2 Mission Statement As a school we are committed to the welfare of the individual child spiritually, socially, morally, psychologically, physically as well as academically. As a Catholic School we are responsible for teaching the whole child in the Word of Christ as told in the Gospels. Background Information St John the Baptist R.C. Primary School is situated in the Diocese of Plymouth and is maintained by Devon Local Education Authority. We are a small Catholic Primary School. We have a mixed catchment area with a large percentage of children being drawn from the nearby Townstal estate. This area is highlighted as having one of the highest levels of deprivation in the South Hams area. We have a high number of children with special Educational Needs. The school is set within a very supportive community. This includes an active PTA, which involves itself mostly in fund-raising and supporting the teachers. Aims of PSHE and Citizenship St John the Baptist RC School believes in developing children's notions of selfesteem and worth recognising that we are created in God's image. We feel that it is of the upmost importance to us as a Catholic school that our children feel that they belong. We want them to feel good and want to do their best. We aim to have children who get on with each other and are able to be able to say what they feel and understand each other. Our children need to feel safe and loved and to be able to take risks with their learning. PSHE and Citizenship in this school will be developmental and a foundation for further development in the secondary school. Legal Requirements of PSHE and Citizenship PSHE and Citizenship will contribute to the requirements of section 1 of the 1988 Education Reform Act and the school curriculum should be one which: promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and in society; and prepares such pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life' The Children s Act, 2004, sets out the following objectives under the Every Child Matters PSHE contributes to the following objectives. Be Healthy Children and Young People are physically healthy Children and Young People are mentally and emotionally healthy Children and Young People are sexually healthy Children and Young People live healthy lifestyles Children and Young People choose not to take illegal drugs Page 2 of 7

3 Stay Safe Children and Young People are safe from maltreatment, neglect, violence and sexual exploitation Children and Young People are safe from accidental injury and death Children and Young People are safe from bullying and discrimination Children and Young People are safe from crime and anti-social behaviour in and out of school Enjoy and Achieve Children and Young People attend and enjoy school Children and Young People achieve stretching national educational standards at primary school Children and Young People achieve personal and social development and enjoy recreation Children and Young People achieve stretching national educational standards at secondary school Making a positive contribution Children and Young People engage in decision making and support the community and environment Children and Young People engage in law-abiding and positive behaviour in and out of school Children and Young People develop positive relationships and choose not to bully or discriminate Children and Young People develop self-confidence and successfully deal with significant life changes and challenges Achieve Economic Well being Children and Young People are ready for employment Children and Young People live in decent homes and sustainable communities Children and Young People have access to transport and material goods Children and Young People live in households free from low income The school will work towards these aims in partnership with the parents. The PSHE and Citizenship programme focuses on the four strands of the national curriculum framework: Personal development - developing confidence and responsibility and making the most of their abilities Active citizens - preparing to play an active role as citizens Health and safety - developing a healthy, safer lifestyle Relationships - developing good relationships and respecting the differences between people Page 3 of 7

