1 Newsletter Dear Parents & Friends of Kuyper, Thursday 24 November /10 Urban Adventure Camp Learning in God s World is more than just learning out of a text book and sitting in classrooms. Learning should be adventurous, engaging, authentic and challenging, not only in the classroom but outdoors in the world, in different environments and places. Above all, learning should be Christ centred and challenge our views and involvement in God s plans for the world. Last week, Years 9 and 10 lived their learning through an Urban Adventure Experience at Cockatoo Island near Sydney s CBD. Starting the morning on the Harbour, hopping from Ferry to Ferry and train to train, each day began with beauty, busyness and a whole new world for our Kuyper students. History site tours, electric bikes, the observatory, the beach and Chinese Gardens filled our days with excitement and new experiences. Our final day was confronting, sad and so eye opening. An Urban Walk with the Rough Edges organisation from St Johns Anglican Church Darlinghurst took us on an emotional journey with a homeless man through Kings Cross. Here are some of the students accounts of their experiences: During camp we stayed at Cockatoo Island. I really enjoyed having my first camping experience and sharing it with friends made it even more enjoyable. On the first day we took a tour of Cockatoo Island that enabled us to learn a lot about the history of the Island. Hearing how the convicts and girls who lived there were treated was at times confronting, however I really appreciated being able to see how the convicts lived; exploring what life would have been like for them. Overall this was the best camp I have ever been on. Lauren Fraser On Year 9/10 camp we got the opportunity to ride electric bikes. We got to ride across the Harbour Bridge and around the City. The bikes had a set speed of 25km/h. We got to ride around Observatory Hill where some people did a couple of skids and one person ended up having to walk their bike back to the shop because of a burst tyre. We rode across the Harbour Bridge to Lavendar Bay and the Secret Garden. The Secret Garden was created by the wife of the late artist Brett Whitely. The ride was one of the highlights of camp. James Kirkby We visited Kings Cross on the last day of camp and as part of this, we took part in a Rough Edges tour. Rough Edges is a café that is designed to provide disadvantaged people with some food to eat and a safe place to rest. It was founded by St John s Anglican Church, Darlinghurst, after the church saw a great need to support the many homeless people that reside in the area. During our tour, we met a guy named Tony, who walked us through the streets of Kings Cross, sharing both the history and significance of certain places, as well as some stories about his own life. It was an eye-opening experience to hear about and see the immense struggles that minority groups have faced. Hearing Tony s testimony has challenged my perception of drug addicts and encouraged me in my faith. When you are confronted with situations like these, it changes your perspective on the way you view the world and the way you view others. Pray for Kuyper families grieving the loss of family members this week. Pray for our Limelight Community Celebration event, for the preparations and the performance, that many would come and hear the Gospel and be strengthened and changed. Pray for other Carols events around the Hawkesbury that God would be honoured and enjoyed. 4 Thursday November February As we near the end of the year, would all families please finalise their school fees for Thank you to all who have already done so. If you have any questions regarding your fees, please call or Tina on or School Banking has finished for It will resume Term 1, We are looking for additional helpers at Limelight. If you can help on the night, please register your willingness with the School Office. We need additional people to prepare, cook and serve. We need Association Members who can proof read novels for suitability for our students. Books may be read over the Christmas break. Please let the office know if you can help. We will contact you. Kuyper is seeking expressions of interest for the position of additional cleaning and maintenance 0.1 FTE part time to support the specialised cleaning and maintenance needs of the school.
