Children s Health Insurance Coverage: Progress, Obstacles, and Opportunities Speakers: Chair: Jennifer DeVoe Genevieve Kenney; Miguel Marino; Cathy Schoen

Health Insurance and Access to Care The uninsured have more unmet need; receive fewer preventive services

ACCESS TO CARE IS NECESSARY People need health care If we re not healthy especially with the kids, they re not going to grow up and take over all the things we ve done and be smart, health care is important, we ve got to be seen. -Oregon Parent

INTRODUCTION Health insurance allows access to health care services In the face of budgetary shortfalls, the US decided to focus on providing health insurance to low- income children but not adults Our panel today will review the expansion of Our panel today will review the expansion of children s public health insurance, discuss issues around these policies, and describe what is to come

HEALTH INSURANCE IS VITAL I think it s just nice to know if you do need it (health insurance), that it s there, like when he broke his arm, what are you going to do? You ve got to take your kid to the doctor, that s not a matter of let s wait it out for a couple days like with a cold it s just one less thing to have to worry about because you know in the back of your mind if something like that did happen you ve got that little help right there. -Oregon Parent

GENEVIEVE M. KENNEY, PH.D. 7 INTERRELATEDNESS OF FAMILIIES We re a family, so we re a network. What happens to me affects them and what happens to them affects me. It s like, it goes out. Like that ripple in a pond thing. You know, if I m not doing well and I m sick, then I miss work. The job that I have now, I have no vacation time, no sick time, nothing, so if I m out were not going to have the money.

MIGUEL MARINO, PH.D. Yerby Postdoctoral Fellow, Harvard School of Public Health Faculty member of the Oregon Health & Science University, Department of Family Medicine, and the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Division of Biostatistics Interested in high-dimensional correlated data; longitudinal, l multilevel l and clustered data; and analysis of large medical data including electronic health records Will present on what the Oregon Experiment taught us about the importance of parental health insurance

HEALTH REFORM IS IMPORTANT maybe they ve never been poor, or had to live in their car, or had to stand in line for food, maybe they ve never been there...so maybe they need to walk in those people s shoes and hear from those people because it s real There are people that really just want to provide the best home they can for their kids and the best environment, and part of that is being able to treat their kids when they re sick and not worry about where the money is going to come from... -Oregon Parent
