3 Stakeholder Mapping in Turkey Objective: to identify stakeholders with an interest in social and economic burden of chronic disease Results: 79 organizations - including patients rights groups, foundations, economists and academics and health care provider groups with mandate related to access to healthcare 61 groups and individuals were selected for follow-up questionnaires and interviews

5 Stakeholder Engagement Result organizations invited to a workshop in Oct to discuss burden of chronic disease in Turkey. Workshop participants: Health Development Directorate of the Turkish Ministry of Health, Prof Mehtap Tatar Haceteppe University and study coauthor, patient advocacy leader from civil society organization in India, a representative of the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease, a U.S.-based NGO. A follow up workshop Sept in Istanbul

8 Key Points Health Improvement in Turkey Since 1970 life expectancy at birth has risen by 25 years and the infant death rate has fallen from about 150 to under 10 per 1000 live births However, rising rates of non-communicable disease and LTD causing welfare losses that cost more than current spending all all forms of health care Type 2 diabetes has doubled in little more than a decade, above the rate recorded in the US High vascular disease burdens, relatively high incidence of COPD and similar conditions Transforming Health in Turkey: 21st Century Opportunities

12 Public Health, National Wealth and the Role of Pharmaceutical Care Continue to support economic growth by: Minimizing maternal mortality Promoting the rational use of medicines, smoking cessation, and exercise amongst both men and women Use medicines to reduce blood pressure/ cholesterol and to prevent disabilities caused by diabetes or asthma to increase value in social circumstances As people age and transition socially they demand enhanced health/social services, and treatments for later life conditions such as cancers Transforming Health in Turkey: 21st Century Opportunities