4 Other school policies which have relevance to PSHE and Citizenship are: Equal Opportunities Child Protection Behaviour/Anti Bullying Special Educational Needs and Inclusion Health and Safety Teaching and learning Healthy Eating Medical Children Looked After Sex and Relationship Education Policy Confidentiality Race Equality Sex and Relationships Education Design and Technology Moral and Values Framework The PSHE and Citizenship programme will reflect the school's over-arching aims and demonstrate and encourage the following values: respect for self responsibility for their own actions responsibility for their family, friends. school and wider community Equal Opportunities This school is committed to working towards equal opportunities in all aspects of school life. All resources used will support this commitment. Content The PSHE and Citizenship programme will: Develop children's self awareness, positive self-esteem and confidence to: stay as healthy as possible keep themselves and others safe have worthwhile and fulfilling relationships respect the differences between people develop independence and responsibility play an active role as a member of a democratic society make the most of their own and others' abilities Topics and themes will be revisited from year to year taking account of the pupil s development and the spiral curriculum concept. The content of the PSHE and Citizenship programme including learning outcomes will be based on the recommended education curriculum programme 'Health for Life' and Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) Materials as a framework. 5 Topics will include: Sex and Relationships Education e.g. feelings and relationships, my healthy body, lifestyles and culture, growing up Drugs Education e.g. medicine, personal safety, my healthy body, substance abuse Healthy Eating Physical Activity and Well-Being Emotional Health and Well-Being e.g. New Beginnings, Getting on and Falling Out, Say No to Bullying, Going for Goals, Good to be Me, Relationships, Changes. Physical and Social Environment Child Protection Citizenship Careers Education and Guidance Organisation PSHE and Citizenship will be co-ordinated by the head teacher in close cooperation. Delivery will be: as topics through planned aspects of science addressed occasionally in assembly time through pastoral time e.g. circle time through small group work through SEAL activities through story time Active learning methods which involve pupils full participation will be used. Single sex groups will be used as and when deemed appropriate. The resources used will be made available for parents to view at evenings for parents. Individual parents can also view resources by contacting the head teacher direct. St John the Baptist R.C. Primary School is committed to working towards equal opportunities in all aspects of school life. All resources and teaching methods used will support this commitment. At present all members of staff are committed to delivering the PSHE and Citizenship programme and who are supported by training. Specific Issue Statements Confidentiality Pupils will be made aware that some information cannot be held confidential and that their best interests will be maintained. Page 5 of 7

6 Disclosure or suspicion of possible abuse St John the Baptist R.C. Primary School has a Child Protection policy and procedure for dealing with child sexual abuse based on the LA guidelines and recommendations. This policy is available on request. Answering difficult questions Sometimes an individual child will ask an explicit or difficult question in the classroom. Teachers have been informed that they do not have to answer questions of this nature directly, they can be addressed individually later. The governors support individual teachers in using their discretion and skill in these situations and can refer to the deputy head if they are concerned. Provision for pubertal pupils Sanitary Disposal Units are located in the cubicles of the Class 3 girls' toilets. Girls requiring sanitary protection should go to the school office. Teaching and Outside Agencies At St John the Baptist R.C. Primary School, SRE lessons will be taught by class teachers. Outside agencies will be used to support and assist the teachers in the development of the classroom based work. On rare occasions outside agencies may be involved in classroom based work as part of the developmental programme following discussions and negotiation. They will be required to work within the school s moral framework outlined earlier. Lessons will only have a teaching input from anyone other than the class teacher when there a clear enhancement that they can bring. In this instance these sessions will be jointly planned and run jointly between teaching staff and visitors and the class teacher will be present at all times. The schools procedures for working with external agencies and teaching and learning policy will be followed, including criminal record bureau checks. HIV/AIDS policy The Church calls on us to respond to people with AIDS with the same support, compassion and love as those who suffer from other illnesses. The school follows the procedure outlined by the County council with regard for supporting pupils or staff infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. See website ith_hiv_aids.htm Complaints Procedures Any complaints about the PSHE curriculum should be made to the head teacher who will report to the governors via the link governor. Dissemination of the Policy All staff members and governors will receive a copy of this policy. Copies are available for loan from the office on request. 7 be included in the school prospectus. The policy is published on the schools website. Assessment and Recording Teachers assess the children s work in PSHE and citizenship both by making informal judgements as they observe them during lessons and by doing formal assessments of their work, measured against the specific learning objectives set out in the National Curriculum. We have clear expectations of what the pupils will know, understand and be able to do at the end of each key stage. Teachers record the achievements of pupils in PSHE and citizenship on prepared forms. We report these achievements to parents each year. We do not set formal examinations in PSHE and citizenship. The assessments that we make of pupil achievement do not imply that a pupil has passed or failed. Monitoring and Review A nominated governor will have a link role between the school and the governing body. The PSHE co-ordinator is responsible for monitoring the standards of children s work and the quality of teaching. The co-ordinator supports colleagues in the teaching of PSHE and citizenship, by giving them information about current developments in the subject and by providing a strategic lead and direction for the subject in the school. The PSHE co-ordinator arranges visits to the school from any relevant representative from a partner organisation who is involved in supporting the PSHE provision. Page 7 of 7
