3 Buttonholes 1 Utility Patterns, Tab 4, buttonhole 4-06 Decorative Sewing Techniques Thread the machine with polyester thread Turn on the machine Select one of buttonhole styles NOTE: Decrease the stitch length to Increase the density of the buttonhole. 1 Piece of cotton material 1 Piece of tear away stabilizer Thread to match fabric or contrast Fabric marker 1. Fold the fabric in half length wise. 2. Place the tear away interfacing under the fabric. 3. Use the fabric marker to mark the position of the buttonhole. 4. Snap the buttonhole foot on the machine and pull down the buttonhole lever. 5. Place the button in the buttonhole foot, push slide to set the buttonhole length. 6. Position the fabric under the buttonhole foot; place the fold of the fabric to the front of the machine. The buttonhole starts to stitch in reverse first. 7. Begin to sew the buttonhole. The machine will automatically stop when the buttonhole is completed. 8. Press the thread cutter to cut the thread when finished. 9. Select from the Character and Decorative stitch Select single and small 11. Stitch the selected design at the end of the buttonhole. Place the design in three different positions. 1

Fold the fabric in half and press along this line. 2. Place the 5 hole cording foot on the machine and thread with the pink thread in the top and the bobbin. Place a piece of cording in the center hole of the three hole area. Decorative Sewing Techniques 3. Select the zigzag stitch 1-09 and change the stitch width to 1.5mm Stitch down the edge of each fold centering the fold in the center of the cording foot. Make sure the rest of the fabric is folded back out of the way. Only stitch along the folded edge. 4. Repeat steps 1 thru 3 with the other piece of fabric. 5. Place the pintuck foot on the sewing machine. Guide the corded edges into grooves right and left of center in the pintuck foot. 6. Select the fagoting stitch 2-12; adjust the zigzag stitch wide enough for the stitches to go just into the fabric on each side. The fabric on the underside can be trimmed to the stitching because of the zigzag stitch in the cording. 3

Mark fabric with fabric marker every 2 inches and press along this line. 2. Place the J foot on the sewing machine and select the straight stitch in the left position. Use the J foot as your guide and place the folded edge on the right side of the foot. Stitch the straight stitch using the white thread. Repeat with each pressed fold. 3. Press all folds toward the right. 4. Place the R foot on the machine and thread with the blue thread in the top and the bobbin. 5. Stitch down the edge of each fold using the hem stitch (2-01) as the decorative edge. Shorten the stitch length to 1.0 mm. Make sure the rest of the fabric is folded back out of the way. Only stitch on the folded edge. 6. Place the N foot on the machine. Select on the Select Pattern screen. 7. Select the decorative stitch (8-37) then select small (S) and stitch down the center of each of the folded sections. Make sure all the rest of the fabric is folded out of the way. 4

Mark the fabric where the decorative scallop edge will be stitched. 2. Select the R for repeating the pattern and select the scallop stitch. 3. Place the stabilizer under the fabric where the scallop edge will be stitched. 4. Stitch the scallop stitch until near the end, select S to stitch on complete single pattern of the stitch. 5. Turn, (pivot) with the needle down and continue to the next corner. (B) 1. Select the stitch and stitch the design small, with the right side of the presser foot along the bottom of the scallops. 2. Stitch the decorative stitch until near the end, then select S to stitch a complete single pattern of the stitch. 3. Turn, (pivot) with the needle down and continue to the next corner. 5

