MP4582 Fine-Tune Your Model Performance in Autodesk Revit MEP Teri Wagner Darryl McClelland
Introductions Teri Wagner, BIM Coordinator, Heapy Engineering. Teri has 17 years of experience in the architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing industry. Armed with her knowledge base of various Autodesk products she transitioned to the world of Building Information Modeling (BIM) five years ago. Teri has been instrumental with standard and workflow process creation and documentation and the overall enforcement of the same. She manages some of the most complicated and complex project models at Heapy Engineering.
Introductions Darryl McClelland, LEED AP BD + C, BIM and Virtual Design Manager / Project Coordinator, Heapy Engineering. Darryl is a graduate of Purdue University and has over 26 years of practical design experience in the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing industry. Although his primary focus is the design of mechanical systems, he has designed electrical and plumbing systems as well. He also owned his own engineering business for eight years. His design experience ranges from complex research laboratories and institutional facilities to medical and professional office buildings, and everything in between. He is an active member of ASHRAE and ASPE and has also co-authored nationally published books centered on the BIM process. He currently oversees and helps integrate the BIM process into all Heapy Engineering projects.
Class Summary Models running slow? In this class, we will take a look at some performance enhancing tips to make your models open, save, and perform faster. We will also talk about what can be discussed with your architectural partners before anything gets modeled in Revit.
Learning Objectives At the end of this class, you will be able to: Explain what is involved with managing models in Revit MEP List topics that can be discussed with your architectural partners before starting a project in Revit Create lite versions of architectural models for linking Effectively use worksets and review, find, and resolve review warnings
Class Expectations This is a broad overview of how Heapy Engineering has approached Model Management. Model Management is the key to achieving well performing models for any Revit project. Do to time constraints of this class, we do not expect to demonstrate the Revit product today. Time has been set aside for questions at the end of the lecture. Please hold questions for then.

What topics can be discussed with your architectural partners before starting a project in Revit? (Where it all begins) Create lite versions of architectural models for linking Effectively use worksets and review, find, and resolve review warnings Questions
What is involved with managing models in Revit MEP? Poor performing models affect the bottom line Model management is a workflow process Review processes and workflow with each release of Revit Project Setup When to use a single model or split disciplines into separate models Rule of thumb: Square footage x 2 = File Size. (87,000 SF x 2 = 174 MB) 200MB is the magical number Buildings 100,000 SF or larger get split into separate discipline models Mileage may vary depending on hardware configuration, standards, etc.
What is involved with managing models in Revit MEP? Space Naming Utility/Monitoring Room Changes Must visually inspect to ensure all areas have spaces Matchlines Visual monitoring required Managing Links Relative Paths are best Revit doesn t like mapped drive letters Review model for imported links Monitor Correct Workset Use Worksets are similar to layers Incorrectly used can impact performace and cause visibility issues Can affect exporting to NavisWorks
What is involved with managing models in Revit MEP? Monitoring View use Develop naming convention Delete extraneous views Project Updates What s changed in the architect s file Copy/Monitor doesn t show new items
What is involved with managing models in Revit MEP? Coordination Review One person assigned to address all coordination review items Who should be taking care of all of this? Develop BIM standards Select a few key individuals Project teams should establish a model manager role
Can you find the new levels in this view?
Class Agenda Housekeeping items A helpful resource guide for your Revit MEP efforts (aka Shameless Plug) What is involved with managing models in Revit MEP? What topics can be discussed with your architectural partners before starting a project in Revit? (Where it all begins) Create lite versions of architectural models for linking Effectively use worksets and review, find, and resolve review warnings Questions
Where it all begins Project Expectations What are the expectations of the Client? Indiana University (BIM Standard) What are the expectations of the entire Project Team? Coordination or something different? Hold the project team to the expectations Project kick-off meeting What product version will be best suited for this project? What is the duration of the project? How will the project team handle new product releases for lengthy projects (through design and record drawings)? How big is the project and how many models should be created for ease of use for the project team? 3 (MEP) : 1 (Arch) ratio for models
Where it all begins Breaking up is hard to do Core and shell with interiors model? Area model, building model, floor model, models broken at expansion joints or other logical locations? What is the anticipated sheet size (24x36 vs. 30x42 vs. 36x48)? All impact total number of Views and thus impact overall model performance. Model components Is the ceiling room bounding? Floors should not be room bounding, especially in Model Groups. Are items going to be hosted to the walls, ceilings or floors? Are shared coordinates going to be used? Is phasing going to be used? What will be items will be Copy/Monitor (levels, grids, plumbing fixtures, lights)? All impact overall model performance
Where it all begins Virus protection for Revit Minimize DWG files Link DWG files do not import them Create Revit details DWG files in Revit dramatically impacts model performance Emergency Management System WARNINGS!!! Entire project team must address warnings. Design Options Should be resolved prior to CD s and be deleted as soon as possible. Worksets Used to consolidate total number of models? Purging
Create lite versions of architectural models for linking Typical Update Process Detach File and Open > Purge > Save > Re-establish Links > Synch & Relinquish Good for small and medium sized projects Not Necessary for Every Project Use on files that exceed 200MB after normal purge Everything Must Go!* Delete every sheet, legend, schedule and view *Must retain any needed view for Linked Views Errors Make note of any errors and forward info to appropriate contacts
Worksets Establish guidelines Start with a basic set of worksets *Shared Levels and Grids E Lighting E Power E Technology M HVAC M Plumbing xcad Links xrvt Arch-Link xrvt Struct-Link Get a feel from users what works and doesn t work for them
Worksets Add designators to further expand list *Shared Levels and Grids E XX Lighting E XX Power E XX Technology M XX HVAC Ductwork M XX HVAC Piping M XX Plumbing xcad Links xrvt Arch-Link-COSH xrvt Arch-Link-Interior xrvt Struct-Link Place items on workset for level or area from which it orginates. Practice makes perfect
Once a DWG File Always a DWG File No matter how clean the DWG, they are still dirty in Revit Limit number of linked DWGs Link over Import Place links on separate worksets Only good for links set to show in all views Create Revit details instead Place CAD Links into a Separate RVT File for Linking Link into Drafting Views and Name according to Standards
Review Warnings Two types of warnings Error Messages Warning Messages Just because a Warning says it can be ignore does not mean it should be ignored!! Review and address every Warning that occurs No definitive list of warnings Warnings can account for 20% of project slowdown
Review Warnings Focus on warnings that: Affect Calculations, rooms/areas & wall/boundary errors Duplication (multiple elements in the same place) Affect documentation How do I Find the Elements Involved in a Warning? Manage Tab > Inquiry Panel > Warnings button (tooltip says Review Warnings) Manage Tab > Inquiry Panel > Element ID drop-down > Select by ID Who s Responsible for Fixing Review Warnings? Entire project team How Many Warnings is it ok to Safely Have? No magical number for this
Can you tell what s wrong with this picture?
