, pop-ups and background. 10

End users could visualize data on this screen using the following sequence of actions: Click a technology (e.g. LTE) in the top left map section. Associated devices are displayed in the topology map section. Click a device in the LTE topology map section. The gauges in the Gauges section display data for that device and the Active Event List section displays any events for the selected device. The geographical map displays the location of the device. 11

Creating a page 1. Select Page Management in the navigation pane. 2. Select New Page. 3. Under page name, enter a unique name for your Page. 4. Click OK. 12

5. Select Map Radio button from Choose a Portlet. 6. Select OK. Your first page will now open. 7. Select Vertical split icon if you want to split the page into two portlets. The Horizontal Split icon can also be used. 13

8. Select Map Radio button from Choose a Portlet. 9. Select OK. 10. Repeat steps 7 to 9 to subdivide each portlet further to create the overall number of portlets that you require on the page. 11. Manually resize by dragging each of the portlets to your required sizes. 14

12. Select Save to save the page (save your work regularly) 13. To subsequently edit each page select EDIT Your page layout is now complete and you can now define the specific content required for each portlet. (In this example, maps are chosen as default portlet content to focus attention on the initial page layout and because a sizeable percentage of portlets will contain maps. This is not mandatory as portlet content can be defined to the user requirements at this stage.) 15

Map creation A key part of dashboard creation is the production of specific maps that meet the defined end user requirements and meet the needs of the business. These can be topology maps, geographical maps, toolbar type functionality etc. A graphical editor is used that can create and manipulate the map using Java or an HTML. Using Java is more user-friendly and delivers maps quicker. 1. Select Map Creation in the navigation pane. (await for the editor to initialise) 2. Select New. 3. Input a unique map name. (in this example LTE) 4. Select OK. 16

5. In the Java MAP Editor, define the Map Size Height and Width. It is important to match the map size to the portlet size that was produced during page creation. 6. Select the Background colour. 7. Select a Background image if required. 8. Select File and Import Image. 17

9. Select the required image that you require from your local or remote directory. 10. Repeat steps 8-9 until all your require images are loaded on your map and placed where required. 11. Additional Buttons, Active Buttons, Lava Lamps Monitors, Icons, Lines, and Text can be added by using the toolbar below the map. 12. Right click each image and define the Properties tab. If images have been imported, attributes can be changed at this point. 18

13. Define the Associations tab. You can associate an active map object with an AEL, LEL, or Table View. When the object is clicked, the resource is opened. You cannot associate inactive icons or inactive lines with a URL. Select how the resource will be displayed using the Target field. To display the resource in a named IFrame, type the name of the IFrame in the Target field. Otherwise, choose one of the following values from the drop-down menu: a. _self indicates the full browser window. b. _blank indicates a new web browser window. c. _parent indicates the parent frame set containing the source link. d. _top indicates the frame containing the source link. Size, Position, Colour and Font can also be modified on the last two remaining tabs of the Properties box. 14. Select OK. 15. Select Save from the File menu on the Java Editor. 19

Changing map content Once the relevant maps have been created, each of the portlets on the dashboard page can be updated. 1. Select Edit options and then Edit Shared Settings for the required portlet. 2. Select the Map name that you defined in Map creation and want to place in this portlet. Sound URL Type the URL to the sound file that specifies the sound to play when the status of the map is updated during a refresh. The URL must be specified in the following format: protocol://host:port/path/filename.fileextension Refresh rate Type a time value in seconds that specifies the interval between refresh operations for the map. Enable hover help for active objects Select this check box to display hover help for active map objects that are associated with a filter. The hover help displays information from the filter.