Thread the machine with 80wt. thread in the top and the bobbin. Do not use the needle threader Turn the machine on. Turn the scissors off Select the Rhodes stitch (honeycomb) stitch 3-12 Blind Stitch foot SA133 1 piece of cotton batiste fabric 1 piece of water-soluble stabilizer 80wt. thread Wing needle 100/16 1. Spray starch fabric and press 2. Draw a straight line on the fabric. 3. Place the water-soluble stabilizer under the fabric. 4. Stitch the Rhodes stitch (Honeycomb stitch) about 4 inches using the adjustable hem foot along the guideline. 5. Start the next row by selecting the same stitch again. This will reset the selected stitch to the starting point of the stitch. 6. Line up the stitch making sure the needle drops in the right hole of the previously sewn line of stitches. 7. Stitch very slowly. The guide should be very close to the right side of the previously stitched row of stitches. Stitch for the entire length of the previously stitched row. 8. Repeat #6 and #7 for as many rows as needed to cover the desired area. 6

9 Decorative Sewing Techniques Rolled Hem Straight stitch in the center Straight stitch center position, stitch 1-03 Narrow hemmer foot SA126 Light weight fabric 60wt thread to match fabric 1. Connect the foot controller so that both hands are free to guide the fabric. 2. Trim the fabric for a clean straight edge. 3. With the fabric wrong side facing up, fold the edge over twice where the narrow hem will begin. Pin with one pin. Make sure this starting hem is approximately the same width as the channel on the underside of the narrow hemmer foot. 4. Put the pinned narrow hem under the foot on the machine and lower the presser foot. 5. Take two or three stitches near the inside folded hem edge, stop with the needle down. Lift the presser foot and remove the pin. 6. Feed the fabric edge into the curl of the foot. 7. Lower the presser foot and slowly begin to stitch. Two hands are needed for perfect guiding. The right hand guides the fabric edge directly in front of the foot. The left hand gently pushes or pulls the fabric at the left front of the foot to keep the fabric edge at the left side of the ditch as it enters the foot. 7

10 Decorative Sewing Techniques Shadow Applique Place 70/10 needle in machine Select the stitch 3-04 (hemstitching) also known as Parisian stitch Width 2.0 and length 2.5 N foot 80 wt thread to match fabric for the top and bobbin 70/10 needle KK2000 Water-soluble marker 8 X 8 sheer fabric 8 X 8 Lightweight fabric for appliqué or the same fabric 1. Spray starch and press both pieces of fabric. 2. Trace design for shadow appliqué onto fabric with the water soluble marker. 3. Lay this over the other fabric and pin in place. 4. Stitch on the right side of the fabric following the traced design using the Parisian stitch, stitch Stitch slowly and watch the stitch as it stitches. The stitch will go back and forth and come forward on the seventh stitch. For a sharp turn, stop at this point and lift the presser foot and turn. Put the presser foot down and stitch the next stitch. This stitch can be mirror imaged if it is preferred to stitch with the bulk of the fabric on the other side. 5. Carefully trim away the appliqué fabric around the appliqué design from the back. The Parisian stitch (also called pin stitch) resembles the letter L repeating the vertical stitches. To execute a turn do so as soon as the lower part of the L is completed. Lift the presser foot and turn the fabric slightly at the point where the horizontal stitch meets the vertical stitch. 8

11 Venetian Hemstitch (hemstitching) Utility Patterns, Tab 3, stitch 3-08 Decorative Sewing Techniques Place the wing needle in the machine Thread the machine with Brother polyester thread (Do Not Use the needle threader) Brother bobbin thread in the bobbin Turn on the machine Select the Venetian stitch 3-08 Turn OFF Scissors Thread by hand 1 -Piece of linen look fabric 4 X 6 Spray starch Wing needle 100/16 Thread color of choice Brother bobbin thread 1. Spray starch fabric and press. 2. Pull a thread out of the fabric about ¾ from the edge and ¾ from the bottom edge. This will be the stitching line and is perfectly straight with the grain. 3. Stitch the Venetian stitch straight down the center where the thread was pulled. 4. Turn the corner when the stitch meets the pulled thread in the other direction. Make sure when turning the corner that the needle is in the center of the stitch. 5. When stitching is complete pull out all threads up to the Venetian Hemstitch. The hem stitch will keep the fraying from going any farther. 9
