By their nature, emergencies happen quickly and can often have far reaching consequences. To save you from potentially making a mistake, Health and Safety have put together this information guidance, giving a number of easy to follow steps that will guide you through the following situations that might arise. Fire emergency Person trapped in a lift Gas leak Telephone system failure Water leak or flood Discarded hypodermic needles Spilt body fluids Medical emergency Security emergency Although we sincerely hope that you are never called upon to use these, do please keep this guide in a safe place just in case.
Fire Emergency Evacuation Procedure If you discover a fire Leave by the nearest exit, following green fire exit signs Do not stop to collect personal belongings Sound the fire alarm on route (by breaking glass in call point) Close all doors on the way Call Fire Brigade (Tel 999) Call Security Control Room (internal extension 3200 or externally ) Assemble in an adjacent car park Do not re-enter the building until instructed to do so If you hear the fire alarm Leave by the nearest exit, following green fire exit signs Do not stop to collect personal belongings Close all doors on the way Assemble in an adjacent car park Do not re-enter the building until instructed to do so Do not attempt to fight a fire unless your escape is blocked Never use a lift in a fire evacuation If you have a mobility problem you should attempt to leave the building. However, provided you can reach one of the staircase lobbies, you will be safe for at least 30 minutes, then tell someone that you are remaining behind and that the Fire Brigade must be told or use the Disabled Refuge Intercom system to inform the person in charge of your location. You may ask a friend to stay with you. Once informed, the Fire Brigade can then effect a rescue.
If you are trapped Person Trapped in a Lift If you are ever trapped in a lift you should summon help by using the intercom. Caretaking/Security staff will then attend and release you. If another person is trapped If you become aware that a person is trapped in a lift, you should inform the Security Control Room (internal extension 3200 or externally ). A member of staff will then attend and release the trapped person(s). Gas Leak If you smell gas, the following actions are to be taken: Do not operate electrical switches. Open doors and windows to get rid of gas and keep them open until the leak has been stopped. Inform Security Control Room (internal extension 3200 or externally ). Telephone System Failure If there is an emergency during a failure of the University s telephone system you can still contact the Security Control Room from a mobile phone on
Electrical Power Failure In the event of an interruption to the electrical power supply, the fire alarm will continue to be operational and emergency lighting will activate, providing sufficient light to enable you to move safely around the building. Inform the Security Control Room (internal extension 2086 or externally ). The Estates Division of Campus Facilities will then take steps to have the power restored, Caretaking/Security Staff will release any person(s) trapped in lifts and Health and Safety will liaise with local management regarding the safety of staff and students. This procedure should not be used for reporting faulty lights or sockets, these should be reported to the Estates Division of Campus Facilities in the normal way, by telephoning ext Water Leak or Flood If you discover standing water on the floor, water pouring down a wall, or through a ceiling, you should do the following: Taking care not to expose yourself to any danger, such as wet electrical equipment, turn off any tap that may have been left on. Inform the Security Control Room (internal extension 2086 or externally ), giving details of the location and amount of water involved and if the source has been isolated.
Discarded Hypodermic Needles and Syringes If you discover a discarded hypodermic needle or syringe, it is important that you do not handle it. You should: Warn any person in the vicinity. Inform Security Control Room (internal extension 2086 or externally ), giving details of the location. A member of staff will then attend and dispose of the offending item in an appropriate manner. Spilt Body Fluids If you discover any spilt body fluid, e.g. blood, vomit, etc. it is important that you do not come into contact with it. You should: Warn any person in the vicinity. Inform Security Control Room (internal extension 2086 or externally ), giving the location and nature of the fluid. A member of staff will then attend and dispose of the spilt body fluid in an appropriate manner.
Medical Emergency Summoning a First Aider Trained First Aiders are located in the building. If you are unable to find a First Aider, contact the Reception Desk extension 8777 and a First Aider will be contacted to assist. Calling an Ambulance If a person becomes ill or is injured and requires an ambulance, the following procedure should be followed: 1. Dial 999 and ask for the Ambulance Service. 2. State that an ambulance is required at Teesside University Darlington Campus, together with the floor and room number. If the person requiring treatment is outdoors, state the location on campus. 3. State the number of persons involved, and if possible, details of their condition. Confirm that the Ambulance Service has all the information it requires before you terminate the call. 4. Telephone Darlington College Reception on to inform them that you have called an ambulance, giving details of why and where it is required. 5. Go to the scene of the incident and confirm that an ambulance has been summoned. 6. Ensure that there is someone at the entrance of the building to guide the Ambulance staff.
Security Emergency If you have any security concerns contact the Caretaking/Security Staff. If you feel there is the potential for physical harm, you may also contact the Reception Desk on ext If you wish to discuss security issues with the Building Services Manager you may contact them on ext Contacting Health and Safety Staff Finally, the Health and Safety Centre attempts to be available to you at all times. Please feel free to ring on ext. 2213, or at: for a response during working hours. We also carry radios and mobile phones and we can therefore be contacted through the Security Control Room or via Human Resources. For out of hours emergencies the Security Control Room will contact us at home if your problem requires immediate action. This publication is also available in alternative formats on request.
