1 Community Based Alcohol Services Consultation Response Form We are seeking views on possible future community based alcohol services in Wolverhampton. Specifically: - Rapid access to services clinic(s) Provision of motivational therapies A process for systematic follow up (a call and recall system for people who have been identified as having alcohol related problems) Provision of community detoxification Alcohol LES Please read the accompanying document which provides greater detail on needs and proposals. GPs/practice nurses and other clinicians, alcohol service providers, alcohol service users and stakeholders are invited to share views on the nature and shape of future community based alcohol services. We are requesting that you provide your comments/views to questions posed in comment boxes 1-5. Please feel free to comment on all interventions you have views on. 1. Rapid Access Clinic(s) / Motivational Therapies 2. Systematic Follow-up 3. Community Detoxification 4. Alcohol LES 5. Needs Time table: Thursday 24 June 2010 Friday 23 July 2010 Friday 17 September 2010 Launch of consultation Consultation closes Findings of consultation published Please return your completed form, by Friday 23 July 2010, to: Lynne Cox Public Health Wolverhampton City PCT Chapel Ash Wolverhampton, WV3 0XE Lynne.Cox@wolvespct.nhs.uk 1
2 Proposed Community Based Alcohol Services Response Form Rapid Access Clinic It is proposed that rapid access clinic (s) be established to provide immediate or quick access to clinicians, diagnosis and treatments for people with more serious alcohol misuse problems. We suggest that motivational therapies should also be provided in clinics as it has been identified that the provision of motivational therapies increases the effectiveness of any treatment regime. Motivational Therapies It is proposed that motivational therapies are made available in the community for those with moderate alcohol misuse problems, including those with problems of alcohol aggravated violence and domestic violence. Evidenced based motivational therapy addresses the underlying causes of alcohol misuse and supports problematic drinkers to change their drinking behaviours. 1. Rapid access clinic (s) including motivational therapies - Views/Comments Please b) What treatment services and interventions should be provided? c) How many and where should it (they) be located? Times available? Staffed? d) What relationship should clinic(s) have with other alcohol services? Systematic follow-up It is proposed that a central administrative team/hub is established to co-ordinate the referral process and systematic follow-up services for people identified with serious alcohol problems. 2
3 2. Systematic Follow-up Views/Comments Please b) If Yes/No Why? Community Detoxification It is suggested that alcohol detoxification is provided in a community setting. This offers the opportunity to mimimise the risks of detoxification for those were home detoxification is not a viable option, because of inadequate social support. A detailed model for such a service in Wolverhampton has not been determined, however this could be provided in a central or day unit for example. 3. Provision of Community Based Detoxification Views/Comments Please b.) How should this unit be provided and staffed? (Attached to a current community service out-patient clinic or as a stand alone service.) Suggested models are welcome. c) What would its relationship be with other alcohol services? Alcohol LES We support that an Alcohol LES (Locally Enhanced Service) could be established within Wolverhampton targeting those at highest risk of developing alcohol misuse problems. 3
4 4. Alcohol LES Views/Comments Please b) Which higher risk groups should be included in the LES c) What support/incentives would be required to get GPs to sign up to this LES? Needs We are aware that there will be other needs and issues that need to be considered with regard to developing future community based alcohol services. Please let us know what other needs and provision should be considered? 5. Other Needs /Service Provision. Views/Comments Please? a) Do you know/understand what alcohol services are currently available/exist? b) Do you consider that current alcohol services meet needs? c) Are there any significant barriers/issues that you or your organisation has experienced regarding alcohol treatment and support needs in relation to current provision? d) What is missing - Needs? e) What is missing Service Provision? Further consultation on interventions ideas identified maybe undertaken. 4
