3 What is MVHR? The ComfoAir heat recovery ventilation system works to extract air from wet rooms (kitchens and bathrooms) around the clock. It extracts the heat energy which would otherwise have been lost during the extract process and transfers this to the fresh, filtered supply air which is being drawn in from the outside. This is done using efficient counter flow heat exchangers and can recover up to 90% of heat which would otherwise have been exhausted to atmosphere. 2

28 5.1 Guidelines specific to Passivhaus properties Filter should be F7 supply air filter Flow rates differ Min air change rate is 0.3 air changes Air velocity in ducting must not exceed 2m/s in small branches and 3m/s along connections to the ventilation unit Must perform within certain parameters with regard to noise break out noise limit is 35 db(a) in room with heat recovery unit in, 30dB(A) in wet rooms and 25dB(A) in habitable rooms Must use cross talk attenuation between rooms unless using as dedicated duct run to each room 27

29 5.1 Guidelines specific to Passivhaus properties Units must have a pre-heater to prevent the unit shutting down in winter in low temperatures Specific supply air valves must be used to ensure comfortable and effective air distribution the Coanda effect Ducting can also be used to deliver heating from a post-heater so the correct type of ducting must be used Siting considerations may be different in Passivhaus properties e.g. MVHR unit should be located as close to the outside wall as possible to limit thermal losses through ducting, additional siting space may be required to accommodate post heaters and silencers needed to satisfy Passivhaus criteria 28
