16 Skin Care The skin is the largest organ of the body. It protects the body against diseases and bacteria forming a barrier against the surrounding world. The skin also affects our appearance and is therefore an important part of our mental well-being. The skin consists of three layers: the epidermis (top layer), dermis (intermediate layer), and hypodermis (bottom layer). The skin s barrier function is localized in the topmost layer of the epidermis, the stratus corneum. Getting older brings changes to the skin. Over time the skin becomes: More dry More flaccid and less elastic Thinner and more transparent Slower to regenerate and heal Such people may, for example, include: Incontinence patients Bedbound patients Infants/small children People working in dry environments Health care staff Delicate or exposed skin does not necessary mean problems. The right knowledge combined with good skin care are in most cases enough to maintain healthy skin. In addition to age, the skin is affected by many other factors, and some people are more exposed than others. 17 ph Value The ph value is essential, when we develop products for our skin care range. The ph value of the products is tailored to its specific purpose as we know that our end-users have different skin types and thereby also different needs. Normal skin has a ph value between 4.5 and 6.0. The intimate area is typically ph neutral between 3.0 and 4.0. The ph value is not an expression of an even increase. Every time the value changes by one, the product becomes 10 times more aggressive. Normal skin is typically capable of withstanding both low and high ph values. However, it may cause damage in the long term if the skin is exposed repeatedly during the day. Negative consequenses will come much faster for sensitive or troubled skin. Once the skin has sustained damage, it cannot be repaired only cared for. High ph values are typically observed in products containing cheap and harsh detergents and having a high proportion of water and thickeners. This is why it is important to ensure that the ph value of skin care products is adapted to the skin s natural condition. 18 Documentation EU Cosmetics Directive Since 1976, the rules applicable to cosmetic products have been set by the EU. The EU directives are aimed at ensuring consumer health and consumer information by monitoring product composition and labels. From 11 July 2013, Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 will replace the Cosmetics Directive. The new regulation supports a safety evaluation of the products as well as the prohibition of animal testing. Every product within our skin care range fully lives up to the requirements set by the EU. Primary Focus is Quality At Abena, we take yet another step towards ensuring the safety of our customers and, in particular, the end-user. This applies to both the quality of our products and the considerations for the environment. We therefore seek to get as many products as possible certified. It is a long and sometimes complicated process to secure a whole range of certified products. But thanks to our extensive product development, we are getting closer to achieving our ultimate goal of certification of all our products every day. Nordic Eco-label The Nordic Eco-label or Nordic swan is the official sustainability eco-label for the Nordic countries introduced by the Nordic Council of Ministers. The criteria are based on a cradle-to-grave principle that maps the total environmental impact over several stages, namely raw materials, production and packaging, use and disposal. Asthma-Allergy The allergy label is controlled by the Asthma & Allergy Association of Denmark. All ingredients are carefully examined by toxicologists and other professionals. Only products that pose the smallest possible risk of causing any form of allergy, eczema or skin irritation to the user will be certified. 18

The Abena disinfection range is developed from the same philosophy of offering the right products to our customers specific needs. We are in close on-going dialogue with our suppliers in order to develop the right products for our customers.
