1 After School Academic Enrichment Programs Dear Parents and Guardians: Ellington Public Schools offers a variety of academic enrichment programs after school with a focus on STEM and Theater/Literacy. Schedules vary by program, so please review the specific dates, times and targeted grades carefully. Please be aware that space is limited for each program and subject to sufficient enrollment. As such, students must be enrolled at the school in which the program is being offered. Parents must arrange for students to be picked up from the school promptly at the end of the session. Parents should use the main office entrance when picking up their child. Registration for these programs will begin on August 31st. Parents will be able to register for these programs through the Ellington Public Schools website. Please see the back of this handout for additional registration information. Financial assistance is available to qualifying families. If you have any questions about these programs or would like to apply for financial assistance, please contact Jennifer O Brien in the Educational Services Department at , ext. 119.
2 LEGO Engineering & Robotics Programs Page 2 Simple & Motorized Mechanisms (Grades 5-6) This program gives students a fundamental understanding of simple machines through the hands-on building and investigating of motorized machines. Students repeating the course will be able to work with our more advanced kits - Pneumatics! This program is offered in the Fall at each elementary school. Sign up for the program located at your child s school. Space is limited to 24 students at each location. Dates: Mondays, Oct. 3rd - Nov. 14th (no class Oct. 10th) Time: 3:20 pm - 4:50 pm Fee: $45.00 per student. We Do Robotics (Grades 3-4) Students will be able to build Lego models featuring working motors and sensors, and will be able to program their models. Activities include building programmable models of animals, soccer players, airplanes and much more. Students with previous experience in our We Do program will be offered the STEM extension activities. Dates: Mondays, Jan. 9th - March 13th (no classes Jan. 16th & Feb. 20th) Time: 3:20 pm - 4:50 pm Fee: $60.00 per student. Offered in the Winter at each elementary school. Sign up for the program located at your child s school. Space is limited to 24 students at each location. Simple Machines (Grades 1-2) Students enrolled in the Simple Machines program will discover how simple machines work by learning key physical science concepts such as gears, pulleys, levers, wheels and axels. Offered in the Spring at each elementary school. Space is limited to 18 students. Dates: Mondays, April 3rd - May 15th (no class April 10th) Fee: $30.00 per student. NOTE: On dates when there is no school for students and/or an early dismissal due to snow or conferences, after school programs and clubs will not meet.
3 STEM Engineering & Robotics Programs Page 3 EV3 Mindstorms (Grades 7-8) The Mindstorms EV3 Robotics program challenges students to design, build, and program robots that move using motors with rotation sensors. The structure of activities in each program mimics the engineering design process used by scientists and engineers. Location: Ellington Middle School, Media Center Dates: Tuesdays, Jan. 10th - Feb. 14th Time: 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm Fee: $45.00 Limited to 20 students. EHS Robotics Club (Grades 9-12) NEW!! EHS will be offering a Robotics Club for students interested in robotics and engineering. Participants in the club will be building robots and competing at annual state VEX competitions. No experience necessary! Club members do not need to be enrolled in the robotics course to participate. Students in grades 9-12 who are interested should speak to Mr. Waine at the high school for more information. Young Inventors Club (Grades 3-8) Through participation in the club, students will take part in activities designed to help them learn how to solve a problem by creating their own invention. At home and independently students will design and create an invention to improve upon and/or solve a real-world problem! All young inventors will share their inventions at the Ellington Invention Convention on Thursday, March 16th. Selected student finalists will represent Ellington Public Schools at the Regional Invention Convention on Saturday, April 15th. This program meets on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays from October to March, for two Saturday sessions, and for the Ellington Invention Convention on March 16th. We offer the program at each elementary school and at the middle school for students in grades 3-8. Please be sure to register your child for the club located at his or her school and for the appropriate grades: YIC, Windermere, Grades 3-4 YIC, Windermere, Grades 5-6 YIC, Center School, Grades 3-5 YIC, Crystal Lake School, Grades 3-5 YIC, Middle School, Grades 7-8 Dates: 1st and 3rd Thursdays from Oct. 6th - March 16th (no session Dec. 1st) Times: 3:15 pm - 4:30 pm (elementary schools) 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm (middle school) Fee: $75.00 per student Space is limited to 20 students in each club. Thursday after school dates are 10/6, 10/20, 11/3, 11/17, 12/15, 1/5, 1/19, 2/2, 2/16, 3/2 and 3/9. Saturday sessions are Saturday, October 22nd and March 4th, from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm in the Windermere cafeteria. The Ellington Convention will be held at Ellington High School from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm on March 16th.
4 Hartford Stage Theater Partnership Programs Page 4 Creative Drama: Under the Seas Using well-known children s literature, such as Rainbow Fish, students will recreate stories that take place under the seas while exploring life in the deep blue. Students will learn the foundations of acting: building an ensemble, developing a character, practicing proper vocal and movement techniques, as they recreate characters and stories on the stage. The class will conclude with a small performance for parents and friends. Please register for the program located at your child s school only. Space is limited to 20 students at each location. Reader s Theater A Hartford Stage teaching artist will work with students to create, rehearse, and perform several reader s theater scripts based on stories. In reader s theater students perform a play with script in hand, so the emphasis is on reading and fluency including speaking clearly and with expression. The program will end with a small performance for parents. Please register for the program located at your child s school only. Space is limited to 20 students at each location. Students will share a small performance for parents and friends on March 9. 5 EPS Registration Information Page 5 Registration Information: Registration for EPS After School Academic Enrichment Programs begins on Wednesday, August 31st. Registration will be available through the Ellington Public Schools website under Quick Links: After you register online, you will receive an automated confirming your registration. If your child is waitlisted for the program, you will be notified if space becomes available. Registration will be on an ongoing basis throughout the year for programs but will close 1 week prior to the start of each program. We will make every effort to run programs but reserve the right to cancel any program that has insufficient enrollment numbers. Parents will be notified if a program will be cancelled due to low enrollment numbers. Transportation is not provided. Parents must arrange for students to be picked up from the school promptly at the end of the session. Parents should use the main office entrance when picking up their child. Payment is due at the time you register. Financial assistance is available to qualifying families. If you need to apply for financial assistance, please contact the Educational Services Department prior to registering for the program.
