International MBA / MA Mgmt programme Saxion University offers this full-time international MBA / MA Mgmt programme in association with the University of Greenwich, UK. Successful students will obtain an internationally recognised, academic British Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree or a British Master of Arts in Management (MA Mgmt) degree. These masters have an overall joint programme, with the degree awarded depending on the student s number of years of working experience. Classes are engaging, knowledge sharing is plentiful This Greenwich MBA / MA Mgmt programme aims to develop the business leaders of the future. It approaches leadership development thematically from the starting points of creativity, practicality and social resourcefulness. Personal development is also a key theme of the programme with executive coaching to help students understand their value in the market and develop plans to optimise their potential. Academic learning is complemented by experiential and practical learning using case studies and business simulations, and culminating in a real-world consultancy engagement. Within the programme students complete an independent business research project. Learning environment A mixed group of experienced Saxion lecturers and guest lecturers use a variety of teaching and learning methods. Lessons are in small-scale, dialogue-driven classes and workshops. The programme offers a broad general understanding combined with in-depth insights in an open and co-operative learning environment, supported by e-learning. Learning outcomes By the end of the MBA / MA Mgmt programme, students will be able to demonstrate the following learning outcomes: The ability to apply relevant knowledge to a range of complex situations, taking into account how this relates to other areas of the business organisation. 4 This course has been designed to provide participants with a knowledge base and a conceptual framework that will enable them to operate more effectively within such a diverse environment. As well as being diverse, the modern business environment is also dynamic. Rising to the challenge of change is essential if managers and their organisations are to be successful in the longer term. Strategy and Transformation Organisations are faced with an increasingly competitive environ ment nowadays. To attain a secure and successful future they need to develop and deliver resilient strategies that provide a lasting competitive advantage. This course equips students with the core concepts, frameworks and techniques of strategic management that enable them to make better decisions. The course draws upon the theoretical framework developed in the Business Environment course and integrates the perspectives laid down in the courses associated with the functional areas of the business organisation. Case studies play a major part in both the teaching and assessment strategy, as the intention is to develop participants capacity to deal imaginatively with unique and real-life business situations. Programme The programme consists of ten courses, which will be provided over a period of nine months. Students start their dissertation after successfully completing the ten courses. Foundations of Scholarship and Business Research Skills This course develops students knowledge and understanding of academic practice and research. It utilises a problem-based learning approach to develop students practical competence in aspects appropriate to academic practice and research in business and management. Financial Management It is important to integrate financial plans into strategic plans and operational decisions rather than operating independently, these interact with each other and with other parts of the organisation. They must also be viewed in the wider legal, economic and ethical context, and within the global business environment. This course seeks to provide students with the opportunity to examine the principles of sound financial management and to explore the practical application of these through case studies. Ultimately, the intention of the course is to enable students to take a leading role in understanding and promoting both effective and ethical practices in the financial management of an organisation. Leadership, Personal Development and Career Management The programme seeks to develop students potential to become leaders of industry in the future. This requires them to understand and develop the skills required, both to leader others and to manage their own careers. Key to the leadership development process is the creation and tracking of an Action Plan that enables the future leader to benefit from the longterm effects of behavioural change. Personal and professional development is a continuous process. This course focuses on the personal development qualities which, together with the theoretical and practical elements of other courses, completes the holistic approach to the programme. Human Resource and Information Management In order to function effectively, organisations must identify strategic resources and make effective decisions related to their use. Intangible assets such as human capital and information/ knowledge capital may be utilised to generate value for the business. Organisations must integrate human resource issues into strategic plans and decisions. Information, and the use to which it is put within an organisation, has become a source of competitive advantage. It is important to understand that these resources are interlinked, both with each other and with other parts of the organisation. They must also be viewed in the wider political, legal, economic, social and technological context, and within the global business environment. Business Context and International Business Environment In view of the ongoing process of globalisation, today s organisations exist in an increasingly international context. Managers are now required to be sensitive to a range of different social, political and economic systems that make up the complex environment in which they operate. Business Analysis Business Analysis is the technical component of business planning and control. It is impossible to make effective plans without having a grasp of key items of current information. Monitoring and control are likewise dependent on being able to demand, access, process, interpret and communicate this

Business analysis requires a high level of transferable skills, the ability to deconstruct and reformulate problems from a variety of business contexts, and the deve lopment of a critical approach to both qualitative and quant i tative information. Managing the Value Chain Michael Porter s value chain and associated emerging theories and critiques are established analytical tools for considering specific business activities that add value to a firm s products or services. With the advent of global electronic communications and commerce, however, it can be suggested that there are some key weaknesses in the interpretation of traditional value chain models which were developed in the context of the manufacturing industry when they are applied to complicated demand chain networks. The course is the practical focus of the master programme in that it requires students to apply all the skills acquired throughout the programme. Two aspects will receive special attention in preparatory learning: group-based creative problem-solving techniques and the soft, negotiated dimensions of being a consultant. Integrative Strategic Workshops and Simulations The programme seeks to develop individuals knowledge of effective and ethical management principles plus the competence and confidence to apply that knowledge within practical business scenarios. This requires a combination of both academic and experiential learning elements, bringing together both knowledge and skills, in a holistic approach. On this basis, it is argued that a customer-orientated value network that facilitates an iterative, dynamic approach in response to marketplace variables is now required. The challenge for tomorrow s manager is to consider the interdependent nature of an organisation and the requirement for crossfunctional decision-making in a global market. This course will integrate the traditional stove pipe marketing and operations business models into a supply chain network perspective to help students successfully overcome that challenge when operating in international environments. Creative Problem Solving and Consultancy Project This course is designed to give students the experience of working as members of a team to investigate and recommend solutions for a business problem. Students will work on real-life business problems and present solutions to managers in the client organisations. Within a team environment and through the use of business simulations, this course provides students with the opportunity to experience, explore and evaluate the practical application of business concepts and the relationship between outcomes and theoretical principles. Independent Business Research Project This course, commonly called a dissertation, is a key element in Programmes of study leading to a Masters award. Students reaching this level will already have experience of investigation techniques and report writing and will successfully have completed the Research Methods Course. It is required to plan, organise and implement a business research project and on that basis to write a dissertation. During this period students will be assigned a tutor who is a specialist in the chosen field.

6 Dr. Adrienn Eros Lecturer Master of Business Administration and Master of Arts in Management I have been a lecturer in business analysis and research methods on the MBA / MA mgmt programme for 4 years. These modules are two of the more complicated ones, dealing with numbers and calculations. I find it rewarding to see how students rise to these challenging tasks and improve their performance during the programme. Supervising dissertations is also a part of my job. I enjoy this very much as it gives me the opportunity to get to know the students better, both professionally and personally. I have met many interesting people from all over the world and, through their work, I have gained new insights into life in countries that I was previously unfamiliar with. The programme always attracts students with many different nationalities, including a good mix of Asians, Africans and Europeans. It is a great experience to teach in a group of young professionals who, between them, have experience of working in all four corners of the globe. Their different backgrounds and opinions add value to the learning process for their fellow students and lecturers alike. It is always a challenge to know how to effectively approach a group with such diverse nationalities, educational backgrounds and work experience, but it is this diversity that makes my job so enjoyable.
