I did not experience any difficulties with the courses due to bad or wrong academic prepration. language preparation The courses I took where tought in English and the teacher had a good and adequate level of english. Most of them spoke even better English than the teachers at Utrecht (regarding the courses I took that were taught in English) finances The costs where higher than expected. study programme (content and organisational issues) Interesting courses and fine organization academic quality of education activities STUDY ABROAD PERIOD Good quality, and intersting too. For a course in Criminology we even went to visit two prisons which was super intersting and definitely gave more depth to my overall experience abroad. counselling & support at receiving university abroad People were always helfull and willing to help. Very friendly staff. transfer of credits Didn't receive this yet because I had to take a re-exam. My transcript of records will be send to UU automatically. page 1 of 8

2 welcome & orientation programme STUDENT LIFE I did not participate in the welcome & orientation programme because I wasn't in the country yet at this point. accommodation It was difficult to find housing and the options that The Housing Foundation offered us where very limited. Fortunately I can call myself lucky and I did find accomodation myself, but I do realize that a lot of other students didn't and had to stay in hostel during the first weeks. leisure & culture I literally love danish culture and I took part in some cultural activities organized by ESN (e.g. a visit to the ballet). I furthermore explored a lot with fellow exchange students and did regular visits to museums etc. suggestions/tips Just get in contact with as much people as possible and stay open for new acitivites and things to explore!! It will only possitivly influence your exchange experience. CONCLUSIONS would you recommend this university/destination abroad to others? please explain Absolutely. Super friendly staff, interesting and well thought courses, a lot of other exchange students and so many activities to do within Uni and also around the city. Copenhagen is a fantastic city with endless options and if I would have know beforehand that it was possible to go abroad for two semesters, I would have loved to do so. do you have any additional advice or comments? page 2 of 8

It's important to check this account at all times counselling & support at Utrecht University fine academic preparation not needed language preparation Everyone in Denmark speaks English fluently, but real preparation wasn't needed (as long if your Enlgish is fine) finances Keep in mind that compared to the Netherlands, Copenhagen is way more expensive. I did not save a lot of money so i wasn't able to do all the things i wanted (Like a trip to Iceland or Norway) STUDY ABROAD PERIOD study programme (content and organisational issues) I studied Sociology and Criminology. academic quality of education activities Academic quality was good and the teachers were enthusiastic counselling & support at receiving university abroad Fine and helpful transfer of credits - welcome & orientation programme STUDENT LIFE page 3 of 8

4 Welcome programme from the faculty social sciences was informative. It also was a nice way to meet the other international studetns. accommodation Finding an accommodation is very hard in Copenhagen. The Copenhagen Housing foundation didn't really offer any good options as she system failed miserably, so it's important to do a lot of research yourself. I managed to find a nice appartement in Frederiksberg which I shared with an Danish guy from 25. Keep in mind that renting a room in Copenhage is expensive. leisure & culture Danish people are smart, kind and helpful. They are however, compared to Dutch people, really introverted. In my period I joined a fieldhockey team which was a nice way to meet other international students but also a lot of Danish people. suggestions/tips I found searching for a room the most stressful part, I recommand starting as early as possible. CONCLUSIONS would you recommend this university/destination abroad to others? please explain Yes, Copenhagen is a nice bustling city with a lot of cozy cafes and bars. Certainly when it gets colder and the christmasmarkets pop up I recommend Copenhagen and Denmark as a country. do you have any additional advice or comments? Be prepared for the high costs. page 4 of 8

