3 Basic pillars of the Danube Region Strategy Cycling con be perfectly connected with most of the key elements from Action Plan of EU Strategy for the Danube Region: Linking Danube Region (transport, energy, culture and tourism), Environmental Protection (water management, environmental risks, ecosystems) Creating prosperity (competitiveness, research, education and technology, experienced workforce) Strengthening the Region (strengthening institutional capacity and security, exchange of good practices and spatial planning) The proposed Project enables multi-modal cross-border cooperation between member countries of the Danube Region Strategy. 3

4 The advantages of cycling Cycling can be: an excellent, economical alternative for commuting in daily migration, a very efficient means of relaxation and recreation, a solid contribution to reducing stress and health sector costs, It has the positive effects on environment and energy-saving measures, it provides more free and efficient use of leisure time and more intensive and healthier experience of the environment, cycling can perfectly be associated with entrepreneurial opportunities and tourism. 4

5 Main objectives of the project 1. To connect the touristic cycling travels and every day biking in the cities Use bicycle for traveling, sport, excursion and tourism implementation of long-distant cycling connections on the international, national, regional and local level to connect the cities with cycling routes. Use bicycle for every day commuting and to make our cities more attractive for visitors and tourists and more liveable by stimulating sustainable modes of transport. 2. Influence of cycling in perspective of business and economy 5

6 Bicycle tourism The rural cconnections of Danube cycling network should mostly take place in unspoiled nature along rivers, forest trails, abandoned routes of other infrastructures or they should run along low traffic roads. The cycling network should be connected to the main tourist attractive points such as places with rich natural and cultural heritage, rivers, waterfalls, lakes, botanical gardens, mountain farms and cottages, hotels, health resorts, spas, sport centers and camping areas. In combination with cycling it is necessary to stimulate people to return back to the nature and to promote the revival of the old forgotten systems. The specificity of the Danube Region are rivers, the promotion of river nautical tourism, cruisers and rafting tour in combination with cycling is desirable. 6

7 Use bicycle for commuting in the city The Danube Bicycle Network should be also connected to the most attractive tourist villages and cities with rich historical, natural and cultural heritage, ea. museums, churches, famous architectural buildings, amusement parks, restaurants, shops, river banks, lakes etc. The touristic cities should enable good conditions for cycling and they should offer as much as opportunities and attractions to have active cycling experience. At the same time, this infrastructure in the cities and in the hinterland of the cities offers also good conditions for cycling for the residents and it creates better conditions for their living. If the cycling becomes fashion it will influence on daily use of cycling as a mode of transport. Especially in Slovenia and also in some other countries, the cities are not so big and the distances between them are peaty short, so people can use intercity cycling connections also for daily commuting or for afternoon recreation. 7

8 Cycling in perspective of business and economy Given the wide scale of possibilities which can be linked to cycling, it becomes interesting also from the perspective of business and economy. Tourists increasingly demand programs related to cycling. From the business perspective improved cycling infrastructure can lead to better quality of tourist offer and the DrCyleNet Project can much contribute to make more internationally tourist market between the partner s countries. More and more people want to stay active with bike, so the income posed by cycling tourism in cycling developed countries, almost no lags behind the income from other forms of tourism. Cycling offers numerous opportunities for the development of several entrepreneurial activities. 8

9 The main purpose of the DrCycleNet The main project purpose is to establish the best possible conditions to connect every day cycling with recreational and touristic cycling. The major focus is given to the greater popularization of bicycle traffic, to better environment, better living conditions, better lifestyle and to active spending on leisure time. At the same time the project goal is to create new ideas for business in connection with cycling. The Danube cycling network must enable an integration of bicycle traffic to the other transport systems as train, inland water transport, ferry, or bus. It has to provide a logical crossborder compatible system in all neighbouring countries. For people which don t bring their bicycles with, there should be an opportunity to rent it. 9

10 Methodology of work The project can be considered as a Flagship Cycling project which connects Eastern Europe with Western Europe through a Danube Cycling Network. The overall goal is to obtain greater cross-border territorial, transport, economic and political cohesion between the countries in Danube Region and to improve the international competitiveness in the tourist market, tendering to provide new jobs. All activities based on collection of good practices and the transfer of knowledge and experiences. The main goal of the project is to introduce the uniform principle of the methodology for Comprehensive Cycling Tourism Mobility Management Strategies preparation, with focus of development of bicycle tourism in the Danube Region. The key of success is the common future cooperation in fields of helping the less developed countries with improving the design and implementation of cycling infrastructure and to enable national and international connectivity and safety for cyclists. 10

11 Conclusions Because of the cultural level of the society and growing sensitivity to the environment and as well as increased awareness, a planned inclusion of cycling routes into the national road network was already carried out in all developed European countries. The international long-distance cycling connections should continuously run throughout all partner s countries and they should link major cities, more important tourist and cultural centres which offers them several opportunities to enjoy. This Project integrates more efficiency into the trans- European cycling network and helps to complete the EuroVelo cycling network corridors as well as development of the national rural cycling connections. In the 2nd phase, after the evaluation process, followed the implementation of the specific pilot projects. 11
