1 Learn to Swim Programme Syllabuses: Please note that pupils will be assessed across the course of the term to ensure they can, consistently, fulfill the criteria and MUST pass every element of the syllabus to move to the next Stage in the following term Pre- school (aged from 3½) shallow water & teacher in the water: Make a supervised jump to an adult with or without support Kick 5 metres on the front holding a float Blow bubbles with the mouth underwater Float on the front or back without adult support Travel 5 metres on the front to the side of the pool Show a torpedo shape on the front or back when pushed to a partner Jump unaided, but supervised, into the water Submerge completely Rotate through 360 degrees either horizontally or vertically with aids Show a mushroom float or a star float Stage 1 (aged from 4) shallow water & teacher in the water: Enter the water safely & Exit the water safely. There may be use of an assistant Move forwards for a distance of 5 metres Move backwards for a distance of 5 metres Move sideways for distance of 5 metres (Where MOVE is defined as any means of moving around the pool with the feet on or off the bottom e.g. stepping, hopping, skipping, jumping) Fully submerge with confidence & blow bubbles under water Float horizontally front and back without aids Regain an upright position from on the back, (ears in the water) without support Regain an upright position from on the front (face in the water) without support Push & glide in a horizontal position to or from a wall on both front & back Demonstrate an understanding of pool rules Participants assessed through Questions & Answers and/or by practically applying the pool rules Understand & demonstrate basic movement patterns for Breast leg kick & dolphin undulation Travel on the back using arms & legs for 5 metres without aids Travel on the front using arms & legs for 5 metres without aids

2 Stage 2 (aged from 5) shallow water: Full submersion 6 times exhaling under water & immediate in breath rhythmically (defined as inhalation & exhalation is of equal length, in a controlled manner) Regain upright position from the back without support Regain an upright position from the front without support (Where support is defined as wall or another person) Push from wall & glide on the back in streamlined position Push from wall & glide on the front in streamlined position Perform a rotation from the front to the back and regain an upright position Perform a rotation from the back to the front and regain an upright position Swim 5m recognisable f/c arms over water recovery Swim 5m recognisable bk arms over water recovery Kick 5m on front recognisable breast kick & dolphin undulation Stage 3 shallow water: Jump in from poolside safely and submerge (min depth. 0.9m) Sink below the water, push away from wall on side and maintain a streamlined position Push & glide on the front with arms extended and log roll onto the back whilst retaining the arms in extended position Push & glide on the back with arms extended and log roll onto the front whilst retaining the arms in extended position Travel on the front, tuck to rotate around the horizontal axis to return on the back Fully submerge to pick up an object BOTH hands, NO GOGGLES Answer correctly 3 questions on the Water Safety Code (Where 3 Responses to the Water Safety Code are to include: 'Don't go alone', 'Go with a friend', and 'Tell someone where you are going.' Further details on the Water Safety Code can be found on Swim at least 1 width (17m) on the back with recognisable over arm recovery Swim at least 1 width (17m) on the front with recognisable over arm recovery and breathing to the side Swim at least 1 width (17m) with recognisable breaststroke (including both feet turned out during the propulsive phase of the kick) Swim at least 10 metres with recognisable dolphin undulation

3 Stage 4 (first stage in deeper water): Demonstrate an understanding of buoyancy* & tread water for 30 seconds Perform a tuck / mushroom float, chin tucked in tight for 15 seconds Perform a sequence of changing shapes (minimum of 3) whilst floating at the surface Push & glide from the wall to the pool floor Kick 1 length (17.5m) Backcrawl without floats Kick 1 length (17.5m) Frontcrawl without floats Kick 1 length (17.5m) Butterfly on the front or on the back without floats Kick 1 length (17.5m) Breaststroke on the front without floats Perform on the back a head first sculling action for 5 metres in a horizontal position Travel on back and roll in one continuous movement onto front Travel on front and roll in one continuous movement onto back Swim 2 lengths (35m), on all 4 strokes (2 lengths on all 4 strokes, first length on Free, Back & Breast with Efficient stroke - first length on Fly with Basic stroke and the 2nd length with a stroke resembling the specific stroke) Stage 5: Perform a horizontal stationary scull on the back (Stationary Sculling refers to a sculling action performed close to the hips with palms flat, facing pool bottom) Perform a feet first sculling action for 5 metres whilst horizontal on the back (Feet first sculling' refers to a sculling action performed close to the hips with finger tips down, palms towards head). Perform a sculling sequence with a partner for seconds to include a rotation Tread water for 60 seconds (Swimmer can use different methods to achieve the skill including egg beater kick, which must be performed out of their standing depth) Perform 3 different shaped jumps into deep water Swim at least 2 lengths (35m) Backcrawl effective stroke Swim at least 2 lengths (35m) Frontcrawl face in the water effective stroke Swim at least 2 lengths (35m) Breaststroke effective stroke Swim at least 2 lengths (35m) Butterfly basic stroke Perform a handstand and hold for a minimum of 3 seconds Perform a forward somersault, tucked, in the water Demonstrate an action for getting help (Action for Getting Help refers to Participant in the water treading water and waving one arm above head whilst shouting for help. Participant must appear at ease in performing this activity.)

4 Stage 6: Demonstrate an understanding of preparation for exercise (preparation for exercise' - this may be a Q & A and answers given by the class must reflect the following answers: you must start by moving slowly, you must get warm, you can stretch, you must not eat within 1 hour or more of coming swimming, kit required etc.) Sink, push off on side from the wall, glide, kick and rotate into Backcrawl Sink, push off on side from the wall, glide, kick and rotate into Frontcrawl Swim 25 metres with clothes on choice of stroke is optional. (Minimum requirement t- shirt & shorts) Swim efficient Frontcrawl to include at least six rhythmical breaths Swim efficient Breaststroke to include at least six rhythmical breaths Swim efficient Butterfly to include at least three rhythmical breaths (Rhythmical breaths' refer to Frontcrawl as bilateral, Breaststroke as exhaling during the arm recovery / inhaling at any stage of the arm pull, and during butterfly, swimmers are encouraged to breathe every two strokes) Swim 25 metres efficiently on all 4 strokes Perform a 'shout & signal' rescue ('Shout & Signal rescue' - Requires the Swimmer (on poolside) to raise the alarm (shouting for adult help), and then the Swimmer (maintaining position on poolside must 'shout and instruct' the casualty (who is in the water) and 'give guidance' to help the casualty get to the side of the pool safely. This must be done without making any contact with the casualty to avoid danger.) Perform a surface dive both head first and feet first Exit the water without using steps over the plinth Stage 7: Swim 50 metres Backcrawl with efficient stroke Swim 50 metres Frontcrawl with efficient stroke Swim 50 metres Breaststroke with efficient stroke Swim 50 metres Butterfly with effective stroke Perform a movement sequence of 1 minute duration, in a group of 3 or more Perform a sitting dive Perform a shallow dive from a standing position holding streamline to surface 100 metres, using a minimum of 3 different strokes (complete a full length before changing strokes.) Tread water using egg beater action for 60 seconds (alternate breastroke leg kick whilst maintaining high knee position.) Perform 'legal' turns for all 4 strokes

5 CONGRATULATIONS At this point the swimmer will have completed our Learn to Swim programme and be safe in the water and ready to move to an aquatic based club. They will receive a letter of congratulations and an invite to come and discuss, with the Programme Co- ordinator about how to continue their aquatic career with an aquatic club of some form
