2 What is an invasive species? A species that is not native and whose introduction causes, or is likely to cause, economic or environmental harm or harm to human health.

13 Goal I: Prevent new introductions of AIS into Michigan waters. Goal II: Limit the dispersal of established populations of AIS throughout Michigan waters. Goal III*: Develop a statewide interagency EDRR Program to address new invasions of AIS. Goal IV: Manage and control AIS to minimize the harmful environmental, economic, and public health effects resulting from established populations.

Asia Brought to the southern U.S. in the 1970s as a biocontrol agent for excessive algae growth in aquaculture ponds. Fast growing, highly prolific Compete for food Risk to recreational water users Illegal to transport or possess Electric barrier in the CAWS edna sampling

19 Northern Snakehead WHERE is it from? WHEN did it get here? WHY is it a concern? WHAT is being done? China, Russia, and Korea Found in the late 1990s / early 2000s in eastern U.S. states. It is established in AR, MD, VA, NY, and PA, likely from releases from food market & pet trades. Voracious eats algae, fish, frogs, insects, and small reptiles, birds, and mammals! Survives well in cold habitats Spawn up to 5x per year Can live outside of water and travel across land Illegal to transport or possess

Gulf Coast It is native to southern U.S. states and is a popular choice for crawfish boils and as bait. Compete for food with native species Ecosystem engineer burrows disrupt sediment Illegal to possess alive Education and Outreach to anglers and bait suppliers

22 Red Swamp Crayfish: Summer 2015 Detection Four dead crayfish were found in July by Lake Macatawa, Ottawa County, MI DNR and MSU search teams surveyed the area and did not find any alive

Europe, Asia, and Africa The huge mats impede boat traffic Take over habitat that fish and ducks use When the mats die off in the fall, it decreases oxygen levels WHAT is being done? Hand removal in spring and summer Herbicide (chemical) control

28 Oak Wilt WHERE is it from? WHEN did it get here? WHY is it a concern? WHAT is being done? Unknown First found in Wisconsin in Attacks all species of oak trees, especially red oaks Blocks water movement, killing the tree The fungus smells sweet, which attracts beetles (which spread it) Mostly spread via roots bigger trees are more likely to spread the fungus No treatment is available A fungistat can be used for prevention every two years