5 UU Report form - Erasmus faculty/college Social science level bachelor s master s PhD name study programme Psychology destination city & country name university abroad start date end date Copenhagen, Denmark Copenhagen University 01 / 09 / 2014 (dd/mm/yyyy) 31 / 01 / 2015 (dd/mm/yyyy) exchange application process PREPARATION It all started with the online application in Osiris. After Utrecht University nominated me, I received an from Copenhagen University. They were happy to invite me for an official online application. In the a link was present. I had to fill in an application form and I had to upload a couple of documents, for example an officially signed grading list and a passport copy. In the application form I could also fill in if I would like to have a mentor during my stay and if I would like to register for the Housingfoundation to get a room easily. After completing my online application, I received quickly a confirmation. And after a month I received my official 'Letter of Admission', my University account and my studentnumber. counselling & support at Utrecht University After filling in the application in Osiris and sending all the mandatory documents, I quickly received an that I was selected to go on exchange to Copenhagen University (my first choice!). Soon here after a meeting was arranged, by the International Office of Utrecht University, for all students who were selected to go on exchange. During this meeting a lot of information was given and all the students were getting this information printed out as well. If I had any questions about my exchange, I ed the International Office and I always got an answer very fast. Also when I went to the Student Information Point to sign something that was needed for my exchange, they always made sure that I was not forgetting something. So, I think the counselling and support at Utrecht University is very good. academic preparation Because I was planning on going abroad in my fourth bachelor year, no academic preparation was needed. I think that the only condition was, that you at least had 120 ECTS (2 bachelor years completed). I had ECTS enough. language preparation No language preparation was needed. In Denmark everyone speaks english very well. finances Denmark is a very expensive country, more expensive than the Netherlands. Prices are high, so is the rent. It is important to realize this. Even though you are getting an Erasmus Grant, this is not enough to pay the rent and to pay for everything else (food, activities etc.) A financial plan is needed. study programme (content and organisational issues) STUDY ABROAD PERIOD page 5 of 8

6 Since I am studying psychology in Utrecht, before applying to Copenhagen University I was planning on following 2 psychology courses in Copenhagen. After I received my 'Letter of Admission' it became clear to me that this was not possible. Apparently there was a rule: If I wanted to do my exchange at Copenhagen University, at least I had to complete 20 ECTS (from the required 30 ECTS) in Sociology courses. This meant that I had to do at least 2 sociology courses, so I didn't have space anymore for 2 psychology courses that I was planning on following. This was very strange and I don't know whether it was a communication fault/mistake between the University of Copenhagen and Utrecht University or that it was just a weird rule from Copenhagen University. At least I think this should be clear before someone starts to apply for an exchange and not after this person has been admitted. So I ended up doing 2 sociology courses (instead of the 2 psychology courses I wanted to follow) and 1 Danish culture course (which was very fun). academic quality of education activities During my exchange I was following 3 courses: Conflict and peacemaking in divided societies, Mediasociology and Danish culture course. They all had one big 'free written exam' (a paper of at least 15 pages of a topic of your own choice) at the end of the course. You could also write this paper together with someone, but then you had to write more pages. Furthermore there were no exams with open questions or multiple choice questions as I was used to, since this is always the case in Utrecht (the Netherlands). So basically I didn't have to learn anything from books, because all the information that was needed for my paper I could look up. The grades I got for the 3 courses are all based on 1 paper only. This is very unusual for me and also I think this is kind of strange. For one course for example, you even didn t have to be present during the lectures. So basically you can pass the course by just writing a good paper afterwards (no attendance needed). I think this decreases the quality of the education. For another course called 'Danish culture course' we were, besides all the lectures, also making excursions. This was very fun, we saw a couple of highlights of Copenhagen that were very interesting and expensive for free. The excursions were arranged very well and were very informative too. They arranged for example history students to guide us through a historic castle etc. Also this course was only available for international students, so a lot of friendships were made too. I think it is very good of the University of Copenhagen to arrange such a course, only for international students. And I learned a lot of the Danish culture as well. counselling & support at receiving university abroad There was one man, he was international coordinator of the Sociology department. When I had any problems or questions, I could always him or step by at his office. So the support and counselling was very good. transfer of credits Copenhagen University ed me my transcript of records (and credits) approximately a month after I left. They also sent 3 hard copies to the University of Utrecht. welcome & orientation programme STUDENT LIFE I had one introduction afternoon of the department of sociology. Every international student that was going to follow sociology courses was invited. We got a lot of information and afterwards there was time for a drink and snack, so everyone could get to know each other. Although I must say that this introduction afternoon was planned badly. At the same time a big opening ceremony for all new danish students and all international students was happening. Unfortunately I had to miss this ceremony because of the sociology introduction. Also this afternoon was the only introduction we got. It would have been nicer to have a couple of introduction days and activities, so you can really get to know your fellow students. accommodation The campus of the university where I had to be for my courses was very beautiful. Also it was very close to the city centre of Copenhagen (it was kind of in the city centre). It was a very busy campus and when the sun was page 6 of 8

