1 Overview to Linking s and TCI Chapters (Gr. 7) How was this document created? During the school year, the MMSD Middle School Social Studies Leadership Team drafted a document linking the MMSD Social Studies Standards and TCI chapters. The intention was to take a close look at the TCI Social Studies Alive! materials in order to document which specific points in the text correlated to specific MMSD Social Studies standards. The document was revisited in 2013 by the MMSD Middle School Social Studies Leadership Team, and revised accordingly. How can this document be used? Suggested uses include: Reflect on current curricular decisions using this document as a guide in order to maximize coverage of grade-level standards Use to determine potential year-long or unit themes Use to determine essential chapters in planning a year of study Recognize and highlight additional themes or skills to emphasize, while keeping focus on the essential question of the TCI chapter. In the Introduction to the Common Core State Standards for Literacy, this is referred to as: Often, several standards can be addressed by a single rich task (p. 5). o Gr. 6 example: emphasize the theme of family (MMSD Behavioral Science Standard #2) in addition to the essential question of Ch. 9 Daily Life in Ancient Egypt: How did social class affect daily life in ancient Egypt? o Gr. 7 example: teach the skill of profile map-reading (MMSD Geography Standard #2) in student Interactive Student Notebook (ISN) work around use and protection of ecosystems for Ch. 4 The Great Lakes: The U.S. and Canada s Freshwater Treasures. o Gr. 8 example: emphasize the theme of money and banking (MMSD Economics Standard #7) in considering the essential question of Ch. 13 A Growing Sense of Nationhood: What did it mean to be an American in the early 1800s? Use to make thematic connections between different units and topics of study, which might be incorporated into research projects or opportunities for student collaboration o Example: compare and contrast government from two different areas of study (ex. India & China) Determine opportunities for integration of CCSS Literacy standards and strategies Use as a starting point for teachers new to MMSD, a particular grade level, or TCI Where can I find additional resources for teaching the s? 2 Linking s and TCI Chapters Grade 7 Social Studies: Geography/Global Connections Geography Alive!, TCI Edition A GEOGRAPHY: People, places and environments 1. Locate the major political and physical features of the world on a map. 2. Apply the concepts of physical geography including latitude and longitude, scale, direction, symbols, projections, contours, etc. 3. Analyze various geographic areas utilizing the five themes of geography: location, place, interaction, movement, and regions. 4. Use maps, globes, graphs, and supporting tools and technology to acquire and process information from a spatial perspective. 5. Explain the relationship of population distribution to Earth s physical characteristics. 6. Explain why people must adapt to their environment in order to survive. Please see the list of Maps following the Table of Contents and the Atlas at the back of the book. TCI has a Map Skills Toolkit, available online and in the Teacher Kit. Interpret and evaluate sources of information presented in graphs, charts, maps, timelines, etc. 5. Analyze a historical event using primary and secondary sources.
