1 Supporting your child with SPAG
2 What is SPAG? Why the focus? The English grammar, punctuation and spelling test assesses your child s English skills in: Spelling Punctuation Grammar; and Vocabulary
3 What is SPAG? Why the focus? The Department for Education introduced the test to make sure that when children leave primary school they are confident in grammar, punctuation and spelling. Changes have also been made to GCSEs so that from 2013 there are marks awarded for spelling, punctuation and grammar in key subjects. By developing these skills early on, your child will improve their chances of succeeding in important qualifications later on in their education.
4 Spelling End of Key Stage 1 and 2 Children will continue with phonics teaching and learning into key stage 2. However as they progress through the school they will also continue to develop their knowledge of various spelling strategies. Including prefixes, suffixes, word families, spelling rules (e.g. plurals) and common exception words which often confuse the children. Children are taught to visualise words from early writing onwards, which in turn helps them with self correction. Children are provided with dictionaries to check and correct spellings. Through marking, the identification and correction of spelling errors is individualised for your children.

7 Reading into Writing As a child improves in their reading, their spelling will also improve. If a child reads a wide range of books, their vocabulary will expand and progress.
8 And now to punctuate
9 Punctuation Punctuation is taught directly from Reception onwards to help children to understand when and where it is used. It helps the reader to make sense of what is written. It is incorporated within lessons to provide opportunities for children to apply the skills they have learnt.
10 What s the purpose of punctuation? Punctuation mark Capital letter What is it used for? At the end of a sentence expressing strong emotion.. To be used in place of a missing letter or letters in a contraction.? Use before certain lists and when writing the time.! Used to join certain words that are put together to form a single idea. To mark the end of a sentence. Use between two independent clauses if a conjunction is not used. : Used to enclose explanations and other extra information in a sentence. ; To mark the start of a sentence or a proper noun. - Used to separate items in a series, to join independent clauses with a conjunction, and to set off a direct quotation in a sentence. ( ) To enclose the exact words someone says., Used at the end of a question.

14 Getting to grips with grammar
15 Grammar The cat sat on the mat. The first thing children learn to do in terms of grammar is organise words into sentences in order to express themselves with meaning. Grammar also includes identifying words such as nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc. E.g. in year 2.

Therefore the children need to bridge the link between using the grammar and knowing the associated terminology. The content of the SPAG tests has always been delivered however they may not have learnt the terminology explicitly.