7 shining, everyone was sitting outside. So very central, easily to get to and cozy! leisure & culture Copenhagen is a very busy city with a very busy night life. There is enough to do for students! There are a lot of nice (cocktail)bars, clubs, studentbars, restaurants, coffee places, cinemas etc. It is a very beautiful city as well, with a lot of beautiful historical buildings, lakes and bridges. Also Copenhagen is located by the sea and has nice beaches. Furthermore, Copenhagen is a real bicycle city, there are bikers and cycle paths everywhere. It looks a lot like the Netherlands! Also the public transport is good and most of the time on time. There are busses, trains and metros. When I got to Copenhagen, I bought a cheap second hand bike. I biked almost everything, I almost never used the public transport. Even at night there are a lot of people on the street (by bike too). This gave me a feeling of safety when I was for example biking home from a club/going out. I never felt unsave. Also the public transport during the night is very good. Busses, metros and trains they all are still going at night (although not that often as usual). And ofcourse almost every Dane can speak english very well, when you ask them something, they are willing to help you. At last when I got in Copenhagen I also got a card with my CPRnumber (this is a personal registration number for the Danish government). With this number you can go to a doctor (for free) or dentist, in case something is wrong. This gave me a feeling of safety as well. Everything in Denmark seems to be organized well. suggestions/tips I have one big tip for every next student who is planning on going to Copenhagen University. You basically have 2 options to find a room. The first one is through the UCPH housingfoundation (this organisation is working together with Copenhagen University). The second one is find a place yourself. This is very hard though, because there are not a lot of rooms available. And Danish students are having priority. So I chose for the first option. Although the rent was high, I had a very nice stay and place! I lived in a shared apartment. I had my own room, but I had to share my kitchen and bathroom with 3 other international students (which was very nice). But in the end of my stay, before you leave you have to clean your room and all the common areas as well (kitchen, bathroom) to get back your deposit. However I was the only one leaving the apartment, since my roommates were staying for one whole year. I cleaned all the common areas and left. 19 days after my departure, someone from the housingfoundation stepped by to inspect the place. This person concluded that the place was a mess (I can imagine when 3 people are still living in the apartment continuing using the toilet etc.) and invited a professional cleaning company to clean the whole place. They held only me responsible for the mess, so I got the bill for the cleaning costs which was an amount of 300 euro! When I saw this I was furious of course, since it is ridiculous of them to come check 19 days after my departure (19 days after I cleaned the place). Especially since I knew that one of my roommates was going to give a party for her birthday, 12 days after I left ( So I can imagine the mess, but don't hold me responsible for it). So in the end the tip I want to give next students: please make pictures before you leave your place. Make sure you have evidence that you really cleaned the place/did not break things. For example one Dutch girl I met in Copenhagen, the housingfoundation charged her for a 'missing' light that had never been there during her stay anyways. So please be careful, they are very pathetic. Unfortunately they have a lot of power, since they are (kind of) the only option for an international student to get a room. CONCLUSIONS would you recommend this university/destination abroad to others? please explain Yes I would for sure. Copenhagen is a very nice city, you don't have to get bored. There are plenty things to do for students, both during the day and night. Also it is a city with a lot of students (Both Danes students and international students). Everything is well organized, it is save and everyone speaks english very well so you can always ask people things. Also at the University, everyone is very helpful especially for international students. Professors speak english very well, lectures are easy to follow. The schedules are organized well and enough information is given. Overall I had a very nice experience, I really enjoyed my time in Copenhagen and I made a lot of international friends! I think Copenhagen is a good choice for students who want to study abroad, but page 7 of 8

8 don't want to have a complete culture shock, want to feel save and don't want to be too far from home. Copenhagen (Denmark) has a lot in common with the Netherlands I would say. Both countries are well organized, have beautiful historical cities, and of course it is common (good facilities) to bike in both countries, which makes going from place to place a lot easier. do you have any additional advice or comments? No further comments. page 8 of 8
