1 Annual Post Secondary School Scholarship for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Banquet Annually Last day in December Due first week in January To Whom It May Concern: The attached packet should be given to interested students who are considering applying for a scholarship through the Thurston Group of Washington State s () Scholarship Program. Your help in disbursing this information is greatly appreciated. The following explains our objective and criteria. Mission Statement: The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship fund believes that in order to help our youth gain access to the best possible education we must provide monetary assistance and promote a diverse and competitive educational environment. Thurston Group of Washington State- CRITERIA FOR THE AWARD -secondary institution. AWARD Scholarship winners will be announced in the amount of, at least $1, each at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Banquet in January Scholarships will be awarded based on the availability of funds to support tuition or other college expenses i.e. books. 1) Applicant must receive high school diploma or GED in the year of the award. 2) Applicant is enrolled or accepted to an accredited post-secondary institution. 3) Note: Award is mailed to School upon verification of enrollment in Post-Secondary institution. 2 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM CRITERIA GENERAL INFORMATION, INSTRUCTIONS AND REMINDER ITEMS Background Information: (Thurston Group of Washington-Reach Out Program) is a 501(c) 3 Non Profit program created to advance the lives of young people to seek educational opportunities beyond high school. Effort to promote the well-being, education, and professional development of Students.. Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be students who have graduated, or will graduate in the current school year. Additionally, applicants must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least two point five (2.5). Application Procedure: Completed applications must be submitted by and mailed to the address indicated on page one of this application and post marked no later than Last Day in December. Each applicant must submit a typed 250-word essay describing their future aspirations. An official transcript from their high school, accredited post-secondary institution or GED certificate. Two (2) letters of recommendations from teachers, counselors/advisors, and or community persons of your choosing. Selection Procedure: Scholarship applications received by Thurston Group of Washington State Reach Out Scholarship Committee are screened, verified as deemed appropriate, and competitively evaluated. A scholarship selection committee will evaluate individual applications based on academic achievement, quality of community and extracurricular activities, recommendations and the student s essay. Notification Procedure: Selected individuals will be announced at the Banquet and notified by mail within 30 days after deadline. Address of notification where to send the scholarship. Award Payment: Scholarship payment will be mailed to the, College/University/Instution upon receipt of verification of enrollment in that institution); the Thurston Group of Washington State- must be notified of the College/ University Office and name of the contact person and School Address stating, where to send the Scholarship. Verification includes: name, mailing address of Financial Office and Student ID number at the College or University. If no verification of enrollment is provided within one year of scholarship award date; selected individual loses all rights and privileges to the scholarship.

3 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Criteria & Instructions Your completed application packet must include: A completed scholarship application form. NOTE: Print clearly, check that each section is completed, and remember to sign. An official transcript from your high school accredited post-secondary institution or GED certificate. A typed essay describing your future aspirations, not to exceed 250 words. NOTE: Tell us about your goals and plans for the future. Think about experiences that have shaped your life. Two (2) letters of recommendations from teachers, counselors/advisors, and/or community persons of your choosing. If possible, please attach letters, which include the addresses and phone numbers of the writers, to your application. NOTE: Request your recommendations early! (Recommendations from authors must be included in your package. Thoroughly answer all of the questions on the following pages, typing or printing clearly.
